simplyunkillable
go to ths site and download_______________________________ http://www.rockstargames.com/classics/ are you touched? "source code" means the un-compiled .EXE, in a state that it can be easily modifyed in any way. a free download like that one only contains the complied code, where the .EXE cannot be modifyed. Miner
I signed it.(a long while ago, even twice, accidently) But getting unsure. If it can be modified in any way, What would happen to multiplayer? GTA2 needs same files, stuff. And could cause errors with modding tools. I think thats the reason why its not, realesed, the source code... It could plain screw up everything more then help. And source code is hard(i persume) for most people.
Sektor
There would be a version that is most popular, so you would just use that one unless you really needed a feature from another one. I wouldn't expect lots of versions anyway and compatibility could be added. The release of the source would give far more positives for multiplayer than negatives. Lantyz
I should note that a former DMA dev wants it released too. Has Rockstar (or Take Two, whoever holds the rights) ever actually made a statement about releasing the source code? And would it even be possible? I wouldn't be surprised if the source code was simply lost in the turbulent years DMA went through some ten years ago. Does the release of 9.6F means the source code was still around in 2004? B-$hep
When free version was released the game was fixed and recompiled. Originally it was made with MS Visual C++ 6.0, 9.6F was compiled with MS Visual C++ 7.0. Luckily with debug info, like in original EXE. They can't recompile a not existing source code and release a fixed EXE. And in 2004 DMA was already history, if not forgotten. But the sources they have are older than the Russian BUKA version. In Buka version 10.1 there are bugs fixed, that still present in GTA2 9.6F. The Rockstar version was compiled from c:\code\gta2\source\ folder, while the Buka one was compiled from c:\gbh\coop101release\ folder (it is the original version, as you can see the reference to early GTA2 name - GBH). Seems like they lost original sources. © Black Phoenix Edited July 3, 2009 by B-$hep
Sektor
Has anyone sent a letter or fax? Email is much more easily ignored and just doesn't get to the people in power. Who would be the best to contact? I guess we should try all their contact locations and people. These are the contact details listed on the domains. They might be out of date. Rockstar Games 622 Broadway New York, NY 10012 US Phone: 212-334-6633 Take 2 Games 622 Broadway 4th Floor New York, NY 10012 US Fax: 212-334-6644 I'd like this message to get to Sam Houser or anyone who has the power to make this happen. I know the chances are slim but I figure it's worth a try. Can you please release the source code to GTA1 or GTA2? GTA2 turns one decade old this year, so it would be great timing and it would be nothing but good publicity. The game is already freely available, so it couldn't hurt sales and would only be a good thing. I can understand that there might be some parts of the code that would need to be removed for licensing reasons but it shouldn't be anything that can't be replaced with an open source alternative. We would prefer it if the code could be made public but if you need to restrict the code to only certain people, there are skilled fans out there, who would be willing to sign NDAs and work on patches to GTA2 for free. Thank you for your time and for creating such fun and brilliant games. Edited September 16, 2009 by Sektor
B-$hep
I emailed to them, all i was got that my request was passed to R* headquarters for consideration and that's all. Maybe the support guy or girl just deleted my email after that. Of course it would be good if Dan or Sam get's the email. But i don't think that this email passes to them directly. But of course, we could try sending paper letter. Still, does the letter get's to the KEY people? Btw, i don't like idea that only few people will get the source. B-$hep
Correct address of headquarters is needed. I would send letter by postal mail right away if would know the correct address. The ones in here could be outdated. eMailing them doesn't seem to help. R* if you read this, please consider opening the sources.
GhostStorm
Just thought that the blokes who have done Car Jack Streets did the first GTA so maybe find the creators of that and drop them a line
B-$hep
I know some contacts but they don't reply. And i don't think that any retired stuff has sources. I have contacted them for other reasons. But R* has the sources, so we need to contact directly to Dan or Sam Houser. Only they can do something about it. GhostStorm
I will call Patricia Pucci tomorrow she is the UK PR Associate of Rockstar Games and see what she says in regards to who should be contacted. I will also contact Paul Farley Managing Director of Tag Games and ask him for some info as its 2 of Tag Games staff that created GTA 1 in the first place thats why Car Jack Streets looks just like it. elypter
I don't understand that !!! If the source if so precious that they cannot release it, why did the loose it?
Sektor
They might not have lost the source to the v10.3 patch, maybe just the guy who compiled the free version didn't know there was a v10.3 patch or didn't have time to track it down. v9.6 source would be fine anyway.
