simmy_simbob
Get the forum fixed because its sooooo fricking slow!!!!! Can't someone go and clean out some of the posts which are older than 2months (or do SOMETHING) it would really help with making the forum faster, searching easier and easier to navigate... Just give it a thought
Kaj.
You've been here for less than a month, therefore, you know nothing. This forum has over 100,000 members, has recently switched from a Windows based server to Linux, so you have no input at all. The forums are plenty fast enough, and I'm on dial-up. Barguast
He has a point - it took me over a two minutes and three attempts to load the reply screen for this topic. It seems to be different for each user - quite a few have complained to me about it being too slow, but there are also others who have said that they're having no problems at all. Odd. The problem may again be down to the swollen database, although the forums had been running just fine for me a few days ago. The onslaught of '500 - Internal Server Error' messages may be something to do with it too - again, something that quite a few members seem to be experiencing while others don't. Kaj.
I apologise, my first post was more frustration than actual information. It's just that, you've been here for less than a month, yet decide to suggest that the forums are in a sense "broken". Everyone knows they are slow, but people don't feel the need to post topics. Why? Because they know that the admins and network staff are trying to get it all fixed. But yeah, the forums ARE slow as f*ck for me too, and that's assuming that I can actually get to them, because they seem to be down for me an awful lot. Sorry about my general annoyance before. simmy_simbob
No probs Kajun, i understand. My post was just an observation which was prying on my nerves so i thought id post to see if there was something which could be done. I understand the hard work which is put into maintaining a forum as big as this so it isn't like im complaining as such just something which is a nuisance more than anything... Mainland Marauder
I had a similar experience to Barguast in loading the reply screen for this topic - except it took me more like five minutes. I'm a dial-up dinosaur though I also got two "500" error messages in trying to load it up. The Forums have run very slow for me the last couple days to the point my activity in general has quite slowed. I know this goes in cycles, so I'll be checking back in. The key for us members is patience - it's a virtue. I appreciate everything the GTAF staff does in helping make things run more smoothly "You tell me exactly what you want, and I'll explain to you very carefully why it cannot be." PresidentKiller
That's what happens when you switch from Windows to Linux, Microsoft calls for a Jihad against you. Now, in all seriousness, I think the forums ran better before. Yeah, they had their slowdowns, but they weren't as random or as often as they're now. GTAF ran great for me from the time it came back online after the changeover until just a few days ago. Before that, I experienced a lot of lag and page timeouts. Now, I don't get timeouts, but pages tend to load slowly most of the time - then sometimes, it's as smooth as always. jelly
It's not like you pay for it. Let them take their time and stop whining.

There are problems, Tank/illy are working to fix them. But it does run better than on Windows, it's just these past few days something has broken, was pretty much fine before that. adam broke it. Demarest
Can't someone go and clean out some of the posts which are older than 2months (or do SOMETHING) it would really help with making the forum faster, searching easier I guess it would be helpful to have nothing to sift through. Though it would also be worthless. Searching only works when there's something to search through
DarthSlurpee
It's going pretty smoothly now, but over the weekend, it was horrendous. I have an extension for Firefox that counts the seconds for each page loading, and I was averaging 300-400 seconds per page on GTAF.

I hope you're not talking about something like 'fasterfox' that tries to do prefetching, if so then you'd be part of the problem. Prefetching does wonders for killing servers unnecessarily. adam broke it.
Sixdust
Well when I am using the forums I am using: -3mbps cable connection -Opera browser (firefox and internet explorer should bow down) It also seems to speed up my connection to all pages, with firefox, its a nightmare -Windows XP Pro SP2 -I allow the pages to load, I don't whore the refresh button -Intel and ATI based system -No firewall or virus protection, only the occasional spyware scans - I believe that all my ports arent forwarded properly though, since I am running through a router -RoadRunner ISP Well, I doubt this will help, but maybe we can organize a poll and see what kind of systems lag and what dont (I doubt it would help, but its good to know) To me the forums are the laggiest mofo's around, maybe we can figure out what the majority of users are using and it will point out what to optimize and what not to. anuj
Maybe the forum software along with an enormous f*cking db, combined with the constant stress of 300+ users concurrently is causing the server to inevitably die? That's just my thought, though. If that is true, then there really is nothing we can do until we complete the archiving tool and rewrite the board software.
