SmellyJelly
Ok, my brother wants ram for $50. Right now I have 1GB, but my motherboard instructions say not to go over 1.5. Is that just a warning with all motherboards, one that I can ignore? MOTHERBOARD (sorry no link) VNF4 Zenith Value Edition NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra chipset CHAINTECH Heres the ram that I'm using now. http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16820145440 I found ram that should match mine using power search on newegg. Here it is. Do you think it will make any improvement in games? Also does it match up well? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820145026
|Zephyr|
Righto first of all, does your motheboard have more than 2 ram slots. I see you are currently using 2 X 512 so to buy another 512 you will obviously need another ram slot. What is the make and model of your motherboard? The ram that you are looking at buying does match the ram you already have so shouldn't be any trouble there. I'm not sure about the warning not to go over 1.5GB ram, never seen it before. EDIT: sorry didnt read where you said the make of your motherboard. I see you have 4 slots for ram, so it should be fine. Don't worry about the warning if you look at the site below and scroll down to specifications, you will see that you can have up to 4GB of ram (4 X 1GB). You might want to look and see how much a 1GB of corsair ram is, might be better in the long run with upgrading etc. http://www.mbreview.com/vnf4ze.php Edited February 18, 2006 by |Zephyr|
SmellyJelly
Yea, my motherboard has 4 ram slots. All the information is included in my first post.
Wolf68k
Where in your manual does it say don't go over 1.5GB of RAM? I've read the web site and 2 of the manuals for Chaintech VNF4 Ultra ZENITH VE and they make no mention of how much RAM each slot can support and that the max of the board is 4GB. I would assume that based on the fact that the max board is 4GB then the max per slot is 1GB. As for your choice of RAM, good luck, but yeah that stick should work and go with the other 2. Keep in mind that if you have the 2 stick now in slots where they are running dual-channel, more than likely say good-bye to that it'll be back to single-channel. This is odd though... Due to CPU specifications limitation, two DDR400 memory modules inserted into DIMM1/3, three DDR400 into DIMM1/2/3, or four DDR400 into DIMM1/2/3/4 is not recommended. That is the dumbest damn thing I've ever read. You can put ram in slots 1/2 and 3/4 and 2/3/4 but not 1/2/3/4 and yet it has a 4GB max. In that case it might be2GB max per slot because I can't see how else they would approve of 4GB max on the board. I do want to thank you for one thing, you and alienant, and that is to stay the hell away from Chaintech. They might make nice mobo but they will confuse the ever living crap out of you to make sense of their manual. Let's not forget the fact they leave out "little details" like max RAM per slot...hell why tell people that, let them figure out on their own. SmellyJelly
Yea, that's what I read. Why would they even bother putting in the extra slot if your not supposed to use it? The only reason I can think of is the the slot is just for show. Back to the ram, would it still be better running 1.5gb in single-channel vs 1gb in dual-channel? Dup
Stick to 2 slots using a matched pair. The A64 memory controller (which is on the processor itself) will not support more than 2 slots at full 400MHz, and if you get it to, it could be unstable. I had 4x 512 PC3200XL Corsair sticks and my system was just awful compared to just having the two in there. Id leave your system as it is at the moment an invest in a better motherboard and RAM combination to see any decent performance gain.
SmellyJelly
Ok, I'll tell my brother not to get ram then. Thanks you the help you guys.
Wolf68k
That depends on what he's doing with the system. Video/graphics editting or playing RAM hungry games like BF2 or FEAR, then get the other stick and just besure to use slots 2/3/4. If he just wants it because he thinks it'll improve performance, then forget it. Save up and get a 2GB (2x1GB) twin pack. $150 for a Corsair VauleSelect kit like that.
