I stumbled accross this earlier today.

It's a thread by a girl who was taken off her R1, albeing at not great speed, by a Civic driver who managed to spin his car out (again at no great speed) and take her off her bike.

Her thread with links to her helmet cam video

There was nothing aparently wrong with her, the American women at the scene seemed quite knowledgable about what to do, which restored a bit of faith about the US to me, as over here many will just drive away and theres never really a croud. She was in a bit of shock though.

The Civic driver knew she had the cam, hes the guy in the white t-shirt to the right on the shots towards the end. But he still said "she hit him" and that he wasn't moving. What a prick.

My thoughts are though:

A: How the f*ck can you sping out at like 40mph on a highway?! I've never seen it and probably never will unless its black ice or lots of standing water on the road. Even if he slammed his brakes on, going full 180 is retarded! All you need to do is get off the brakes, and steer into it. You might go out of control but not be facing the wrong damn way, esp in an FF civic.

B: How can he be so dumb enough to even attpempt to shift the blame?! He is very lucky she had a gut feeling and backed off the throttle. She could still have taken a few broken bones, esp if she didn't get time to brake at all and went over the car alongside her.

I'd never lie about an accident. Well in the UK it's very difficult to cover up your're lying unless you've got some people who swear they saw what happened. There were at least 4/5 people there who would have seen it and the police would have teken details of being there at least.

What a f*ckup, just HOW did that Tw*t manage it? I've never seen an ABS car do that either... And I'm SURE those Civics have ABS...

Anyway, what a Tw*t, hehe... It does seem to defy physics, but then again, stupidy knows no barrier.

Ouch. That could've ended up much, much worse. I had something similar happen to me while going down a steep road on my pushbike, a car going in the opposite direction cut across into my lane while going around a blind corner and I slammed into his quarter panel at I estimate about 50kph. The sheer momentum sent me flying through the air for a good 30 meters before I landed practicly on the doorstep of a nearby house.

Just saw the video. I don't know what to say, why would you do that lol. Thats what driving school is for i guess.

The girl in the black shirt didn't look too bad ph34r.gif

I'm also stumped at how the civic completly turned around. My friend pulled the handbrake on his accord while going faster than that on a gravel road, it went in a straight line.

I wrecked a dirtbike when I was younger. Me and a few friends were riding a dirtbike and a quad down a hill when my buddy, David, hit a patch of ice on his quad and spun around facing me. I as only going 20-30mph (35-50kmh) when I hit him but it was still enough for me to break my collar bone when I flew over his quad and hit the ground.

Fus stuff.

I have seen worse on the roads around my house. A guy pulled out onto the road on a harley near my moms at 4am and was t-boned by a car. He died. The blood was stained on the road for a few days.

But, yeah, she is lucky. That guy is about as stupid as the Viper in that video I made a topic about.

Make me scraed that my dad's thinking of buying a BMW R1200ST... The R1100RS is fast and scary enough for it's size... Nice bike though, fast AND you can get your shopping on it smile.gif Can take real beating, it's been knocked over so many times by sh*tty parking jobs...

But yeah, passenger is NOT fun.

Holy sh*t.

How much for one of those helmet cams?

Those kind of things aren't cheap, but as you can see they can become very useful!

A lot of bikers in the US I see don't wear anything but a helmet in ways of protective gear. Thats at least what I see on all those "stunt + crash videos" that are all over the net, plus I have a friend in California.

It takes something like 3.2 seconds to get from skin to bone at 30mph when only wearing a pair of jeans.

Shes really lucky she's wearing full protective gear. No matter how hot it is or how little distance you're going, don't hold back on the protective stuff.

If the imapct dosen't kill you, its the skating down the road on your arse without nothing to slow you down. The key is to roll yourself to stop the leathers burning through.

Bikes are great, you can see a lot more your sat higher up and you get some great kicks from opening up the throttle and disappearing into thin air. You learn to anticipate things much sooner, but as seen on that video, somethings are just unavoidable and you just cannot anticipate it.

I know what you mean. When I get my bike in May, I'm getting at least $400-500 worth of protective gear (already got a helmet). It's like buying a rifle and then putting a Walmart scope on it. tounge.gif

Doesn't matter if its 90 degrees outside, I'm going to be armored up.

I'm also stumped at how the civic completly turned around. My friend pulled the handbrake on his accord while going faster than that on a gravel road, it went in a straight line.

It's a common misconception about front wheel drive, if you brake while steering (ABS or not) you shift the cars weight onto the front wheels and the back loses grip.

I use this in my Civic typeR all the time to set up slides for roundabouts and corners.

Sounds like the guy may have hit the anchors and swerved at the same time.

My friend also has a written off typeR due to braking half way through a corner creating pretty much the same scenario.

Letting power off while blasting into a corner again has the same effect, the shorter the cars wheelbase the worse the effect. Mini's and Fiesta XR2 are legendary for doing it, good fun if you can control it though. biggrin.gif

Oh, really? What kind of bike are you getting? Is it your first?

I'm allowed to take my full license test in April, when I'm moving to a Suzuki Bandit 600. Should be pretty rad, with the Summer weather and all.

I'm taking my license course/test on a Buell Blast, but I'm purchasing a Kawasaki Ninja 500 EX. It was a decision between the Ninja and a SV650S, and I chose the Ninja based on price and availability. It'll be my first bike. smile.gif

Really? I only have to take my test on a little Honda 125. I guess you're doing the equivalent of our "Direct Access" scheme, where you can ride an unrestricted bike once you've reached a certain age if you do the course and test on a bigger bike. Ninjas are great bikes, from what I've seen and heard. Especially for a first bike.

Do you have to take a theory test over there? I took mine today, was fairly easy. Passed, obviously. tounge.gif

Yeah, the course I'm taking is the beginner's bike course, but you've got to be 18 to take it. If you pass, you get your license. I personally think that's crazy, but it's easier than hiring an instructor to learn riding.

A theory test? I guess you mean a written test regarding proper motorcycle technique. (Theory test sounds cooler than permit test) I took that in August, passed with a 97%. biggrin.gif

I've been putting off getting my license for far too long.

Ah, then it's similar. Have you ever ridden before? If not, it is pretty crazy that they just give you the license so easily. I have to ride my 50cc dirt bike on the road until I'm 17 in April, then it's just a two day course with a test at the end. Pretty difficult to pass, I've heard.

Well, similar. It's a bit of technique, highway code, etc. in a multiple-choice test, then a "hazard perception" section, which is comprised of 14 1 minute long videos. You have to click a mouse when you see a developing hazard.

Holy sh*t. What the f*ck did that guy do? All I can see there is he just locked up and spun out of control. Then that asshole tried to shift the blame, ugh... None the less, those helmet cams are wonderful things. So it's just a helmet with a small camera on the side? Speaking of bikes, I hate being a passenger on one. I don't feel safe on one, and i'm not in control. I hate being on the back of something that can be that unsafe, and not being able to do anything when it crashes.

Myself, i've ridden a 70cc semi auto and a 100cc manual. Both hondas, ripping good fun! biggrin.gif

When I had my bike, I took into the garage which was a some distance away from where I live.

They were all rough as f*ck bikers, so thats why I took it there. I knew my baby would be looked after.

They needed to keep it in as I'd f*cked it up good and proper so one of the lads gave me a life home on the back of his ZX12R.

I'd never met this guy, never mind seen him ride. I was fine with the ride, rode pretty much like me leaving a wake of destruction behind him. I got a peak of the speedo while we were blasting down this hill. Now, this hill wasn't your average highway type hill, or even an "A" road. It was a sceneic type of hill with bumps, drops and the road surfaces are usually convex a little for water drainage. Basically you feel totally out of control as you hit one thing after the next and the bike rattles around bouncing off the bumps. It makes me ease off in the car, and on the bike I took it easy.

Well, the speedo read out a 3 figure sum on the upside of 150mph and was climbing very rapidly on just that glance I saw before he piled on the front brake before taking the next corner.

At this point, just knowing the speed I started to pull myself into the "seat" with the grab handles eather side. I'm not an easy person to scare, esp on the road as I have a great sense of perception. Being sat on the back of that bike knowing that speed without being able to see anything in front really gave me the heebie jeebies. Only at that point did I feel like I was gonna fall off the back.

He was a great rider though, he had his knee down on most corners even with me on the back! I think he was taking advantage of the extra weight over the back wheel.

When I went back for my bike the lads were all "So, you're still alive and not in hospital!". Aparently he was renouned for "losing" his pillion and nobody would get on the bike with him! Quite frankly, I was happy for the experience. The guys were suprised I could even get on a bike with a bald power ranger. They were all black leather and a pair of jeans type of guys. They still had 1000CC superbikes though. None of that chopper bollocks.

I'm after another bike but I need to redo my test blush.gif But then at least commuting will be a little cheaper and a lot lot more fun. It's a shame there isn't the room to open a real bike open on the road these days. Police... pffft

Was that the DNA you parked in the side of a car? Also, how did he have his knee down without sliders? notify.gif Presuming he wasn't wearing sliders with jeans, obviously.

No, I had a VFR400 for a short while, it wasn't mine though. Just a run around after I parked my DNA into an X-Type!

The guy I took a ride with was the Power Ranger with a bald head. IE, full leather suit. He was the odd one of the bunch of maniacs. But then one maniac can scare another, thats scary!

Ah, cool as. My brother had the CBR400 for a while, beautiful little bikes. Can't say I was keen on the DNA.

I thought as much. Sounds like it was fun ride, I bet the ZX12s go some. My Dad has the Honda CBR1100, that's fast enough.

Now, a quick question: did you find the practical test to be difficult? Any areas you'd suggest practicing? I'm going for a two day course and test on a 125, but I'd like to be as well prepared as possible beforehand.

Test is pretty easy to be honest. It depends on the rider and the instructor at the end of the day. I learnt with a bunch of down to earth bikers who gave you a more individual kick up the arse on what to do.

I took the course but I also took an extra two hours before hand to get used to the bikes they used and to take a few pointers. I was used to the automatic DNA which was a lot heavier than their CG 125's and also the CG's had different stand setc which I wasn't used to.

all these little points add up to you failing your test. If you can't get it on the stand safely, you won't pass. It's that silly.

You've been on the road with the 50cc for a while I presume, so as long as you remember your proper observation manouvres you'll find it pretty easy. The biggest cock up people make is losing the instructor. Don't go ridiing off, without noticing they stop at a red light. The radios I had were sh*t and I was up front so I kept checking to make sure they were behind me in case I missed them say something.

In some respects the CBT is a lot harder than the test itself, so you're half way there. It's just like redoing your CBT twice over with a little relaxation on the odd mistake. As long as you anticipate whats coming and you're not braking hard, stalling and waving all over the road you're fine!

They pick up on your attitude and confidence also. The less confident do get nursed during the build up to the test but there is no leaniency on the test itself. If you do get a bit flusterd, its not worth going for the test and maybe leaving it for the next day or whatever.

I understand that would make a lot of difference. Luckily, I did my CBT with the guys who I'm taking my course with, and they're pretty much like you're average fellow biker rather than a teacher.

Well, luckily I'll have two days with the bike I'll be taking my test on, with the test at the end of the second day, so I'll be used to the weight etc.

Were they interested in centre stands? I'd heard that as long as you can safely put it onto one of the stands (I prefer side, anyway), you'll pass that part.

I generally watch the theory test DVD every so often, as it has a chapter detailing proper observation. I'm pretty big on my lifesavers (I generally do two on roundabouts and such), so I hope I'll not f*ck that up.

The whole radio situation makes me nervous, but I'll presume their radios will be fine. I hope.

What worries me is my clutch use. I'm good with the clutch, never stall generally etc., but I can get nervous and let it out a little quickly if there's packed traffic. Hopefully just pulling away is classed as safe.

As you say, I guess it really is down to what the instructor deems to be safe and not. Thanks for your help, hearing from peoplethat have passed that's it not like nazi bootcamp makes me more confident. icon14.gif
