k-highway
Hey Staff. What's up? Look, I'm having a little problem receiving my PMs. Back in october I used to receive this little pop-up notifying me PMs. That little pop-up is enabled, but it never works. Can someone help? Appreciate it.
Justin
Happens to me, too. But it's no problem, I just get the notification and then click the 1 New Messages link under the 'Logged in as: Fuzzy Juzzy' thinkgo at the top. Methinks it's something to do with Firefox disabling popups opening new windows. Or Adblock, or something along those lines. I'm sure you could configure FF or Adblock to allow them from gtaforums.com, but it's not a huge issue for me at the moment so I haven't been bothered to do anything about it. It's not a problem with GTAF itself though. Certainly to do with disabled popups at your end.

Svip
@Fuzzy Juzzy; Wrong! Javascript Alerts are not considered popups. They are alerts. Completely different story, no, it has nothing to do with Firefox blocking popups or Adblock (however that got into the picture). It is a simple manner of errors in the scripting of the Javascript on the site, I believe through updates of the board software the javascript had changed and had outputted errors. However, you can help us solve the problem, if you go to Tools > Javascript Console and copy paste those errors you got from GTAForums.com when Firefox failed to execute the Javascript as intended, we can fight the errors of the script and solve it again. If that is something you want, of course.

Svip
Just to mention it, I just had a PM and I got the Javascript Alert. For the record, I am not using Adblock on this box, and I am using Firefox 1.5 for Linux (yes, there are differences).
pdescobar
Sorry 'bout that, I was positive it had something to do with Adblock. It used to work for me on both FF and IE, if I recall correctly. I always figured it was something to do with making the switch to/updating FF and installing Adblock. I'd like to note I installed FF 1.5.0.1 (on Windows 98 SE; yes, the PC is that old) recently as well as Adblock and my PM alert notices work just fine. I also installed the extension Noscript which would probably block the alerts if I hadn't whitelisted GTAF. EDIT: actually, my post is probably not too helpful. I just realized GTAF is currently whitelisted on Adblock too because it was making browsing the forum intolerably slow on this old dog of a machine and I don't know if I received any PMs when it wasn't whitelisted. Justin
Just to mention it, I just had a PM and I got the Javascript Alert. You're confusing me! Say I get a PM. I get the popup saying 'You have received a new Private Message' (or whatever it is), and then upon clicking 'OK' I get the 'Would you like to open it in a new window' prompt, and if I click 'yes', nothing happens - exactly as would occur had I clicked 'no'. I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say 'Javascript Alert' (I know nothing about all this techno terminology), but logically I'd assume that means the popup. In which case, that's not the problem at hand. [EDIT] OK, I just re-read the original post and I think I've probably interpreted it wrong. My problem is apparently different to k-highway's. I believe he doesn't get the popup at all. My mistake. ..... On my old machine I have an earlier version of Firefox (without any extensions whatsoever). I believe it's FF v1.07, but I can't recall 100% off-hand. Anyway, the popup and the opening in a new window function work perfectly on that. So have we narrowed it down to a problem with Firefox or an extension, or have we got nowhere?
Svip
Chances are the Javascript is getting old. Oh and for the reminder, I actually clicked cancel when the Alert appeared. :\
pdescobar
Say I get a PM. In your case, that may be a firefox problem or a firefox configuration. Go to Tools -> Options and if you have "Block Popups" checked, click on "allowed sites" and look at the list. I have www.gtaforums.com on that whitelist and choosing "Yes" on the "Open New Window?" dialog works properly -- it opens up in a new tab as I want it to. However, if I remove www.gtaforums.com from the popup whitelist, then choosing "Yes" results in Firefox blocking the new window/tab and the inbox doesn't open. If you block popups, whitelist gtaforums and send yourself a PM and see if it works properly. I agree with your (unquoted) edit that k-highway's problem sounds different where the initial notification alert never shows up and that could be javascript being completely disabled, the javascript not executing properly because of errors, or some other related browser issue. k-highway
Ok. So now can someone tell me what to do?
pdescobar
Ok. So now can someone tell me what to do? As a start, you could tell us what web browser you use (name and version), what Operating System, and how your browser is configured with regard to processing javascript...
