Indians are looking real good too. They just beat Santana today 3-2. Thats 5 wins in a row. Those pesky Tigers are still undeafeted though.

Barry Zito took a pounding too against the Yankees on opening night.

Whats with Zito? Just a bad start is or he just bad right now? Oakland's pitching was good at the end of last season even after the loss of Hudson and Mulder. Harden, and Haren really stepped up last year. Now they could use a bullpen

Being a starting pitcher for a ballclub that doesn't have that good of a lineup or bullpen is never easy.

The A's reverting back to the small-market franchise mentality has brought them back to the lower half of the American League. That's pretty much all there is to it.

Derek Jeter hit a game-winning homerun for the Yankees. When the Yankees are struggling who always gets them out? DJ?

Jee-tah! Jee-tah!

What happened to this topic. Did people quit becoming baseball fans?

We're a week in, and Lance Berkman and Preston Wilson both tied for the NL lead in homers with Albert Pujols. Go ahead, chalk it up to the ballpark. But....go 'Stros.

Here's a little song for Ba'Roid Bonds. Guess which tune it goes to:

Juice me up at the ballgame

Juice me up with steroids

I've got a vial in my pine tar rag

Grab a syringe and jab it in my back

And we'll shoot, shoot, shoot in the clubhouse

If you're not juiced it's a shame

'Cause it's one, two, three shots

You're pumped

It's a new ballgame

All right everybody, sing along with me now!

Juice me up at the ballgame

Juice me up 'til we're caught

I'll tell Congress that my stats are clean

If they ask then I'll tell everything

'Cause I'll rat, rat, rat out my teammates*

Don't care if they get the blame

'Cause it's one, two, three strikes

You're out**

At the old ballgame!

*Jose Canseco only

**(for life)

Save history. Bench Bonds.

Awesome f*cking game last night. The perfect example of why the Angels are a strong contender.

Jeff Weaver sucked though. He let three runs go, and wasn't really bringing the heat. Then when the Angels were down by one in the bottom of the 9th, with two men on 1st and 2nd. Adam Kennedy knocks one into the corner of right field. One runner came in, and Texas' firstbaseman drops the ball and sends pinch runner Maicer Izturis guns it and scores the winning run.

It sucks because I left the game in the 7th before the runs started coming in.

@gta_player5: It's original, with a little inspiration from a piece in an old MAD magazine, circa the Darryl Strawberry/Dwight Gooden/Keith Hernandez cocaine-in-baseball craze.

@darth: As long as the Angels are hitting the ball, it doesn't matter how bad the pitching sucks. The Angels will contend in the AL West.

And to correct...I read in my Around The Majors email report that both Adam Dunn and Khalil Greene hit two homers last night to join a five-way tie for the league HR lead.

Argh... Astros-Giants rained out AGAIN. I bet this is wreaking havoc on the starting pitchers' routines.

I knew Cleveland would be tough this year. Travis Hafner is looking great, and the pitching's holding up. Isn't Sabathia still hurt?

Yeah. He should only miss one more start though.

Astros and Giants finally got to play and got in a doubleheader; they split.

Moises Alou hit his 300th homer for the Giants against his former team, and Lance Berkman went yard from both sides of the plate in the same game for the first time in his career. He's now at six homers for the outright National League lead, and is on to a great start. I hope he stays healthy and jacks out 50 this year. He's a great ballplayer and a great guy.

In some not-so-good 'Stros news, hometown favorite Brandon Backe left his start in San Francisco in the second inning with an arm injury. He's headed back to Houston for further examination, which means it's probably significant. He too is off to a good start, and without Clemens, Houston really needs him. Here's hoping it's not too serious.

The Indians did what every struggling team should do. When I say struggling I mean like Tampa Bay struggling biggrin.gif They blew up the team were bad for a few but now they have a great group of young players like Travis Hafner, Grady Sizemore, CC Sabathia, Johnny Peralta. They stopped trying to make big deals and try to sign top players and focused on the young players. They have a good cast of players now and the best part is they're all pretty young so they can be with them for some time.

Translation: John Hart left Cleveland and slowly the Indians finally came around to actually putting together a winning combination rather than just lumping a bunch of talented players together without regard to chemistry.

You might notice the Rangers have been in the same rut the Indians were under Hart's watch. Remember when he arrived in Texas, it was his idea to sign both Carl Everett and John Rocker.

I agree, the Indians are a playoff threat. The Mets are looking good so far too. They just swept the Nationals on the road and are 7-1.

I suppose the question is whether the Mets can stay strong down the stretch for a change.

The Mets will eventually break down and their Achillies heel will be their bullpen. They have no depth in the bull pen, they have nobody to set up Wagner. You're not going to have him pitch 2 innings every game are you? Aaron Heilman is currently their st up man, I know what you're saying right now "Who? Aaron Heilman?"

Who? Aaron Heilman?

Without a bullpen you can't stay around the top for very long. Look at the otherwise-great Seattle Mariners teams of the 1990's Randy Johnson/Ken Griffey Jr. era and observe how the lack of a competent bullpen cost them down the stretch. Your starting pitchers can't throw complete games all the time.

On the other hand, look what a bullpen can do for a team like the Astros, which has had erratic run support but a solid middle relief and set-up staff (Chad Qualls, Dan Wheeler) to get between Oswalt, Pettitte etc. and Brad Lidge.

Billy Wagner's stuff isn't varied enough to constantly trot out there for two innings. He's not much different than what he was in Houston - dead heat; guess the location, time your swing and you're going to hit him hard. He never had a breaking ball as effective as Lidge's slider to go with the 100+mph fastball. Lidge for the win biggrin.gif Yes, he struggled in the postseason last year, but I think it was from overusing the slider and he got predictable. It wasn't what we saw all through the regular season when he was mowing people down.

The Mets offense is real good but thier starting pitching and bullpen is very shaky. The Mets can't count on Pedro to get all thier wins. Some of the other starting pitchers are going to have to step up and pitch well too. T. Glavine, V. Zambrano, B.Bannister. The Mets offense has to contniue to hit well and blow teams out cause if it comes to thier bullpen they will give up games. Staying on the topic of the Mets, they are currently 4-2 bottom of the 7th.

The Mets worst move in the offseason was undoubtably getting rid of Jay Seo, they got Jorge Julio for him....I know again "Who? Jorge Julio?" biggrin.gif

I'd rank that ahead of plunking down the big bucks for Carlos Beltran, who hasn't really shown the Mets he's worth the money the Astros refused to pay him.

Yeah I wouldn't have payed that much for Beltran either but, hey at least he didn't go to the Yankees. That one year he played for the Astros he did real well and then when he got to the Mets he's struggled. I dunno why, maybe tougher pitchers in that division, or tougher ballpark to hit in.

Well, Shea Stadium is not a good park to hit in and it's definitely not as hitter-friendly as Houston's, but Beltran played at Kauffman Stadium before that and that's never been a great hitters' park either. Maybe Scott Bore-us got him his big paycheck and he's just going through the motions to bring it in.

It could also have to do with the division he now plays in and the unbalanced schedule. The NL Central parks are generally hitter-friendly (Minute Maid, Great American Ballpark, Wrigley) while the East has Shea and Dolphins Stadium which favor pitchers.

Yeah, Beltran's fielding is still pretty good though and, he can still steal alot of bases.
