"Toreno's Last Flight" AK/rockets stay on helipad

Recommended Posts

Mainland Marauder

This is a minor find but I thought it was worth its own topic after some confirmation from gillies and pdescobar, and failing to find it mentioned anywhere on the Forums besides my Weaponry FAQ thread and (in passing) Nitpicking topic.

When you get to the helipad at the San Fierro police station on the mission "Toreno's Last Flight," you see pickups for an AK-47 and a rocket launcher. You don't need to take them (Toreno's chopper leaves as you approach the helipad, so the items don't trigger the chase or anything) so if you use your own weapons to take down the chopper you can come back later and see the pickups still on the helipad, in freeroam.

I've confirmed that they don't reappear after you take them, like normal weapon pickups, but rather are use-once only. However, the rocket launcher pickup is worth 60 rockets. Pretty cool.

The most useful thing about this I suppose is for rebuilding your arsenal after losing it in "The Da Nang Thang." You can recover your regular guns and such at Ammu-Nation or wherever, but you might have amassed a lot of rockets and this is a quick way to regain them.

Very nice, I never knew this because I always thought the weapons dissapeared no matter what.

I thought so too, until I did a playthrough without picking up those weapons in the mission and later found them on the helipad while driving around it.

Since "Toreno's Last Flight" and "The Da Nang Thang" are pretty close in the mission sequence, that quantity of rockets would probably be better used after the latter mission.

To be fair to the pandas, pdescobar first theorized in my FAQ topic that they appeared only if you don't pick them up, in addition to confirming this works on XBox as well as my original PS2 version. I think gillies plays PC, so I'm assuming this is good for that version too.

I wanted to take this to a separate topic so people doing a search of topic titles looking for help on "Toreno's Last Flight" can come across this interesting little tidbit about the mission. icon14.gif

Is right to mention that if you had hard time to take down the helicopter you could grab some heat seaking rockets from the airport? Even you need a pilot license to enter (that you don't have at that time) you can park a car just beside the little house where the security guard is and jump over to gain access and go where the rockets are (just in between the 3 oil/petrol tanks) But you have to know the route that the chopper gets because if you don't grab the weapons the game gives you, you won't get the chopper signal in the radar.

That's precisely what I did, as I personally prefer the heat-seekers (especially for this mission as the chopper is always moving away from you rather than hovering over you as is typical with situations where you would have to shoot one down) for this mission. I had exploited frozen wanted levels on missions to boost my HSRPG count with the Aldea Malvada and Whitewood Estates pickups as well, but Easter Bay Airport is generally where I pick them up at this point of the game.

As long as CJ is not too fat, he should be able to jump up and grab onto the gate security cabin's roof to climb over. No need for a car to park, though it can make it easier for some. Jump ahead of the base of the cabin and time your jump so that CJ's hands meet the ledge of the roof at your jump's greatest height. Alternately, a way to enter this airport is driving with a vehicle at a high speed off the cliff to the east of the Easter Bay tunnel (the part where there is the least water to cross) and drop down onto the tarmac just east of the hangar building south of the Maverick. You stand a good shot of flipping and destroying your vehicle, but you're where you need to be.

perhaps you grabbed them on the mission or saved and reloaded...

I never really bothered to check and see if the rocket pickup is there or not... but if I really wanna rebuild my arsenal, I can go to the airport 6 times and grab the rockets there (saving in between each run). Still good find tho rah.gificon14.gif

Definitely, but if you want to rebuild your rocket stash quickly while saving time if you're trying to beat the record 100% completion time, this is the way to go biggrin.gif

I'm curious, what's the 100-percent completion time record?

Also, on another note, on the ps2 I had heat-seeking missiles already when I beat everyone on the heli-pad, and it wouldn't start the helicopter cutscene until I grabbed the regular rocket launcher (and of course, that replaced my heat-seeking RL's.) Any idea what that was about?

EDIT: It's also funny, on my first time through the game, I spent an hour loading up rocket launchers from the airport, and it was right before the "Da Nang Thing." D'oh!

That's strange, because I play on PS2 (version 1) and the chopper is always taking off as I approach the helipad. I don't bother with the pickups. I just book it for the freeway, get within range, get out of the car and fire a bunch of heat-seekers at it.

I think the record without cheats for 100% is like 36 hours, but I don't know for sure. icon14.gif You might search for it because I'm sure it's posted on here somewhere.

That's what I always do, I just go right after it, and don't bother with the pickups, because I

usually have what I need.

The couple of times I played through, the red helicopter dot didn't show up until I grabbed the regular RL's. Maybe the helicopter was already flying but the red dot didn't show up on the map. I'll have to check it next time. I know I stood there for about 5 minutes trying to trigger the helicopter appearance (or at least the appearance of the red dot on the map) without picking up the regular RL's, and it didn't work. And the helicopter didn't get a 5-minute head start either.

Maybe I was shooting the guards from too far away. Or doing something that caused the usual trigger to not work, so I had to trigger it by grabbing the regular RL's. Oh well.

Yeah you must be doing something unusual to stop it working properly. Taking the pickups shouldn't cause any change in this mission. You should just need to get up on the stairs next to the helipad and once you do that the helicopter should take off.
