Films so good... they suck

Why did people like "Top Gun"? I f*cking loathe that movie, with all my being.

Also, Passion of the Christ sucked. However, I think most critics also disliked it.

Would Titanic count? it won the oscar and that, despite being a complete load of bollocks. Apart from when the ship goes down, and that dude falls and just smacks against the fan/propeller thing, that was f*cking hillarious.

Yes, I'd add it to the list, the Cinematography was good but other than that, it definitely wasn't worth the hype.

Most of this is down to personnal experience and probably your location, in America Napoleon Dynamite was probably well recieved, but in the UK, as far as I remember it was one of those straight to DVD films, probably becuase the 'humour' wasn't our taste, but even so it still wasn't funny.

It works both ways, some folk I know think that North by Northwest was rubbish.. well f*ck em how can they say that, it was one of Hitchcocks best, but again personal opinion... even if the perfectionist that is Hitchcock left in the blooper during the Gunshot at the Mount Rushmoor cafe.

I thought the music from the opening credits was nice

Yeah I liked it too, the white stripes wrote and sung that song free of charge cause' they knew it was being filmed on such a low budget.

Umm, We're Going to be Friends was on the album White Blood Cells, which came out three years before Napoleon Dynamite.

didn't know. maybe i should research a bit more before presenting my facts.

i thought it was OK, the fight scenes cancelled out the boring storyline for me.

i'd rekon the wedding crashers is one that pisses me off. or any new movie with owen wilson and/or ben stiller and/or jack black (the dude from school of rock or whatever). they are just in so many movies i'm getting sick of them. especially jack black, he is not funny, he is just fat.

I loved Napolean Dynomite. Maybe I'm not cynical enough to hate something just because everyone loves it. Honestly, if no one had talked about the film and you found it by chance at your local video store and gave it a shot you'd be calling it this hidden gem of a movie, but since everyone and their mom quotes it, god forbid you be associated with anything so...mainstream.

Though I guess I'm being cynical my self by assuming that's the reason you don't like it. Could be you just don't find it funny.

I tend to dislike anything with Nicole Kidman in it. Just because the critics seem to be unwilling to criticize her. The Human Stain wasn't well recieved by critics but of course it wasn't her fault, even though she played a leading role. I'm starting to see the same with Charlize Theron. It's like these guys have these agendas to paint certain actors/actresses in a goodlight all the time and others in a negative light all the time. Tom Cruise would be an example of the latter. The Last Samurai seemed grudgingly praised.

The godfather sucked

Napoleon Dynamite blew

Star wars episode II sucked

Titanic was horrible

Meet the parents and fockers were both lame

Brokeback Mountain is just icon13.gif I hated it sooo much.

Oh He's having butt sex, lets all dance around the movie and worship it. Why dont you all just nominate a couple gay porns while you are at it. Almost pure butt sex.

There are always those kids movies that all completely blow and now a days no one is original. You have almost identical movies coming out constantly (especially the anumated kids movies) and then there are all those remakes that are icon13.gif

Nowadays I would just rather watch TV or obtain bootlegs of box office hits, rather than see them, one exception being V for Vendetta. I loved all three matrix's, reloaded was the best in my opinion. Star wars episode I was okay, remember the dual lightsaber battle? That was like the highlight of the movie. Hollywood needs a slap to the face and some inspiration nowadays. Now, because of brokeback Mountain, you have all these other movies coming out about gay themes, like transamerica and some other movies. Hollywood is icon13.gif

Above all, make it your duty to put a bullet hole in each and every person who dismisses Ang Lee's masterful film as "the gay cowboy movie." If it were only that -- lurid, deliberately shocking, and politically charged -- it be would be instantly forgotten and justifiably criticized. Instead, this is a film of such thorough humanity that one quickly forgets such arbitrary assignments as gender or sexual preference. Few films have better captured the confusion of love and lust, and the sheer impossibility of their denial. Woody Allen said it best -- "The heart wants what it wants" -- and these two men, far from activists or proponents of a "lifestyle", would likely deny any homosexual leanings whatsoever, believing instead that they have an uncontrollable attraction that cannot be labeled. The settings are lush, inviting, and comfortably in the epic vein, but the sights and sounds never overwhelm the story, and Ennis and Jack never resort to caricature or farce; they are, in fact, some of the most effectively realized characters in years. And who doesn't long for such a place as Brokeback Mountain? Where one's self can be fully realized without artifice or compromise? In that sense, the story takes on the aura of myth; for only in fantasy can we exist in such a carefree fashion. Our boundaries -- our reality -- bring only sorrow and death.

I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but...yours is wrong.

But to stay on topic, I didn't like Crash at all. While the film tried to convey a worthwhile message, it was the equivalent to someone screaming through a bullhorn that "racism is bad!"

The film lacked any subtility.

Wow that is such a hypocritical statement, its not even funny, first you say its alright to have an opposing opinion, than you say my opposing opinion is wrong? Matt Cale knows how to change the plot of a movie to sound more attractive. Either eay the only reason most people went to see it was because of the hype and political incorrectness and such. Matt Cale cas suck a nut, heck two if he likes that movie so much.

@Gareth Croke: Its not the movie was horrible, it was extremely overhyped to the limit.(same as napoleon dynamite) Everyone said it was great and stuff, but there were only a few select momemts that made it funny. It was a chick flick with a bit if humor in it.

Also add on to my list: Tim Burtons Corpse Bride and Nightmare before christmas. Both were chick flicks and were a snooze to watch.

great way to put into words what i was thinking aswell.

i usually like mainstream movies. but then again, the ones that i end up watching, my friends normally watch before i do. they have the same sorta taste in movies that i do so i don't normally watch a movie that i probably won't like. get me?

napoleon dynamite was good. i didn't watch it the first time my friend bought it over because i thought it was a sequel to that movie "napoleon" or whatever it was with that little labrodour dog in the ballon. silly me.

Don't sugest that just because people didn't like Napoleon Dynamite it was because everyone else liked it, people in this thread may have mentioned the hype, but no one has said anywhere their distaste for the movie come from everyone elses love for it. I for one even said I was looking forward to seeing it. Someone's opinion differs to yours and you go the petty route of trying to deminish what they said with accusations you have no basis for. Very clever.

Same goes for Brokeback Mountain. Saying people are making a big deal out of it because a character get's arse f*cked, do you know how ridiculous that sounds? it had a great cast who gave great performances, and a heartbreaking love story.

I'm all for being imature, but some of you are just complete imbociles at times.

I finally watched the 40 year old virgin on the flight back to London last night, apparently, it was some really funny sh*t, it was amusing, but there weren't any laugh out loud moments. Greatly disappointed. And Wedding Crashers, that was pure crap, it's like, where the f*ck is the funny?

I put the most legitimacy in your argument about seeing the movie from a Brit's point of view. I imagine it would be like me watching Shaun of the Dead (which I haven't) from the point of view of an American.

But if we're completely honest with ourselves; yes people have different tastes, but you know just as I do that there are those that can't stand to be associated with anything mainstream. God forbid they have anything in common with the unwashed masses. Like I said, maybe I'm being just as cynical in saying that as those who actually feel that way, but I'm definitely not completely incorrect.

@Gareth Croke: Its not the movie was horrible, it was extremely overhyped to the limit.

Hype shouldn't affect how you view the movie. Like you said, it wasn't horrible, so why should the pre-release hype play into your perception of it. Granted, it's easier said than done to ignore the bombardment of ads, talk show segments, commercials etc., that come with a hgih profile movies release, but a movie's quality should be based on the movie itself.

I suppose I should have known better than to attempt to use a slightly joking and sarcastic statement over the internet. It seems to have sailed right over your head.

Anyways, just because as you say "most people" went to see the movie because of the political incorrectness and hype, does not mean the movie was no more than, shall we say, controversy for controversy's sake.

The Sound of Music is fine. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was crap.

TOY STORY IS ONE OF THE GREATEST FILMS EVER. Not only do I love it, but I think Rotten Tomatoes gave it 100% and also for its sequel...an extreme AND I MEAN EXTREME rarity.

Napolean Dynamite gets good after a few watchings. My favorite part was when that girl comes to the door and says "I'm selling this stuff so I can go to college" and then Kip who is offscreen inside the house says "your mom goes to college." lol...

The 40 Year Old Virgin was a huge letdown. A lot of people claimed that it was the funniest movie in years...

Space Balls was total crap. I've been forced to watch it with friends way too many times.

And all my friends didn't like Brokeback Mountain. Sounded like, it was boring, they had butt sex, it was boring, then the credits holled. Like the only thing that the movie had going to it was that gay guys were the main characters.

I'm not going to see it.

are you brit? i'm australian and i bought shaun of the dead before i'd even seen it, the main character i had previously seen him in that show Black Books (i bought all three seasons of that, i will never get tired of that show) and from his performance in that i knew he'd be great in shaun of the dead. british comedy is fantastic, i'm sure americans would agree.

ps. even though shaun of the dead came out before black books..didn't it?

I like some British comedy, especially the Wallace & Grommit movies. I was just saying that maybe Napolean Dynamite was something that might be more appealing to Americans.

Snot ass critics will hang me for this but I am the damndest surprised no one has mentioned Citizen Kane yet. I watched in a movie class I had back in high school and I didn't find it to be the grandest masterpiece all these film snobs make it out to be. Ironically, I am lenient on most films like Napolean Dynamite (although it's hype is annoying as sin) and The Godfather (Way too long but the movie had colorful characters).

Another worthy mention is Garden State. Arthouse Fagdom at it's worse.

Citizen Kane wasn't that bad, but as you say it was given far more than its worth, kinda like Dr Strangelove a movie I couldn't understand all the hype about.

As for Garden State, well I'm a bit biased there as I think Zach Braff did a marvellous job of that one, I think any hype of it spawned off the back of Scrubs which blinded alot of critics eyes into looking at it properly, which to say it was quite a good film but it probably wouldn't have got all the atttention if it wasn't Zach Braff doing it.

I absolutely positively cannot stand Scarface. No idea if that was critically aclaimed or not. The Excorcist is pretty sh*tty too.

Titanic was another one of those awesome movies that never stood out to me. Fahrenheit 9/11, Troy, The Polar Express.

But the worst best movie in my opinion goes to Requiem for a Dream.

Well I'll say this, Napolean Dynamite is a satire in a way, if you do not know people like the characters in the movies, you most likely wont enjoy it.

And for Brokeback Mountain, okay it was a fairly good movie but it is NOT the love story of the year, the sex in that movie is not passionate, it's, "drop your drawers and grab your toes, I'm gonna show you where the wild goose goes." sh*t, I mean honestly, I believe if there was just one he would have been f*cking the sheep.

And as for Garden State, loved it.
