James987
GTA Vice City invariably crashes EACH time I play, usually after 20-30 minutes but sometimes only after 5. It always happens when I'm in a car. The game freezes but the mp3 (I only use the default Vice City radio station) keeps playing. I can't return to Windows or end the game so I have to turn off my pc. I have tried EVERYTHING on this forum but so far nothing has worked. The crashes occur no matter what resolution I'm in. The only solution I can't try is update my graphics driver because my XP for some reason won't let me do it - it messes up any kind of driver uninstallation/installation I do. Justin
Doesn't work? Try the opposite - see if you can roll back a driver (to one that worked). It should be able to update though. Perhaps roll back and then try to update. And run a virus/spyware scan too, because as far as I'm concerned, something doesn't add up with that. Toggle frame limiter, and just reinstall the game. You never know, reinstalls are magic.
Demarest
You never know, reinstalls are magic. Only if accompanied by a SET file deletion Which should actually be the first thing tried. Keep in mind that many pirated versions of VC has volatile audio errors such as this.
James987
Thanks for advice... reinstalling Vice City doesn't get rid of the crashes so it seems likely that my current catalyst driver for my radeon video card is the culprit. It's the original driver that came with this PC when I bought it last November and, and although a spanking new PC, the catalyst control center crashes upon loading. I've tried loads of different drivers and versions, ATI's own drivers, the alternate Omega ones, I used DriverClean as well, but no matter what I do, XP seems to hate me fiddling with video drivers. I also run Spybot, Adaware and AVG on a regular basis so I doubt spyware/viruses are the problem. It's most frustrating as other games run fine. I also found out on the GTA developers' own support site that Service Pack 2 is not supported. Could that be the problem? PC is still under guarantee so I'll get tech support to sort out my video driver, unless someones knows better? Justin
I also found out on the GTA developers' own support site that Service Pack 2 is not supported. Could that be the problem? No. Vice City works flawlessly on my PC - with Service Pack 2. Tech support sounds like a good idea.
