Every time the clock ticks is another second lost. You're older than you've ever been, and now you're even older. Mindlessly, you grab your car keys and open the door. The cold air hits you like thousands of pins sticking into every inch of your exposed skin. sh*t. You slam the door shut. The single lightbulb sways under the gust of air that came in.Outside, the radiation lingers. Outside, America, the land of the free, the New World, it's desolate. Not a soul. Cows lie dead in the fields. Birds, dead on the freeway. Albert Einstien said "I know not with what weapons World War Three will be fought with, but World War Four will be fought with sticks and stones." Sometimes, when it gets to be around night, I wonder. Did anyone else make it? I doubt it, though. Locked down here, I sometimes talk to myself. Out of necessity, I made a second consciousness. He's crazy. He has split-personalities and ADD and ADHD and takes Ridilin. His name is Kevin. Outside is the ruins of Washington D.C. After World War Three, and after the Second Cold War. This was no one's fault, and it was everyone's fault. I sit down in the small, dank shelter and rock back and forth. Was that small exposure to the outside enough? Am I infected? Each corner of this room seems dark and menacing. My single lightbuld is still swaying. I've read about death by radiation posioning. It's not pretty. Your hair falls off, your skin rots away, teeth shatter on even the softest foods. You go crazy with pain. But it's nothing compared to lonliness. I can't die of radiation. I don't have the stomach for it. It would be better to die here, now. No one who would miss me is alive, anyway. Well, there's Kevin, but...
