millermagic
I just got my computer that I'll be using as my file server. Now what do I do about hard drives. I'm looking for something >100gb but less than $100USD. Also, should I buy two of them for backup purposes? I kinda go overboard with backups. I have a copy of all of my files on both computers in the house and an external hard drive.
Edwards
You may be overthinking this a bit. Hard drives are simple. Just buy one of the appropriate size (your choice) of the appropriate type (PATA or SATA, depending on your motherboard) from your favourite manufacturer (mine is western digital) from your favourite local PC shop, or if that fails, website. Finding a >100GB drive for <$100 should be easy, as my PC shop shows $99CDN for a 200GB WD PATA drive. Do what you want for backup. Personally, one of my two main machines (which have different purposes) is more or less my file server, with a 160GB drive. Everything on that drive is rsync'd nightly to an old Pentium MMX box that has a 200GB drive and an ATA controller in it. IMO this is as good as you can get without going to offsite backups. sysnode.org
ms.cooldude
Shops hardly sell 100GB HDD's these days. What I recomend is a 180GB and before you ask, you can get it under $100 easily!

I don't think he was talking about a 100GB. I think he was talking about something over 100GB, for less than $100. And surely shops don't sell 180 GIGS much, surely its 160 or 200. Sixdust
Buy, lets say a 200gb one, then depending at the rate that you fill it up, either get another smaller one, one the same size, or if that was way too little space, invest in an even bigger harddrive. If you feel that 200g is more than sufficient, than just stick with one.
fuckindumass
If you use 2 and set them up properly you'll only have the space of one, but if you have a hard drive failure you'll lose nothing, so I guess it depends on how much you are willing to spend to feel secure. I think usually 3 are used for that purpose, but I have little knowledge on setting that up. Sam's Club, BestBuy, Circuit City, one or all of them will frequently have a sale or rebate that will get you a hdd @ 50 cents a gig or less I got both my Western Digital 80g drives for $40 each at Best Buy, I bought a 250g for $120 at Sam's Club for my brother. ms.cooldude
Two is the best option. Let alone that I have it, it can yes, be used for backup purposes by installing "Power Quest Drive Image 7". This program saves all the files/folders that you set to save In to a new 2GB file which should then be stored onto the 2nd HDD. If your 1st HDD corrupts, then you can use this file to recover the files/folders which you saved into it before.
millermagic
I was just thinking, windows doesn't support drives larger than 137gb without a patch, does it? Also, I'd have to patch the hard drive and/or my bios for it too.

ManFromMars
I bought myself a 160GB hdd for £60 which is 112.915 USD but that was like 2 years ago so they must be alot cheaper now .

millermagic
Just ordered myself a 160gbSATA drive from newegg along with a SATA controller card. I plan on buying another SATA drive when Iget the money. Forgot one thing though, power adapter from IDE to SATA. I think I'll just get a new power supply, because the one in the dell is small.
