Majestic
35 right now, but that's just with firefox open. @Maj: How is it possible to only have 10 processes? My computer has at least 25 system and network processes. You can run with only 2 services. Plug and Play Remote Procedure Call probably can even remove Plug and Play, but need to reboot. Subtract task manager and firefox, and you have 8 processes. Then launch 3dmark06 - which you can launch through task manager. How about this? (click to enlarge) Subtract taskmanager, explorer, and procexp and that leaves one process: csrss.exe and System. Edit: before anyone asks, the reason MSN Messenger's icon is visible in the system tray is because when a program is killed via the task manager, their icon is not removed from the tray and will not vanish until you hover your mouse over it. How did you kill winlogon/lsass/smss? you killed it through process explorer? So in other words, you cant login/logoff/shutdown and have a dysfunctional system. There's a sequence you can take to kill all processes except csrss.exe. http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/07/r...o-services.html And yes, it's dysfunctional, but I never said it wasn't. the_darkside_986
I counted 61 on mine. But I guess Redhat Linux 9 handles processes a bit differently than Windows XP. I only have 128 MB so a 40 MB java program (I won't mention the name of it) always freezes up the system whenever the screen saver comes on and I move my mouse to make the screen saver go back off The motherboard only supports up to 256 MB of memory. Sillyhed2000
Heh, I thought it said 'how many processors' and started getting tripped out when people claimed to have 45 processors running at once. That said, 27.

No, I don't even know what Azureus is, but I know that I hate java applications at this point in time. Last night, I closed out a process known as "metacity" to help squeeze the java runtime environment in, and almost crashed the Gnome desktop . The top of my windows went completely dark with no buttons. Metacity is the thing that lets one close and maximize windows and move them around the screen, I suppose. I didn't realize that until yesterday, but luckily it immediately restarted. @Cran: How do you edit the "startup list" in Windows? I never could figure out how to modify that Edited April 26, 2006 by the_darkside_986

I never could figure out how to modify that Azereus is a bittorrent client, which dosn't immediatly classify it as warez, so it's fine. For your startup list, go to your start menu, then run, and type in "msconfig". Then go in there, and it is in (I think) Startup.ini.
Wolf68k
I currently have 28 running. How many can I kill and still keep going for my normal use: taskmgr.exe <-duh firefox.exe FileZilla server.exe explorer.exe - the one being used by Windows Explorer IHateThisKey.exe uphclean.exe AsusProbe.exe NOPDB.exe NPROTECT.exe - but then I lose the ablity to use Norton UnErase to recover files rtvscan.exe - but then I lose virus protection spoolsv.exe - MS printer spool service, not a big deal if I don't want to print anything vptray.exe - again I'd lose virus protection ccapp.exe - more av protection ccevtmgr.exe - and more av protection ccsetmgr.exe - yet another part of av protection 15 that could be killed; making the total lucky number 13 how can u stop all of the stupid svchosts? Unplug yourself from the internet. Correct me if I'm wrong, but svchost is your ISP's doing. That has nothing to do with your ISP. That's a MS program running handling DLLs. This should answer any more questions about it. iPodService is part of iTunes more then QuickTime. If you don't have an iPod you can disable this service. Start->Run type: services.msc Find the iPodService and double-click on it. Find: Start Up Type and set it to Disable You can also click the Stop button to kill the service now and no need to restart.
