[email protected]
Hi all! I bought a few days ago GTA3 and ran now into a big problem ... my savegames won't load anymore. I tried all the fixes I could find in this forum but nothing helps. The problem started after I came to Staunton island. From time to time some missions didn't load, then I alt tabbed out of the game and back and the mission loaded. If I want to load now a savegame I just come to this screen ... ... and there it freezes. If I start a new game and save it, I can load it. But if I try to load a savegame from one day ago it won't. I'm running GTA3 on a P4 2.8GHz, ATI X800XTPE, Windows XP SP2, no background applications, free of mal/spyware and viruses. The only thing I did I copied the audio directory from the CD to the game directory as my CD drive makes so much noise when the cd is spinning. Thank you in advance for any help and/or advices!!! Ben
Are you sure you haven't changed anything else? I know that if you edit the main.scm file (in your GTA3\data folder) that old saves generally become incompatible (depending on exactly what you change). But from what you've described, I can't see why it won't work for you. My only 2 suggestions are to try deleting your gta3.set file (from your GTA3 User Files folder in My Documents) and see if that works. Or, as a last resort, reinstall - but put your audio straight onto your HD from the start and see if your saves will work then. Hopefully someone else will have some suggestions, but that's about all I can come up with - sorry. Good luck .
Demarest
reinstall - but put your audio straight onto your HD from the start and see if your saves will work then. Demarest wonders when the last time Ben installed GTA3 GTA3 was Though now that I think of it, I haven't installed it in years. But I do remember VC's copy audio option as being new. Anyways, you can't JUST copy the audio to the hard drive. From there, you'd need a no-CD EXE. Which was actually going to be my guess (different EXE). Though I was guessing you patched it needlessly. If you can start new games save and load, but can't load previous saves, then either your EXE or SCM have changed.

Sometime within the first 2 or 3 months of it being released - which would make it 2002 sometime I think (probably wrong though !) I wasn't sure if it'd work or not, but it was probably worth a try - I've got my audio on my HD, but that's only so I can copy it directly for LC (without having to get my GTA3 CD, which sits in a drawer 2 metres away from me ! Yeah, I know, I'm lazy). It was a last resort option after all . Oh, and I only installed it once - I copied it for RealGTA3 (see the 2 GTA3's in Dem's post). Demarest
Same here. To me, that's just smart modding. Nothing like a fresh canvas, eh
[email protected]
Anyways, you can't JUST copy the audio to the hard drive. From there, you'd need a no-CD EXE. Actually it worked without a No-CD patch (Vers. 1.1). When the game started it checked the CD (which I left in the drive) but during the game it took the music/radio stations from the hard drive (no cd spinning at least). It made the game play alot smoother without any stuttering if the music changed. I found this solution/fix/help also somewhere here in the forum. I will try tonight if I'm able to load the savegame from yesterday ... if yes, I have to start again which isn't that bad. If not I will come back to you guys. Thanks for all the replies for the moment.
Demarest
You just said the magic word. From the onset, my suspicion was a 1.1 EXE for 1.0 saves or vice versa. Restore your backup and you'll find your saves work just fine. Doing so, you'll also be able to ascertain whether or not the audio fix you mention there is a feature of the 1.1 EXE or not. I don't believe it is, but I could be wrong about that. Either way, it's good to learn of.
[email protected]
My savegames are loading again! To make it short: Deleting the gta.set file in the User Files folder did the trick. The long story: But before I deleted the file I deinstalled the game, cleaned the registry, installed it again. Tried to load a savegame with vers. 1.0 ... didn't work. Applied the 1.1 patch, tried again ... didn't work. Copied the Audio folder to the HD ... didn't work. And then I deleted the gta.set file Thanks to benisablink182fan for the tip and Demarest for the response. For now I have to go ... still alot to do in Liberty City. Make sure to check the Old Skool forum in a few weeks when I receive GTA and GTA2 from Amazon. I'm sure I will run again into a few problems.
