Mainland Marauder
Yeah, Beltran's fielding is still pretty good though and, he can still steal alot of bases. True, but that in itself just makes him a 21st-century Vince Coleman for the Mets. He got the big bucks for the big stick he was supposed to be swinging at Shea. You know who else is on a tear right now? Jim Thome, with the ChiSox. Really, I thought after last year that this guy's career was nearing an end. But he's hit six homers already this year and is just punishing the baseball. He apparently has a future yet, and at 35, 500 career HR's is a probability. Maybe even 600+. Huitzilopochtli
My Giants beat the Dodgers last night in a 2-1 victory. Good pitching for both teams, until the Ray Durham had a sac fly to take the lead in the 9th. We got Schmidt pitching tonight, hopefully the Giants can extent their lead in the NL West tonight. B Rob
I have no clue to why the Angels are struggling. They have speed, offense, decent starting rotation, and a quality closer. Sniper.
Well the Angels won today 9-3 and their record is now 6-6. They are also in first in the AL West. So to me they aren't really struggling. Anyone see Pujols blast three homers today to help the Cardinals beat the Reds 8-7? Pujols is an awesome player. Edited April 17, 2006 by Sniper. So to me they aren't really struggling. Anyone see Pujols blast three homers today to help the Cardinals beat the Reds 8-7? Pujols is an awesome player. That just means the whole division is struggling. Not that the Angels are playing well. And yes, I saw the 3 homers hit by Pujols. From what I can see, New Busch is a pretty nice place for the long ball. I still cannot figure out who is the better player, D-Lee or Pujols. ESPN.com asked in a poll, 'Other than Albert Pujols, which first baseman would you build your team around?', and Derrek Lee won by a landslide in all states, besides Detroit and Colorado, who picked Chris Shelton and Todd Helton, respectively. But I'm not sure why they don't compare Derrek Lee and Albert Pujols directly to each other. They are almost the same exact player, D-Lee having slightly better defense and speed, but Pujols is younger, and has been putting up the same numbers over a longer period of time. It is a toss-up. Mainland Marauder
I'd take Pujols, no contest. High average, power, plate discipline and some good speed for a first baseman, perhaps the best in the National League at that position since Jeff Bagwell in his prime (he's the only 1B in big league history with 400+ homers and 200+ steals). His defense is not great, but I'd say it's above big league average if only because of the trend of putting weak fielders at first in exchange for their power hitting. B Rob
Pujols is great no doubt but, D-Lee is just as good. He was in the top 3 in the NL in HR's and RBI's. The Cub's don't get many guys on base so D-Lee having alot of RBI's is real good. Both got great leadership and a great attitude and play good defense. This leads me to the last stat. Clutch! Besides D. Ortiz of Boston Pujols is the best Clutch hitter in the game. D-Lee has struggled in that department somewhat and for that reason I'm taking Pujols over D-Lee Pujols>D-Lee. Have you seen any Cubs games this year? Have you seen any Cubs games the past 3 years? Or the 2003 NL Championship Series where Derrek Lee crushed the Cubs, and then went on and had a great World Series as well? D-Lee is clutch. Mainland Marauder
Runey, you left out the Cardinals who are 8-5 in the NL Central. Just pointing that out because I myself have nothing better to do They're the team I'm watching in the Central. 'Stros in first place. I know it's too early to get excited, but wins in April count as much as wins in September. Hope they can keep it up. Captain Keyes
'Stros in first place. I know it's too early to get excited, but wins in April count as much as wins in September. Hope they can keep it up. It's nice to see nearly the entire lineup including Ausmus and Everett on fire right now, especially in contrast to last year. Now if only Preston Wilson would stop whiffing every single f*cking at-bat, the offense would be downright dangerous. The bullpen needs to settle down though. I'm sure it'll happen eventually, because they're going to need to compensate when the offense goes cold, and that's bound to happen sooner or later. Mainland Marauder
Very true. As long as the run support's there, you can deal with a little erratic bullpen performance. It's better than last year when you had Eric Bruntlett, Raul Chavez and the pitchers at the bottom of the lineup combining to hit a buck and change, to now where everyone's contributing. Ausmus isn't quite as good defensively, throwing out base stealers and such, so seeing him pick up where he left off last year (i.e. being a non-liability at the plate for a change) is quite welcome. Everett can be a solid at-bat when he doesn't swing at every pitch. Since Berkman is hitting the ball well, and Wilson was signed to swing away and attack the Crawford Boxes, I can deal with his K's. He never had much plate discipline anywhere else he's been, so we knew what to expect. B Rob
Im a little suprised about the Rockies. If it's hard to say if the Astros are good this early in the season, it's probably harder to say if the Reds are actually going to seriously challenge this season. Of course they may surprise us all and win the division, but I don't think many people are counting on that. B Rob
The Reds are doing decent right now and they've played some good teams already. If the injury bug dosen't hit the Reds and if thier bats keep up they could be in the race all season. They won today 9-8 against the Marlins. Mainland Marauder
It's been discussed before in this topic - the Reds don't have the pitching to hang in there for the long haul. They need some ground-ball pitchers to try and keep it in the ballpark. If Dunn goes down again, you can really forget about Cincinnati as far as contendership goes. The Rockies - same thing. Trying to outslug your opposition only gets you so far. They benefit from the NL West being generally weak.
