~Giggle~
Now with my new Canon Powershot A610 I got for my brithday I need a new memory card. I already have a 128 MB one but I want a Gigabyte one. I was looking on Crucial and found this card for £34. Now that's all very well but I was looking on Amazon and I found this for about £28 and free delivery. So are they basically the same card but with different labelling? And are they both guaranteed to fit my camera? I could easily get the one from Crucial but I would rather save the £6 if possible.
Demarest
Both are 1 GB SD cards. Only the branding is different. Memory isn't something I'd skimp on. I'm not a Crucial fanboy, but I recognize the name whereas Viking, I've never heard of. A one time expense of 6 more pounds on something that's going to last "forever" in a device that is going to be used to capture moments to remember to me seems worth the sacrifice. You'll want it to be reliable and dependable and the branding would suggest it's more assured to do so. And if not, that you'll be backed up by a larger company more capable of dealing with such things. ^ my 2 cents
Edwards
Basically any SD card will work in your A610. Dem has the right idea with going with a good brand, but you want to go with a good flash memory maker, not a PC memory maker. For a Canon camera, the best maker is supposedly Sandisk* - they're pretty much guaranteed to work perfectly and quickly. A quick check on amazon reveals their basic 1GB SD card for 30 pounds, and an Ultra II card for 48. The Ultra II cards are faster (and the Extreme III cards are even faster), but I wouldn't be surprised if your cam couldn't take advantage of the extra speed. I use a 2GB Ultra II compactflash card (along with carrying my old 512MB Ultra II, just in case) with my Canon Digital Rebel XT (which is a DSLR cam that'll take 3 8MB shots per second in continuous mode, so I can really tell if my CF card isn't fast enough). *I'm no fanboy. If you're using a Nikon cam, use Lexar media. If you're using something else, I can't remember. ~Giggle~
Thanks to both of you for your detailed replies. Edwards, where did you see this card? The only one I saw was a 1GB MMC card, not an SD card.
Edwards
I just did two searches on amazon.co.uk for "sandisk 1GB SD" and "sandisk 1GB secure digital". The basic card was here, The Ultra II card I found may have been this one, but that's not quite amazon. sysnode.org
