Blue screen while burning a DVD?

Hello all. Yes, Zelius is bashing his computer illiterate head against the wall again, for having yet another problem!

For some odd reason, my computer crashes, shows me a blue screen and reboots whenever I try to burn a DVD. This has happened to me three times already, while trying to backup different games/software (no, not warez, I'm entitled to one backup for personal use) and it has happened with two different CD/DVD-burning programs (Alcohol 120% and Nero, both upgraded to the latest version).

I have no idea what the blue screens says, because it reboots on me before I can read it. All I can make out is that it's some kind of "Kernel" error, followed by a screen full of other blah. I've never had this happen to me until about a week ago. I'm using Windows XP Pro SP2 and my burner is an NEC ND-2510A.

Thanks in advance smile.gif

First we need to know what the BSoD is.

Start->Control Panel->System->Advanced->Start and Recovery->Settings

Uncheck "Automatically restart". Click OK until you're out.

However it is also possible that it was recorded in the Event Log

Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer

Under System and/or Application look for something on the date and time that it happened

If you find something double-click on it to read what happened.

To be honest I have no idea how helpful that last idea really is. I've had 1 BSoD recently, still not sure if is a RAM or driver issue and I haven't been able to recreate it. The point being I don't see anything about it in my Event Viewer, infact I don't see any events logged since 11/13/2005 which I also find odd in my case.

Well, here's what I got out of event viewer:

Foutcode; 00000077, parameter1: c0000185, parameter2: c0000185, parameter3: 00000000, parameter4: 01ebc000.

And:

0000: 53 79 73 74 65 6d 20 45   System E0008: 72 72 6f 72 20 20 45 72   rror  Er0010: 72 6f 72 20 63 6f 64 65   ror code0018: 20 30 30 30 30 30 30 37    00000070020: 37 20 20 50 61 72 61 6d   7  Param0028: 65 74 65 72 73 20 63 30   eters c00030: 30 30 30 31 38 35 2c 20   000185, 0038: 63 30 30 30 30 31 38 35   c00001850040: 2c 20 30 30 30 30 30 30   , 0000000048: 30 30 2c 20 30 31 65 62   00, 01eb0050: 63 30 30 30               c000

These were logged at the exact time the BSOD occurred in the System log. It's in Dutch, but it should look pretty straightforward.

If I'm going to recreate the BSOD, I'm going to have to waste yet another DVDR, so I'm going to wait with that, until I'm absolutely sure no one can help me with the info I've provided.

You might have to because that didn't help me at all.

Alright, I have reason to believe it hasn't got anything to do with me burning a CD or DVD, but more with the partition the media is on. I just tried to burn a CD with some songs from that partition, but got the BSOD again. I also get the BSOD when I try to defrag that particular partition, so I think it's either a problem with my HDD, or the way the partition is formatted (bad sectors or whatever). Any ideas?

The BSOD gives me the following error code and claims it has something to do with "new hardware" not being compatible or something, even though there's no new hardware installed.

STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x862A9268, 0x862A93DC, 0x805C7478)

I don't think this code will help out, but I thought I'd include it just in case anyone could decipher it.

Could be a problem with the partition table or MBR (Master Boot Record)

I'm not saying this is the best thing to use but give it a look and see what it can do for you

Also give this a look http://bootmaster.filerecovery.biz/bm_plus.html

If all else fails then you might need to figure out some way to back up everything, do a low level format and start fresh.

Give HDTune a look at it see if the drive is good health, that's the physical drive.
