that's not a grille.. it's a too-low-res spoon radiator.. tounge.gif i've got that comment once before.. once i free up some more space on my tiny little tex, i should be able to improve it and a few other things..

user posted image

that's the bum..

i've got to fix the overly-bright edge of the brakelight tex.. or cut off that bit of the mesh..

Oh, and modelling cars to put in game is a hobby, unless you get paid, then it's a job.

But modelling cars to render is an art form, unless you get paid, then it's a job. But you'll get paid more than a game modeller, because it takes more skill.

not to be contradictory or anything, but all of that is relative.. the pay all depends on who's paying you, and your level.. the (professional) lead artist on any given commercial game might get paid better than some lameboy who lucked out and sells his (hobby) rendermodels to suckers who just like shiny smooth stuff.. you remember ragingpixels from deviantart, right? his favorite thing to do is brag about how he's sold some of his models.. and we know how good THOSE things are.. tounge2.gif

i model for games.. and i consider it art.. especially when i do concepts.. but at the same time, i realize if my concepts were smoothed like GR's i'd get tons more visual impact score.. the difficulty and skill is all in how well you do what you're supposed to be doing.. like the alfa GR and i did.. that car would fit in a game AND work well as a rendermobile.. and it would probably look just as nice in both situations provided the rendering was done well enough.. if some lame guy makes a "rendermobile" in zmod and it's just a gaggle of detached cubes and spheres with too many polys, it's going to look ass whether it's rendered OR in a game.. tounge2.gif and it still would technically be art too.. just not good art..

anywho.. my long ramble was just to re-state my point that the value of each medium is up to the interpretation of the people interested and their interests.. i think it's more rewarding to put cars ingame sometimes so i can play engineboy and tune stuff up with numbers.. and other times, it's fun to model cars just to stare at them for hours in renders/3D viewports..

It's been a while since we've had a good debate like this. Good to see some old players back in the field too.

Richard, give up. Stop trying to argue with people more experienced and far more knowledgeable than you, you just come off looking like an ass, and you'll probably get yourself banned.

59, I like the TA sketch but I'm not a fan of the 'teg bent plates. Or the color (it'd look bitchin in white). But since when have you listened to my advice tounge2.gif

wow.gif me wanty!

Kajun, with all due respect I'd have to disagree completely with you. I consider anyone that creates CAD-based designs an artist - and you can't compare artists, as their works and their skills form their individuality (and why they're an artist at all anyway). Everybody's different - I've seen plenty of crap renders and crap game models alike. Besides, the majority of us here do this as a hobby, rendering or not - some poeple need to take themselves a lot less seriously. Working with these 3D suites isn't easy, but it isn't f*cking rocket science. dozingoff.gif

SeaNorris.

@Picolini - He said it's for VCSA, which is why I did get there first on that one.

Anyhoo new old work in progress, been doing this on/off for nearly a year, but here it is, model by Sin:

Mangusta.

SN, convert's okay, way too dark though. And the rear wheels need to be ALOT beefier. Mangusta rear tyres remind me more of drag slicks than road tyres tounge.gif

Mmm I suppose it is, made it more brighter, oh and any ideas on how to do the back wheels? Anything I'm not aware of?

Personally, I think it's far more difficult to make 'rendermobile' than it is to make a car that goes into a game. Rendering is more of an art form than it is hobby. Modelling cars to put into a game however, is a hobby. You obviously think you're the bees knees at modelling without renders, but I'm going to bet my left testicle that someone who models for the sake of rendering the car could still model a better looking car than you, even if they didn't render the final result.

Oh, and modelling cars to put in game is a hobby, unless you get paid, then it's a job.

But modelling cars to render is an art form, unless you get paid, then it's a job. But you'll get paid more than a game modeller, because it takes more skill.

I never said anything about being the "bees knees" (?) of modeling. I know Im not the best or anywhere even close. Your right about someone making better looking cars (Game and Rendermobile)than me without having to have them rendered. So what? My point is that renders only help to enhance the final product with fancy shadows, reflections and highlights. A render is only a fancy souped up picture of the car. A model should look great and impress without a render.

I dunno how everyone else here feels, but I consider myself an artist, regardless what my cars are designed for. I put alot of time and effort into my models, and alot of time cheating polys to keep detail high and polycount low. Just that in itself is an artform I think. And the fact I don't use any type of blueprints makes it even moreso of an art.

it's been white before.. i had it white with different wheels in some in-progress pics from when i first put on the new lip that i didnt post here i like the midori green (from an EK civic) beter because i dont have to fight with it to keep it shaded like i would have to with white.. this color would probably look better if i really got it totally right..

If your talking about the tires I have no idea, Im pretty sure those rims are standard for the car though.

@TRN4L Looking good, nice to see you modeling cars again:P

Wow, TRN4L, sweet looking car, didn't know you did cars as well.

Sadly, I can either modle low-poly cars or ones that need to be meshsmoothed.

I'm making a Ferrari Enzo all, stay tuned for it. Only for render purposes though.

And a question. All the black seams on cars, do you model them or use a texture for them?

Since you're modeling for a render I would suggest modeling the seams, it'll look much better. Not to mention save you all the mapping time.

For small panel lines you could probably use a texture and pull it off, but it might throw off the look if the textures don't look close enough to the real seam lines.

the seems like a good model, but quality in some areas (like the texture/barebone interior) doesn't do it justice tounge.gif

@TNT: you can texture them/model them or make gaps between doors and body to that effect~ all up to you and the style/aim your going for tounge.gif

personally I'd much rather model/gap the seams tounge2.gif

A badly converted car? That's what it started out like so theres really no point trying to say I was to blame for it bored.gif

There is no texture on the interior, yet.

I see potential in that car SeaNorris, like irloading said, the model is fairly decent its just the low res textures that are letting it down on the exterior. Just heavily tint the windows.. who needs interiors anyway tounge.gif

Looking good tjone, what kind of car is that?

Flashg, that model looks very clean. would you happen to have a wireframe lying around?

Sylviana, that looks like a good start.
