Loman
I made these to be icons in any Dock program that uses PNG icons: If you want to see this in higher resolution, here is Ralph before: and after: (I don't know what is wrong with imageshack, but the fullsize picture's background is transparent) What do you guys think? If you have any pictures you'd like in this style, let me know and I'll try. I think I could probably do any cartoon. Any cartoon that uses solid colors and lines

Loman
Thanks guys You can use them for whatever you want. I made them in photoshop, they're pretty simple actually. Give me a few minuites and I'll write a tutorial Tutorial: 1. Find a cartoon that you want to use the effect on (tip: make sure they have dark outlines and solid colors) 2. Change your foreground color to the color you want to affect first, then set your background color to a slightly darker version of that color. 3. Use the "Magic Wand" tool to select the color, make a new layer and then use the gradient tool to fill the selection with the foreground-background gradient. 4. Switch your foreground color to white, select the foreground-transparent gradient 5. Make a new layer, then contract your selection by a few pixels (select>modify>contract), the bigger your picture, the more you contract. 6. Use the gradient tool to fill the selection with the white-transparent gradient. 7. Repeat on the rest of the colors in the pic 8. Done I got my inspiration from a couple of gel tutorials I've read on the net. Just search google for "Photoshop Gel Tutorial" and apply it to a cartoon I might be able to do a few requests Edited June 4, 2006 by Loman

anuj
Pretty good work, man. I like the style, it reminds me very much of foood's work. To make it true XP style, all you need to do is add a slight dropshadow. How much is really up to you, but it gives it that finalized look that will make it pop off your desktop. Loman
Thanks I added a drop shadow to this one: (again, I guess imageshack doesn't do transparency on thumbnails, but the full size is transparent) The original image was this one: I didn't spend a lot of time on this, there are a few things I'd probably change Edited June 7, 2006 by Loman
CCPD
Looks great, I really like what you did with it, but maybe you could make the edges a bit smoother?!

Loman
This is sort of an improvement to the flaming skull, I left the dragon off this time the R* logo: and the Superman symbol: all of those have transparency when viewed full size. any suggestions for future work? Guybrush Threepwood
That's some amazing work, and your tutorial is easy to follow aswel. Excellent topic Maybe try your hand at a car to make it more cartoony. I'd like to see that.
Loman
Here are some more things I've done: Also, if you want to be able to use png icons on your desktop and/or you want to have multiple icon sizes on your desktop, I reccommend Aston. It's a shell replacement for windows, I've been using it for a couple of weeks now, I like it. I've had some success with using this technique on actual photos, I'll post some of those later
Made-Man
I like the way you do your work. Very nice transparent effects and such you got there. .. nice.

Loman
Thanks Here is an example of this technique applied to a photo: Before After: I only did the face, it took me about 5-6 minutes. The technique is the same as my tutorial, but you have to draw the highligts in yourself with the lasso tool. I also blurred the highlights, so they blend in with the picture more. If I did the whole picture, it would probably look better, but that's too much work when you're high, lol You can really tell the difference if you save the pics and flip back and forth in a picture viewer. Any suggestions for pics I could do? Faces are all I've really done so far, but I might be able to do something else
