It does open up after Last requests like Demarest said, but there is a glitch that

 

if you drive a car up the ramp very slowly, you can pass through the barricade.

 

EDIT-Actually, I'm not sure if it works on Xbox but it does on PS2.

Or you can just jump across the girders of the bridge from the very start of the game. It may take a bit of practice, but once you get the hang of it, it's easy as .

I've heard about the Callahan girders trick, but is there a legitimate way to get across the Staunton Lift Bridge while it's still closed? I tried to use the subway to get to Shoreside Vale, but the gates were closed.

 

(P.S: My Banshee looked a turn for the worse once I got back out of the subway at the Staunton Island station...)

Not that I'm aware of. But if you're the type of person who likes to forge ahead to do things out of order, then you'll have already done all you need to over there before unlocking Staunton anyways.

 

BTW, you might want to change your settings so that you can actually receive PM's before you PM somebody I've already posted on your behalf in the pinned sig thread in the Network forum. Just didn't know how else to inform you that you either have me blocked, everybody blocked, or have a full box. None of which are a good idea when PM'ing somebody for help

You can just drive through the tunnels from Staunton to SSV (they're open until you unlock Staunton, and then they're closed) .

Then if you are doin' mission on the second island and wanna get to the third easily,then try use a tank on the bridge(not a simple car),but use the "Flying Car"cheat,then done it!!

Do you mean BEFORE you go to Staunton? Once Staunton is unlocked, the tunnels between it and SSV become blocked.

Yes, thats exactly what I mean demarest by using the fly cheat "chittychittybb" to pass to stauton!

Well when I read "pass to Staunton", I hear Staunton unlocked. Simple misunderstanding.

 

As a side note, you don't need to cheat to get to Staunton early. Check out the video on my site.
