Cushion
Hi there people, you might remember me from GTA San Andreas and GTA4 topics, but I just downloaded GTA 1 and I want to start modding it. I used to want to mod all the time, because I was a developer see, but my modding was useless. All I learnt was coding for a stupid program GAME MAKER and I cant bother learning another coding language for it. Modding my San Andreas is not my thing, and I would love to make a whole city with missions for GTA 1. FIRST OF ALL: I would like to know HOW to mod GTA1. Is it the same as the 3D ones, or is it easier? And also, do you have to learn a coding language just to mod it? If you, by any chance at all, can give me an updated link that actually works it would be great. What I am looking for is... -A city editor, which is the main one. -Heaps of sprite directory's for characters Im new to this whole thing so if anyone can find a working link to those, and a simple program, many thanks. I will keep you updated here on my GTA city, which if succesful, will be posted here for all of you to see. And remember, I have lots of time on my hands! Sektor
For editing the missions you will need to learn the GTA scripting language/format of the mission file. For editing importing/exporting sprites/graphics there is gtacars, it's pretty easy to use. Check Cerbera's list of GTA1 important editors for links to more GTA1 ediitng tools. I'd prefer mods for GTA2 but if you really like GTA1 then go for it. Edited April 20, 2006 by Sektor
--Cole--
Hey, is it possible to retexture the old GTA's? Like put in hi-res photorealistic textures in place of the sh*tty olskool GTA stuff?
Sektor
Not really, the engine limits the size of the tiles. You could use multiple tiles to make it seem like the roads and building were higher res but then you would have less tiles overall. I don't think you can make the vehicle or ped sprites any larger. Yes, in fact he can, if he does it the correct way, but still, you need to retexture like, 10.000 tiles or something. @ abeco, I think it's better to mod GTA2, first of all, there is a bigger community, second, Delfi made a whole lotta editors, which are easy to use. There are also official Map Editors and a file with all scripts in a .doc. Edited April 23, 2006 by MrKooKie
Cushion
Yes I think GTA2 would be a good modding game. I am still trying to mod GTA1, but if nobody can find a decent manual or something then I'll move on with GTA2.
Faze
It's great to see people who still mod GTA1. Kind of brings a tear to my eye.... http://www.gouranga.com/nf-downloads-maps.htm Reference link to some editing tools and other maps. Back in 2001-2002, I had a miniproject for GTA1. The ill-fated unpreviewed/unreleased mod contained some of my first cars, and some decent textures. Sadly the map files and mission.ini have been lost with my old comp. Basically the map was a test course for GTA sprites. The maps that are there might or might not be so great. Burger city is certainly one of my most favorite GTA1 maps to date, ditto to illspirit's SSGTA and snowball city mods. Sure they might be released back in '99 and look a bit dated... they still kicked ass.

BenMillard
This area is for the old editions of GTA, from the late 1990's. Your question sounds like it is for GTASA, a recent edition. Try asking in the GTA Modding > Editing Discussion > Troubleshooting area.
