So far I found none that filled my requirments, either they have adware with them or are not free or don't actually make downloads faster. Fozzy Fozborne Posted April 16, 2006 Share Posted April 16, 2006 (edited) Well, Download Accelerator Plus 8 seems to get good marks, Cnet gave it 4 and the users 3.5/5. One thing to remember, is that if you are using dial-up or a slower connection a download accelerator will NOT improve download performance beyond your maximum bandwidth. But, if you have a fast connection like me (4 Mbps) you will only get about 100 KBPS on each download, so that would help me. Wolf68k Posted April 16, 2006 Share Posted April 16, 2006 I like FlashGet. Now it's not free and it does display ads however it DOES NOT install adware programs to display those ads within itself. The price is $30USD but it's well worth it and all upgrades are free, unlike many for programs like it in the past that I've used...upgrades were free but only within the same key version number eg: 3.x or 4.x but no free upgrade from 3.x to 4.x just an upgrade price which is less than the full price. FlashGet also has an extension for Firefox called FlashGot, but it can also work with some other programs. FlashGet can do more than just help speed up downloads, but also help you to do batch downloads. For example say there is a series of pics you want to get from a site and they are named pic001.jpg and run through pic999.jpg. You can tell FlashGet what the URL is http://www.somesite.noclick/pic•.jpg and to get the number 001 through 999, even if some in the series are missing the string of numbers (say that 080-089 are missing) it was still a lot easier than having to use the browser to get them for you manually one at a painful-time. Wolf68k Posted April 17, 2006 Share Posted April 17, 2006 Ok wait, back the train up. You're on dial-up?? Using a program like this will NOT speed up your downloads. However what it will do is allow you to queue up a bunch of downloads to be done one at a time. Plus allow you to resume downloads if your connection drops. But it will not speed anything up. You're stuck at whatever your dial-up connection is, at the extreme max 10k/sec. Queueing your downloads will seem to speed things up, but that's all. You'd be better off tweaking your registry settings for proper dial-up settings. You won't see much of a speed increase but the speeds will become more stable keeping them as high as possible. I'd like to tweak the registry settings to get some more juice with my dial-up until I get my DSL connections (probably next week), but I don't know nothing at all about this. imheretostay Posted April 22, 2006 Share Posted April 22, 2006 Sorry for bumping this, but I have a warning. Do not get Download Accelerator Plus 8. I got it (can't remember from where though) and it brought me a nice little gift, win32.email.worm.anker.q. I googled it, and lots of people have traced the worm back to DAP8.
