Hey look there's a movie too

And it has Solid Snake in it

Well, I gather that the new SSB was unveiled at E3, for the Wii of course. Now, this game is probably one of only three reasons I'll buy this console (The other two being retrocapability and the new Legend of Zelda), so I'm quite excited about whatever tidbits and pieces of information I can find. What do you think so far? I certainly wasn't expecting Pit, but Metaknight and Wario were pretty much givens in my book. I suspected they might add another Star Fox character, a villain like Wolf. One of the Beaumonts (sp?) from Castlevania also crossed my mind. Adding in Solid Snake, though, is probably the biggest suprise.

EDIT1: Corrected a name

Online multiplayer turned this game into an 11/10. The Wii will be the ultimate f*cking party console.

Also I read that the game will feature both classic controls and motion-based controls for those who want to use them. I'm inclined to stick with the GC controller, Smash Bros. is way too fast of a game to play otherwise.

I loved the original of this, so when (if) i get a Wii this will be one of my first choice games. Depending on its release date

Amen, man. Does anyone know if the Wii is still four controllers to a basic console?

Yeah, I hope they have the classic controls for most games for the Wii anyway. I've seen a picture of the controller, it looks like a gamecube controller and the "remote" slips into it IIRC.

Amen, man. Does anyone know if the Wii is still four controllers to a basic console?

Aye, I think it is. There's four ports in the top of the Wii for Gamecube controllers so definitely four-player for this game.

SSB Melee. was a great reason to get the Gamecube alone, I wasted so many hours on that game. It rocked, especially when you had four mates 'round. icon14.gif

Online multiplayer is confirmed for this right? If Nintendo are making the online service free, then I'm really going to be looking forward to this game.

Shame it's not a release title.

Smash Bros Brawl will NOT be using the Wiimote, the reason is obviously because the game is fast paced, and using the Wiimote may cause problems. Good for those who still play Smash Bros Melee though.

Online play will be free as well (they're still using their 'WiFi Connection' service), although the online play may retain simple options, the game will still retain it's unique fun value regardless, and should add a huge amount to the game.

Oh, and there's a sneak preview of the Snake stage now up on the official site, along with Snake's profile. Awesome stuff. ^_^

I'm definitly looking forward to Brawl although i would hvae much preferred it's original name. Super smach bros revolution but oh well.

The new characters are all like whatever to me. i didn't even know who pit was untill i asked my mate at school, i'm not really into oldie nintendo games so the charactors make no diffference to me. and Snake...Meh if we must.

graphics looks cool though icon14.gif

I actually like how they did Pit - the best I can put it is that he looks like a contender. He seems to be a serious character, much different to the largely useless/unused/unpopular likes of Pichu

No Wiimote - Excellent, I should probably get back to practicing. It's been a good number of months since I sat down for an hour to kick butt.

Free Online Play - Awesome, that's a nice touch. If you play against the same group of friends all the time, you eventually learn the details of everyone's styles and playing them becomes formulaic.

@ kippers - I would've preferred Revolution for the name of the system as well as the game, Wii is the worst console name ever in my book.

I've heard that they're dropping Mr. Game and Watch as well as Young Link for this game. Mr. G&W was a reall quest for me, not only in unlocking him, but as well as becomming proficient in using him. Few people were prepared to face someone who can actually use him reasonably well. I would also hope that Ganondorf is made more unique, as his current tank-clone of Captain Falcon is rather bland.

No Escape?

I like how you emphasized the name Pichu. Never liked that little rodent, along with Dr. Mario, Luigi, Young Link, Falco, or any other clones (exlcuding Ganondorf)

Pit- Looks like he's ready to open up the ole' can of what-for. I might specialize in him...I tend to go for fast characters. Plus, he's from Kid Icarus.

Wario- Hmm. Seems like a decent contender. The Wario Waft move would prove to add a certain spice to a match, but I want to see other moves that show he isn't just another Mario clone.

Metaknight- Nice, although expected, addition. I'm thinking he'll be something along the lines of a more unique Young Link, or possibly a bit like Roy.

Snake- Interesting. I want to see lots of stealth involved in his character; let's not just turn him into a Captain Falcon-esque fighter.

I agree that they should improve Ganondorf. Maybe add usage of his sword? I wouldn't mind a kind of hybrid between Captain Falcon, and Link. They should give him more ranged attacks.

I liked Game and Watch; he was a difficult character to master. Too bad he may be dropped.

Other new characters I want to see? Excitebike Biker, Kaptain K. Rool (DK's nemesis), Toad, Waluigi (as long as he isn't a clone), and maybe another Zelda fighter (Skull Kid?).

Man, I just remembered Doctor Mario. What another useless character, why not just go play as Mario? You know, he wouldn't have made a bad skin for Mario, but it just wasn't enough to justify a whole new character.

I was expecting Ganondorf to make use of some of the warlock magic he's known for, like those huge energy balls, but no, alas, he just copies Captain Falcon. The sword would be cool too. Thing is, you have to keep in mind game balance, a massive tank of a character with good ranged attacks might be a bit over the top - to this end, I think "Ganondorf" could be reduced to a medium character if he's given any sorcerous abilities.

It just crossed my mind that perhaps Ganon would be another character, or, a switch-version of Ganondorf (Like Zelda/Sheik and Samus/Zero-Suit Samus.)

I suspect Wario will be somewhat like how Bowser is now - Huge, slow, easily avoidable, but a beast if you get in close. I expect he'll have Area of Effect attacks galore, more than just the wario waft, so if he somehow closes on you, there'll be pain.

Most of the clones are characters that could be nice enough on their own if the developers give them their own move set. Luigi, Ganondorf, Marth/Roy and Falco are the best bets of the current clones, I think, for salvation. As for other Zelda fighters, I've heard people talk about Vaati or Fierce Diety link. Ridley would be an interesting character, if not perhaps a bit on the unworkable side (Big, strong, flies), as well as King Deedee and King K. Rool.

The Cheat Lord

There's alot of speculation from the trailer that more Fire Emblem things will be added, because on that one castle that is getting bombarded has the same flag from the Fire Emblem games.

Anyway, personally Metaknight and Pit look really awesome with their sword fighting skills. On Melee my favorite characters were Kirby/Marth-Roy/Pikachu. And Meta looks like he'd be the best of Kirby and Marth.

I just wonder though, how the heck is Samus going to change from armor to no armor? It's really getting on my nerves.

I've heard two diverging thoughts on the Zero-Suit Samus, one that certain events would cause her to lose her armor such as using the big energy blast thing a few too many times, the other being that she'd just change back and forth at will a-la Zelda/Sheik. The logistics of such an action are a bit fuzzy, admittedly.

I wouldn't complain if people wanted to post a top-12 list of characters they'd like to see either totally remade or created for this game, so long as it doesn't turn into the giant spamfest the similar thread in the SSB forum @ Nintendo did.

EDIT: My top twelve list:

1) Kind Dedede (Another large tank-like character, this time with a big hammer who has devestating short-range moves but suffers from mobility issues)

2) King K. Rool (DK is begging for another character, and the big Croc can deliver. I would think he would have his traditional incarnation, but the Kaptain, Baron Roolstein or Krusha K. Rool might show up in one form or another as well)

3) Simon Belmont (Just whip it. Third party characters now seem to be a possibility, and Castlevania's had a fair number of games on Nintendo systems by now)

4) Waluigi (Lanky, fast, jumpy character whose moves show off his incredible reach, but at the same time, a peculiar wobbly gait)

5) Ganondorf (Yes, I know he's already in SSBM, but he's probably the coolest character ever to be delegated to clone status and I think requires a total redo. Please, reduce him to a medium, or atleast a medium-heavy character so that he can use some of his sorcerous might to bombard his enemies from a distance. I'd say remove all the Falcon clone moves, replace them with original moves, possibly involving magic as well as his oft-seen but rarely used sword)

6) Ridley (If it could be done. Ridley is enourmous, thus heavy, and very strong, but his ability to fly negates the usual mobility weaknesses of most similar characters characters)

7) Grodus (But only if they're really lacking characters to fill up a quota. An interesting mixture of magic and technology, but combined with a fairly odd stature would make him an excellent choice in team matchs as the long-range artillery but could be poor in a one-on-one against the speedier characters)

8) General Scales (A large character who attacks ferociously in combat, he would take on the role of a slightly faster but slightly weaker SSBM-Ganondorf)

9) Star Wolf (Bigger, slower, stronger than fox with different technology representative of his connections to Andross)

10) Tatanga (A real classic villain from the early days of Mario for the Game Boy. A small alien who rides around in a space ship, he would have both close and distanced attacks at the expense of having a very low level of traction and any real punch behind his attacks)

11) Vaati (I know very little about this guy, but from what I gather he's a new LoZ villain who is a shape-shifting wind mage, but he looks interesting enough and seems to have a following)

12) Smithy (Another Mario relic, this time from Super Mario RPG. Made of iron, this cosmic robot something-or-other loves to make things to attack Mario and pals. Not sure how this would translate into the game, but the idea of pounding Mario over the head with a huge anvil appeals to me on a very base level)

Also, I ended up wasting a bunch of time and came up with some suggestions for levels

  • Playing on Bongo Bongo's Drum
  • Ganon's Castle
  • Playing on or infront of Exor as he tries to attack you

I will probably have more later

1. Excitebike Biker-

Aww yeah. Nostalgia, bitches. I think the dirtbike would add a whole new type of fighting. Flying across the stage doing a superman, and landing your front wheel on Pikachu's face, wheelie'ing on a fallen foe, perhaps a Smash move where he rides all across the screen, destroying all in his path? The options are limitless.

2. Kaptain K. Rool-

As Didier Sucks said, we need another a DK character, and Diddy and Dixie wouldn't be as unique as tank-like K. Rool. I'm thinking he could be like Bowser; slow, heavy, and a monster in melee combat. Just add some unique moves and we're set.

3. Toad-

Little bugger can run. I can easily see him as like Pichu, lithe and quick; really fast punches and kicks, but is toast when cornered. Best used for quick hit and runs around the stage.

4. Waluigi-

Again, Didier took the words right outta my mouth. Lanky, long strikes from an average distance, and can get around the stage. I'm imagining many jump and grab attacks.

5. Ganondorf-

My fave character in the series needs a much deserved revamp of his moves. Eliminate all his clone moves (once more...what Didier said) and add unique. Like a mish-mash of Zelda and ; ranged, weak witchcraft, but effective, slow, damaging punch (and sword?) moves when in close combat.

6. Skull Kid-

From LoZ: Majora's Mask. He'd be wearing the mask. Lots of impish, far off magic, and his two fairies as well. Up close, not much of a brawler, but can use his supernatural speed to his advantage.

7. Captain Olimar-

Protaginist from Pikmin. He can fling the Pikmin everywhich way, and each different color would inflict varying degrees of damage at varying speeds; i.e, purple would be the typical slow but strong while yellows would be the obvious quick and weak one.

8. Wolf O'Donnell-

The Star Wolf Dider was reffering too. Slower Fox, like Falco, but with many more technilogical moves, and perhaps one move featuring Andross...I dunno. Speaking out of my ass here.

9. Animal Crossing Guy/Girl-

Taking an axe to the other Smashers sounds appealing. The somewhat...crude graphics would be a comedic contrast to the other, high resolution characters. Sick bees on unsuspecting enemies, use the slingshot for shots from afar, etc.

10. Ridley-

We haven't really had a character who is solely aeriel vefore. A brawler who can fly above the competition, leaving openings for cheap shots, but then he can sweep down rip 'em up. Grabbing a Smasher and dropping them off th edge would be interesting.

11. Mallow-

Cloud ally from Mario RPG. I like the idea of being able to dissapate and then Also, turning enemies into snowmen, HP rain, smashing others with walking sticks...the simple, yet amusing pleasures.

12. Simon Belmont-

Yeah, he'd be cool. Many different items and such. Interesting techniques.

Didier, check this out for info on Vaati.

Stages:

-Animal Crossing town

-Excitebike Arena

-Ganon's castle

-Pikmin Planet

-Inside the moon from Majora's Mask

And that's all I got. Probably repeated myself with the character part...I'm tired. I tried my best to be descriptive.

  • 4 months later...

I can't wait for this game. I'd buy a Wii JUST for this game. A few characters I think they need to add.

Sonic the Hedgehog (and other Sonic related characters)- Enter a new level of speed. He could have such awesome moves. Plus Sonic Vs. Mario is like a genesis/snes fanboy's wet dream (not that I'm a fanboy of either system, I like 'em both).

Spyro the Dragon/Crash Bandicoot- I loved their games when I was younger, they're platformer-esque style is perfect for the series.

Harvest Moon dude- Hey, they could make him a good fighter...

Banjo-Kazooie- Used to love their games, too. They would definitely add a new element to the roster.

Rayman- Remember Rayman? 'Nuff said.

Mega Man- Remember the old Mega Man? 'Nuff said.

That's it for now. I might add more later.

Personal favorites of Melee include Roy/Marth, Pikachu (fast, etc), Link, Mewtwo and Yoshi. I don't really care for the rest, but Roy/Marth (they're the same anyways) better be in it. Of course, I'll settle for Pit.

still waiting to see Snake, I wonder how his movies will shape up.

It's also worthy to note this:

Translations of Sakurai's Journal

Sakurai, of course, is the head developer/producer/et-al of the game, and the head of the company producing it, so he is effectively god when it comes to Super Smash Bros Brawl.

#31-40: Non-Nintendo characters added into the game MUST have appeared on a Nintendo platform. They cannot be from a manga/anime. The tentative number of non-Nintendo characters to be added after Snake is 1-2, but this can still change.

Thank god. This still hasn't stopped a veritable plague of "Naruto 4 Bralw" comments in the Nintendo forums, though.

#81-90: Not all characters will return.

I'm suspecting some of the clones will go, myself.

#31-40: Sakurai starts by saying there wont be any manga characters. Then he begins talking about other companies characters to appear in the game. Among other things, Sakurai says that the character MUST have appeared on a Nintendo platform before. And to literally translate the last sentence (keep in mind this is in reference to the characters from other companies): "Anyways, at most we'll add another 1-2 characters [after Snake], maybe?"

So not many third party characters, perhaps only 1-2 more for a total of three. Workable, I think, for what is mostly a first-party character game roster.

#201-210: Sakurai says in response to an email asking only for well-known characters (like Mario, Link, etc.) to appear in SSBB, "Asking only for popular characters to appear in Smash...doesn't get me excited"

Well, I'm not sure what this means, but I'm guessing there'll be more characters like Mr. Game and Watch. Thankfully, though....

#171-180: Now that Smash is world-renowned, they don't want to include characters only popular in Japan. However, due to the success of the Fire Emblem characters, they still may.

Marth and Roy really annoyed me, especially since Roy was basically an advertisement for a Fire Emblem game, and Marth is his clone (Roy uses moves known to him in his game, even though he's unlocked after Marth), so I'm really hoping they don't do this again. But that's just me.

Nice. I really wasn't hoping for a fighter filled to the brim with third party characters anyway; it is after all a Nintendo brawler at heart, and I like it to mainly stick to that. Snake and Sonic would be exceptions, as they are so well known, but obscure anime characters would just be a waste of space.

And that's the exact reason I stay away from some areas of the Nintendo boards.

#81-90: Not all characters will return.

There really is no other option. Pichu and Luigi? Please. They are easily swept under the carpet like so much dust and fuzzballs. On the other side of the spectrum, fan favorites like Game and Watch and Captain Falcon's absence would be far too notable...I hope and think you're correct in that assumption.

Yes. As I mentioned above, too many third party characters would take away from the fact that this is a 'Tendo game. And that there won't be any manga characters? Icing on the cake.

Gonna stick on my agreeing spree and say I concur. Game and Watch was one of my favorite smashers from Melee, mainly because he was just so unknown and unexpected that he made for a really enjoyable fighter. And the attacks that were throwbacks to the old G&W? Priceless. I hope for more retro brawlers.

#171-180: Now that Smash is world-renowned, they don't want to include characters only popular in Japan. However, due to the success of the Fire Emblem characters, they still may.

Here I disagree. I thought Roy was a neat character to play as, mainly because he offered as a counterpart to Link, rather than Ganon who didn't use his sword. Sword fighting between the two was one of my favorite fighting tactics. Though I too think Marth was unnecessary, and his boyish looks only spurned more and more teenage girls to write painfully awkward Link/Marth yaoi fan fictions.

I don't disagree with one specifically, but rather the duo. Marth is vastly technically superior to Roy, yet his moveset does not suit him from his games, but he's more important to the Fire Emblem series than Roy is. Roy, on the other hand, from what I understand, was not even in a released game at the time of SSBM release and as such is basically an advertisment for the series. If they had left Marth, or Roy, I would've been fine - but they cluttered the roster with two similar characters which leave each other redundant.

As for clones, I'm hoping these go:

Doctor Mario (I mean, frick... It's Mario. Wearing a Doctor suit sarcasm.gif )

One of Marth/Roy (I prefer Roy to go, myself)

Pichu (Just... Eugh. Apparently though, very popular in Japan)

And I really hope Falco gets some slick new moves, as well as Ganondorf. Luigi is already a bit different from Mario, and I couldn't bear to not have Luigi in the game, but I still think he should become a complete, independent character not sharing movements with his brother.

I'm really hoping Sakurai pays distinct attention to Non-Japanese markets though. He proved this wasn't really a concern with Melee. With Brawl, he's claimed otherwise.... Yet what was the only country to get a poll to vote for their favorite character?

Japan bored.gif
