Cran.
Like the title says, out of bordem. Me: 67. Yeah, I know, just lots of un-needed processes. 5 MSN ones, PS, Adobe Premier, Skype and whatnot. How many do you have running?

Jack_Knife
45 as I type this. Which is about normal for me. I guess there's a bunch of unneeded stuff, but I'd rather just have it all running so when I need it, it's there. the_darkside_986
64. I'm running a Windows XP Pro machine from the computer lab here on campus. It's got 1024 MB of memory, and only 100-200 MB of that is available . And I guess when 4 GB of memory becomes a standard in the future, 80% of it will be wasted on background processes. I don't feel like closing all these and half of them are SYSTEM.
iamdigitalman
an efficent 27, including the finder. Finder's bloated as f*ck. takes 123.6mb all to it's self. 512mb of ram, with 301.7mb free. damn I really want a gig. just need 4x256mb PC-100s. only'll cost me $100 total. right now I have 4x128, and those were in my parts bin, so a cost of $0. btw, im on a mac. my Power Mac (desktop) machine. when my powerbook's fully charged, i'll wake it and let you know. facugaich
I think I'm below 20 proceses, my machine's only got 192 MB of RAM and to run XP SP2 properly I try to keep background stuff tidy and clean.

Majestic
35 right now, but that's just with firefox open. @Maj: How is it possible to only have 10 processes? My computer has at least 25 system and network processes. You can run with only 2 services. Plug and Play Remote Procedure Call probably can even remove Plug and Play, but need to reboot. Subtract task manager and firefox, and you have 8 processes. Then launch 3dmark06 - which you can launch through task manager.

(click to enlarge) Subtract taskmanager, explorer, and procexp and that leaves one process: csrss.exe and System. Edit: before anyone asks, the reason MSN Messenger's icon is visible in the system tray is because when a program is killed via the task manager, their icon is not removed from the tray and will not vanish until you hover your mouse over it.
