Medallion Man
Hey,hey, hey, hey. I'd like to draw the attentions of the staff to the rather misleadingly titled "Things We Know About GTA4" topic. Now I'm not sure how many of you venture often into our GTA4rum (clevar ourent i !!!), but if you go down to that neck a' the woods today you're sure for a big surprise. Especially if you go down there looking to find out what we 'know' about GTA4. I'm drawing your attention to the topic in question as it is a complete mess. The concept itself is fine (if a little premature) however the thread has spiralled out of control, for a thread supposedly detailing the things we 'know' about GTA4 it looks amazingly similar to the many inane 'wishlist' threads that sit along side it. I'm trying to keep this as concise as possible but I'd like use some quotes from fellow members to help get my point across... I had such high hopes for this pin *sigh* It seems we've started in with facts and figures a bit prematurely when speculation and ridiculous happenstance are the only things available to us at this point. Wow, a six page pinned thread on what we KNOW, and 5 and a half pages of it are pure speculation... C'mon guys, Back on topic yeah?I'm not being funny, but this game is not coming out for the best part of two years. How the hell is anyone supposed to know what IS going to be in the game? Anything that has been said about the next GTA is all speculation and nothing else....so that being the case, this is a basically a topic of rumours and speculation. Let people just speculate as they wish. Why don't they do that in all the OTHER topics that are about SPECULATION? Rather than in a thread about WHAT WE KNOW. Sheesh-a-rama. We know nothing. Therefore this is pointless. Is it me, or did the things we know thread turn into rumors/wishlist thread? I say we delete this thread, and start a new one that only mods and admins can post in so we don't have to sort through 144 pages of crap to get some new info.[sic]This guys got a plan... Yep, this is just another thread of idle speculation. You can't see the wood for trhe trees. The "facts" list at the beginning of this post is anything but facts.. I found these forums through a link to this topic on a GTA4 fansite and it is very misleading.its suposed to be about what is known about GTA4 (which is basically squat) but it's just full of speculation. You get the idea, right..? My suggestion would be that this thread is deleted back to its original post and controlled by a mod, either that or lock it and pin a new version (besides, the topic author last updated the thread a year ago and hasn't posted anywhere since last Nov). Otherwise it may as well be merged in with the wishlist thread. It serves no purpose if it is a speculation/spamming/flaming/"but The Getaway was part of the GTA series" dumping ground, we already have puh-lenty of those... Svip
Perhaps, but who cares? If I would read such a topic, I would assume that the starter of the topic had already been updating the first post with new information, thus the rest of the topic seeming useless and not interesting for me to read. And if it is true what you say, then I would PM the starter with information about GTA4 instead of replying. There is nothing to worry about really, although your proposal would make it much cleaner, but I really do not see the fuss.
Mxyzptlk
I think delete the spam, pin it, and lock it after the last relevant post sounds like a good idea. Then if there is new info, someone can PM the staff to amend the first post of the topic. If the facts were easier to pull out of all the speculation in that forum I think it would be a lot more worthwhile.
Medallion Man
To an extent you are correct, Svip, it is little more than an issue of clarity. It's just that I supposed that a topic dedicated to hard facts relating to the next GTA would be of some importance to a site supposedly primarily concerned with the GTA franchise. As such I would have thought it would be administered in a similar fashion to prominent pins in other areas; the "Rules of the Gang Scene" for example, one could equally say "who cares if the 'Rules of the Gang Scene' is full of off topic debate", fact is it isn't. As it is (as Mxyzptlk states ) the topic is pretty pointless, it's like a second pinned wishlist thread. I usually steer clear of it and had almost completely refrained from posting in it (as I have no facts pertaining to GTA4 to contribute) but I checked it out recently and saw all the mess and complaints and thought it would be better off if it were to be re-evaluated. Bear in mind that we should start to hear some info in the next few months. Again as Mxyzptlk states: the ideal solution would be to take it back to the initial post, lock it and amend it as and when solid info appears. Raindancer
I have been meaning to clean up the pinned threads in the GTA4 forum for a while now. I wanted to add some polls to the pinned list but had problems adding multiple polls to the same thread. So i sort of forgot about it. But i agree pretty much most of the pinned topics in there could do with a overhaul. I would however like to keep the boxart thread going and maybe 2 of the other's. give me a few days, i will go throw each thread, and get rid of the crap and may do a merge. Medallion Man
You do that RD and I'll tube it over to Harlseden with a tub of KY... a full one too. I'd say, keep the boxart, sort the facts post out so it's just the one post with a lock on, keep the wishlist and maybe the index and topic guide. Maybe that's just me though... Barguast
^ sounds a like plan. Since ViceDog isn't so active these days, it might be best to unpin the topic and have a more active member - someone who is willing and able to update it regularly - to start a new topic, which we can pin in it's place. Medallion Man
I'd volunteer but I'm never particularly active, it goes up and down alot (my activity). As things tend to...
Raindancer
Ok, i have unpinned everything except for the wishlist and boxart thread. Over the next few days i will clean the threads i unpinned up. *EDIT* @MM, cool. go for it mate.
Medallion Man
f*ck it, I'll do it (nobody else will it seems). Lock the old one and I'll put a new one together, I'll post it 10'oclock GMT, tomorrow. I'll only do it if the thread is locked off however, I don't wish to preside over unfounded speculation dressed up as facts.
Barguast
Done. There's no point in having two topics on the same subject anyway. Good luck keeping the new topic sane.
Medallion Man
Sorted. Ahead of schedule too, I might add (kiss ma bad self!). It needs locking and if any numpty has gone and posted in it, then that needs deleting. It's nothing spectacu-lare, but then there is no confirmed info as yet. RD, when you sort out the un-pinned topics I'd recommend that you re-post meta's index, it's a useful resource for the people that do use it. Perhaps delete that back to its original post and lock it off too..?
GT-1
Locked + Pinned Any link to Meta's topic? Also a direct link to the post(s) that you would like to keep?
Medallion Man
Meta's Index. In the interests of clarity I'd suggest taking it back to the original post.
