I Woke up this morning to find a copy of episode 1 waiting 4 me on the table tounge.gif (pre-ordered it from amazon.co.uk for £15 the cheapest i could find), started playing at about 11, finnished it around 3pm.

Great game but kinda short, i'm not bothered about the length though as there are at least 2 more episodes confirmed to be released.

The first 2 chapters wern't as fun as the others cos my pc was lagging a bit, but once i got out of the citidel it was fine, i remember it was like that at the end of HL2 when u first enter the citidel.

I was expecting to see alot more of those new creatures, mabye even destroy a few, i suppose thats wat episode 2 is gonna be about.

These things look like they are gonna be hard to kill, dunno wat they are called though:

http://putfile.com/pic.php?pic=6/15313452990.jpg&s=f5

and also those new flying things that make your vision and sound go funny, i wonder wat they are gonna be like to kill, imagine tryinfg to shoot at it with a rocket launcher while your vision is messed up lol.

I hope there are some new vehicles to drive, mabey a new weapon or 2.

Damn it finished! Quite unexpectedly, all in all it really is action packed with some epic squences, but is a bit short and somewhat of a cocktease.

The strider fight at the end was so awesome, but that was it! Surely after all that they could have put 4 or so of them in a huge arena somewhere. The end sequence was awesome though, but the one strider anticlimax let it down a bit.

I loved the graphics and gameplay, i would strongly reccomend you play this if you enjoyed HL2

I think Valve became masters at cocktease. Everyone waited for ep1 to find out what happened after hl2.... and now we have to wait half a year more to find out what happened after episode 1.

Mini-striders.

You can actually spawn them in Episode 1 by opening up your console (~) and typing "npc_create npc_ministrider." They have no textures, but still attack and act normally.

update your graphics drivers and make sure your game is running then o nthe same settings as half life 2 was, that fixed some of the lagging problems i had myself.

Turn off HDR would help, original HL2 didn't support it I don't think.

With my rig, I noticed a huge increase in performance since the last Steam update, Now you can defrag the cached files to optimize the speed which is quite nice. This game looks beautifully stunning with HDR tone-mapping enabled, and I would recommend listening to the developer commentary to understand the dedicated work that has gone into making this expansion.

I'll have a review for the game sometime later this week with screenies for all you people with low-end PC's to admire. smile.gif

That was short but ingredibly sweet, loved the strider fight in the train station where it targets the shipping crates and nearly squashes you behind one. Gonna go through with the commentary as I loved it in "Lost Coast", hope they keep that now as its great to hear the work behind stuff. Its often forgotten which is a shame.

In an interview with Gabe Newell, he stated that the episodic content released for Half-Life 2 is actually Half-Life 3.

Eurogamer: Can you reveal the names of the places you visit in Episode 2?

Gabe Newell: Not yet! You'll see a teaser at the end that gives you a sense of what the environments will be like. Later this summer we'll give more details about Episode 2 - it's out by the end of this year, and three is by next year. Episode Two actually started simultaneously with Episode One. Robin Walker's heading up Episode One development, and David Spiros is heading up another team doing Episode Two.

Eurogamer: So why did you go for this episodic system?

Gabe Newell: The original Half-Life took us two years to develop. With a considerably larger team Half-Life 2 took us six years to develop, so we thought if we were going to continue our trend with Half-Life 3 we would basically ship after we had all retired.

We're trying to come up with a better way of getting more timely updates to our customers and also come up with something that didn't have the complexities. Projects increased logarithmically with how much we tried to do, so if you tried to put twice as much content or technology into a box it ends up taking you four times the amount of work, right, and so we're trying to figure out a better solution.

We left Half-Life 2 on a cliffhanger with the Citadel blowing up, Alyx is a couple of feet away from the explosion, so what's going to happen? People were pretty clear that they didn't want to have to wait as long as they had previously to find out what happened.

This interview is def. worth a read for HL2 fans of any kind. Gabe Interview

I am not sure if that's a good or bad thing, it will be a constant cocktease for us fans and I dunno if I can keep sane with it! What I am concerned with is how the Source Engine is going to stay up to standards against the newer games. I know Valve have said they can and have been adding things to the engine such as HDR but isn't there a limit to what you can do with a game engine even one as great as Source?

I don't know, we could take a look at various games...

Half-life was a way updated Quake 2 engine, it kept going ona nd on and on.

Lineage 2 uses an updated Unreal engine... now that oen impressed me, a MMORPG that updated an FPS engine to create rather nifty graphics, if not as impressive as todays latest and greatest, it still holds it own.

I see source being very upgradeable for Valve, as they said right now, they have made it so it runs on low-end machines. In time they will have the option of boosting it further.

Another example is Hal-life on PS2, remember the gfx update? Better models and ties that moved wow.gif

If the guys that made HL2 know anything, it's how to produce an engine that can last for years.

Yeah that's a good point and besides HL2 already has outstanding graphics when you feed it to a high-end system so it has potential to last with Valve constantly adding on to it.

Worth the money.

Running 1152x864 w/4x AA and everything else turned up (Including HDR, but no AF). I think it looks great, games like FEAR and Doom 3 look way to shiny and plastic-icy.

@BroDan What about Renderware? wink.gif

I got the game today and already did two chapters. It's just as addicting as the original game. Running on 1600x1200/AAx4/AFx16. The game is looking incredible, but I hope they don't make like 8 new episodes, because I doubt I'd be willing to pay for all of them.

To get back to my previous reply:

In an interview with Eurogamer, Gabe Newell revealed that the Half-Life 2 "episodes" are essentially Half-Life 3. He reasons that rather than forcing fans to wait another six years for a full-on sequel, Valve would release the game in episodic installments.

I guess that's all we need to know then about the future of Half Life.
