Spell check option thingy ma bob

Well i was on another forum and it was Invision and uses BBcode like us, and once you wrote your reply there was a spell check option. I thought this is a good idea as it annoiying to go back and read and find youve spelt something wrong, or copy and pasting into word. You always see some one writing (sp?) next to difficult words.

The Spell Checker, as you can see it scans the words, tell you how many are correct and if they are wrong it highlights them in red, then you look through the list to see which is the correct spelling and click correct. It then changes it. (click to enlarge)

I'm not really against the idea, but I doubt it will help much at all. I'd imagine it might also be a further kick in the shorts to the server.

There are many ways to check your spelling. dictionary.com is the one I use.

If you're actually worried about your spelling, you could always type your post up in MS Word (or Word Perfect, whatever you use) and then copy and paste it. It's not as though people will think of you differently if you spell a word or two wrong, unless you do it so often that it's difficult to understand. Or you know, you could always brush up on your literacy skills by reading or something. I recommend Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy, f*cking good book.

I know about copying and pasting, just felt it was a bit easier, all you do is click what word you need and bing, its done.

I don't think it would be that easy, or help much because it's usually not mandatory to use it, you choose if you want to run the check. I'd imagine that most of the people that don't spend the time to spell correctly would be the same ones to never run it. If you did make it so you had to run it before you could post it would just put some extra strain on the server, and be annoying for the people that do spell correctly.

 

Then there's the fact that if it comes up with more than one option and the person doesn't know which is correct they might just pick the wrong one anyway.

 

I'm not sure how good the grammar checking part is, or if these add-ons even have them, but without one the "ill" in your pic would be spelled correctly. Most of the spelling errors I see are of that type. People who don't know the difference between "your" and "you're" will be just as screwed with or without a spellchecker. Then there's the fact that quite a few words used on here aren't proper words, and would come up as being spelled wrong. The only answer to that would be a custom dictionary, which would be even more trouble.

 

I see it as something that could cause quite a few problems while not completely solving any. To me it just seems to be more trouble than it would be worth.

I'd say that would probably be a decent knock to the server's testicles. Use Word. Then you won't have white-screens on GTAF!

White screens result from hitting a server in the...? Nevermind. I'll stop kicking the servers in the nuts.

 

Really though, for how few people actually use proper spleling adn grammer here (and then there are those who are so far off the spellcheck won't help), it's definitely not worth stretching these servers' resources further IMO. The white screen, I hate much.

Could we come up with a mod for the board that when a spelling/grammar nazi tries to complain about someone's spelling/grammar, THEY get kicked in the nuts?

If I'm not mistaken there are browser plugins that allow you to right-click on selected text and have a spell check option in the popup menu. Such local things would be much better than wasting server time for some people's spelling inabilities.

Yup, the Google toolbar. You can even install the toolbar, delete everything else and just have the spellcheck neatly positioned somewhere.

It sounds like a good idea, but c'mon now.

 

Do your own damn spell checking. This is just a feature for the lazy. Spellchecking seems like a feature that should be added when we have so much extra power on that server that we don't know what to do with it.

 

besides, we wouldn't be abe tp type in w00t or h4x0r and all that good junk.
