Rob.
Hi, so as mentioned in the topic title i was wondering whether anyone else here liked those artists mentioned, my bass teacher told me about Spyro Gyra, and while some of it's quite old school it's still some great listening i find. "Catching the sun" is great. My mate got me into Brand New Heavies after we found out my Geography teacher had some of their stuff lying about on his laptop a while back, he had gone to a Brand New Heavies concert and the bassist had a spot light shon onto his plate of his bass and light up people in the crowd and reflected it into their faces, as if in the songs he was playing to them, said it was really good. Although i prefer their more earlier stuff as their new stuff is sort of R n' B and it sounds a little of to my liking. Also i want to know what's going on with their singer, as when my teacher had gone to see them he saw them with some new blonde singer different to the older one. My mate mentioned that so it got me wondering, he knows more about them than me. I got into Primus when i was about 10 after seeing them on MTV2 ages ago and the same mate i mentioned lent me one of their albums, not sure which one it was but it had "Uncle Sam" on as one of the first tracks, so if anyone knows which that one was then it would greatly appreciated. Lately thought i've been listening to Amus Moses for the lyrics and the live version of "Tommy the Cat" soem of the stuff that Les Claypool does is out of this world. It was the same mate that got me into them fully. Jaco Pastorius was just awesome, out of this world, some of the stuff i've heard with him in Weather Report was great especially the live performances. "Come on Come Over" being soem nice easy listening and "The Chicken" is greatly diverse. Again my mate raised his name so i got an ear into his stuff. So like, i was wondering is there anyone one else some of you could recommend to me, any comments would be greatly appreciated Edited May 26, 2006 by Rob_UK
*MURDOC*
Great stuff there. /\ Have you read the Jaco book, i recommend it. Have you heard Victor Wooten? If not, check him out, you wont be dissapointed, great technique. Theres another guy who is phenomenal on the "lots-o-strings" basses, but for some reason, his name escapes me. Phalanxe
Jaco was the best bassist alive when he was, er, alive. Wooten, as recommended by the guy above me, is also amazing. I have a dvd of him at some bassist workshop type of thing where he basically shows the fundamentals of his style. Really good stuff.
ISd3d
Omg you like etc. too?
lesfleanut
The primus album you speak of is antipop. As for other artists you might like, try madame blavatsky overdrive, sykotic sinfoney, and twentyagon for starters. I'm going to a few les shows in june (philly, nyc, boston, and toronto)... Should be a pretty killer week.

Thanks mate, i hadn't heard of it, and it's out today so after my exams i'll see if i can get hold of a copy. I looked it up on his website and it's great to see what he's produced in the Studio, although there's one thing i don't know, is it with his Frog Brigade, or is it a completely solo Les Claypool CD? No it's totally solo, he does have a few guest musicians including his daughter and son on a few tracks, but for the most part he plays bass/guitar/drums on the album. The touring band for the album will be his fancy band.

Have you ever seen the live version of Whamola i think it's called, i'm not sure what he plays, but it looks like 4 extended strings and he's hitting it with a stick, like one of the old country basses with no body just a neck that you can push and pull to give an extended note effect. lesfleanut
Yeah, I've seen him play it live, and I'll be adding 4 more to that list this july. The whamola is an invention made for him by a fan, it consists of one string with a crank that alters the pitch. Les plays it with a drumstick, it's pretty sick watching him do it. Here's a clip of the frog brigade playing whamola.

Rob.
That's awesome, i see what you mean with the crank and altering the pitch and stuff. Thanks for the link. So are you going to be going to the places he's performing live at, as in going to all his show's in one large trip? I recently got the Chicken Performed live in 84' it's awesome, he has the large band with him. I want to see what Felix Pastorius has as well, i've never heard any of his stuff.
