The-end
Ok so ive been using a 512kbs service and i have been gettign a max of around 55-60kbs (depending on sites) and one day it just started going at 90-100kbs for no reason, but by the next day it was back at 55-60kbs. Im just wondering how bad is my net capped off and is there any way to make it download at 90-100kbs again? Because it's quite a big improovement on things. I am using a speedtouch 330 usb modem (provided frree by isp) could they off somehow capped the speed going through it?
Axis.
You're connection speed is divided by 10 for download speed. 512 divided by 10 is 51. So you're gonna get around 50-60kbps yes. You got 90-100 because the server you were downloading from was good/near. I have 1mbps so it's gonna download at 100kbps average from uncapped servers. Get it? Wolf68k
It's not divided by 10. By your logic my ISP being 5mbps I shouldonly be getting 500kByte/sec and yet I get 612kByte/sec and it is not a burst speed or because they are near by or because the server is good or has a fat pipe to send files. 512kbit/sec = around 62kbyte/sec. The 90-100kbyte/sec you seeing might be a burst speed reading or because your ISP, that being DSL, might have been doing some maintenance to their network that could cause it. Now those numbers I listed are the math talking, however in a network you have what's called 'overhead' which slows it down a bit. The funny thing is is that's a lot like HDD space. The lower the HDD advertized size the closer it is to what you'd expect. For example; a 30GB HDD comes out to be 27GB or there abouts. While a 200GB HDD comes out to be 189GB. So a 512kbit equals 62kbyte but with the overhead it's closer to 60kbyte 1Mbit = 122Kbyte but you should be seeing around 115kbyte
The-end
Ok thanks guys so if i get a 3mbs connection i would gt around 300kbs? millermagic
If you are downloading a large file from a server that can only do 8kbps up, you're not going to get more than 8kbps nomatter how fast your connection is.

The-end
That site told me this Your connection is: 565 Kbps (about 0.6 Mbps) You downloaded at: 69 kB/s Your TRuSPEED: 605 Kbps :: 74 kB/s (7% overhead factored) Edited February 23, 2006 by The-end

I prefer Broadband Reports (aka dslreports.com) speed test http://www.dslreports.com/stest Because as the DL test goes on the packets get bigger and bigger but only until it sees you're taking too long to get the packet. For example if on the 1.5MB packet, if you take too long to get it then they stop there. Other wise they go on to the 2.9MB packet, maybe 5.8MB, then 8.8MB. Then they do the upload test. With that site, I looked at it, you have to pick upload or download test, then you have to pick the packet size to test. The only thing to worry about with DSLReports' test is that you pick the right server. There are some on there that for me must be going through a lot of extra hops to get to it because my results from them are pretty low. Like the MegaPath test I can never get the 8.8MB test, only the 2.9MB, but the Speakeasy I can.
Jack_Knife
Just because I don't think anyone has actually said it, your connection speed is measured in kilobits per second. Your download speeds are measured in kilobytes per second. There are 8 bits in a byte, therefore your download speed is your connection speed divided by 8. "You can play faster than Al Di Meola and do it with only one pinky, but if you're not listening to what is going on around you, you might as well just shut up" isn't your croth suppose to be erecting when you have an orgasm?
