Forfit Posted February 18, 2006 Share Posted February 18, 2006 What you have to do is buy a Router and then that hooks up to your current computer, all you do is plug the cable you have right now into the back of that, and then with a new cable it goes from the Router to the ethernet card in the computer. Next you get your Network Adapter and that will plug into your new computer, you install the software if it comes with it and then you connect to the internet and start surfing! I think thats all you need. I just posted those Belkin Components because they are what i'm used too and that's what i have in my home network. I recommend anything that is "802.11G" because the computers can talk to eachother at 54MBPS instead of 11MBPS, so you can transfer files quicker. Bond996 Posted February 18, 2006 Share Posted February 18, 2006 My personal reccomendation is to get a Linksys WRT54G(L). The non-L is about 30-40 in stores, and the L is like 50-60 online. Both are excellent, and I would prefer the L over the non. Then, for about $20 on somewehre like newegg, or even on a good sunday, you can get a PCI card for your current computer to do wireless. DO NOT BUY A USB ADAPTER. They suck ass, completely and totally. Make sure to get a PCI card. I like ones based on the Ralink RT2500 chipset, like the Foxconn WLL-3350, which can be found on newegg. However, anything will really work. It is also advisable to run Windows XP SP2 for wireless, as SP1 doesn't work too well for it. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Like Luke and Bond said, Linksys probably is better, because i have had very bad luck with my Belkin setup anyways. My USB Adapter works fine, but we've been through about 2 or 3 routers. And in my sisters computer she has a PCI Card like Bond stated. One of those probably would be better, and all that shows is a little antenna in the back instead of what mine is which is a ghetto square box with a wire sitting on my case. Are the PCI cards relatively simple to install, and is it just a matter of screwing them into the case and connecting them? I've never worked on the inside of a computer before to be honest. And would installing a PCI card possibly void any type of warranty with a manufactured computer, such as an HP? PCI cards are pretty easy to install. You just need to open the case, unscrew a bay cover, and push it into the socket, then screw it in. HP has instructions on how to install them if you check out their site.
