Lwekk
Well, I see some people posting in here asking for new good music and most people in here really post nothing regarding the indie scene (something Imp way into) So I figured that I would start this thread so people can get into some new music other than the sh*t the play on MTV. So my personal recommendations -Neutral Milk Hotel These guys are one of the best bands I have ever listened to. Essentially, their final album "in the Aeroplane over the Sea" is about a girl who died in WWII whom haunts Jeff Mangums (lead singer/writer) dreams and he falls in love with her. Some of the best lyrics I have ever heard in my life. i.e. "Sweet communist The communist daughter Standing on the sea-weed water Semen stains the mountain tops x2 With cocoa leaves along the border Sweetness sings from every corner Cars careening from the clouds The bridges burst and twist around And wanting something warm and moving Bends towards herself the soothing Proves that she must still exist She moves herself about her fist Sweet communist The communist daughter Standing on the sea-weed water Semen stains the mountain tops x2" The best way to describe these guys would be Marching band music on Acid -Stars Stars has been around for a decently long time, originally formed in Montreal they are one of the main acts on their label Arts & Crafts. The lead singer Amy Millan has the voice of an angel, literally. Give their new album a shot, its called "Set Yourself On Fire†their lyrics are mainly "relationship based", this a fantastic album to listen to if you just broke up with your gf or bf. Broken Social Scene Another act that essentially lead the Canadian Label Arts & Crafts. These guys are simply amazing, their new album is not so good however the album "You Forgot in People" is awesome its a perfect mix of smooth laid back music with hard rock. Check out the songs "Anthems for a seventeen Year Old Girl" and "Almost Crimes" (Amy Millan does the vocals for Anthems and fiest does the back up vocals on Almost crimes) Belle & Sebastian Very Very cool band, they just had an album come out called "The Life Pursuit". This band tends to change their style in almost every album. The new one is more Alt. country and 80's rock. Great album though with wonderful lyrics. Check out the song "Another Sunny Day" The Magic Numbers They just had their LP come out (self titled) its a pretty good straight forward rock album, the lead singer however has a very unique catchy voice. I got addicted to the album just by listening to the first song "Mornings eleven." This is a very very cool band and I look forward to hearing more new things from them The Mountain Goats These guys Define Post rock. It will take a bit for you to enjoy this band; the guys voice tends to piss people off when they first hear it. Their Latest Album "the Sunset Tree" is really amazing. Great lyrics that is hilarious and inspirational at the same time. Check out the songs "Broom People" and "Love Love Love" Wolf Parade Fans of Modest Mouse will love these guys. Their new and only album "apologies to Queen Mary" is one of the most bizarre and beautiful albums I have ever heard Lyrics like "Now well say its in gods hands, but god doesn’t always have the best god damn plans" This album is a must buy for Indie Fans Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! This New York band is the very definition of Indie Rock. Not only did they form their own label, but also they have managed to sell an insane amount of records on it. Their album (self titled) is one of the most unique albums I have ever heard. It is very difficult to find their album due to the fact that it is on a relatively unknown label, but if you can find it I would get it. More to come... .And feel free to post and ask questions, Im always looking for new music
-shaDow
Neutral Milk HotelStars Broken Social Scene Belle & Sebastian The Magic Numbers The Mountain Goats Wolf Parade Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! Neutral Milk Hotel, Stars, Broken Social Scene, Belle & Sebastian, The Mountain Goats, and Wolf Parade are all f*cking excellent. The Mountain Goats aren't post rock, but they're hella good lo-fi sh*t. The Magic Numbers are okay from what I've heard. I lolled that they left some show because they thought the announcer for the event called them all fatties. Looks to me like they're a little self-conscious. I think Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! aren't worth all the hype. They have a few nice songs on the album, but to say that they're the mecca of indie rock is a total bullsh*t statement. Recommendations: ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - one of my favorites. Source Tags & Codes should be in everyone's posession. If you're into that indie heavy guitar sound, they're for you. Animal Collective - f*cking weird psychedelic inspired sh*t. You'll either hate them or love them. Architecture In Helsinki - fun indie pop/rock. The Black Keys - along the same lines of the White Stripes with blues-influenced rock. They rock. The Boy Least Likely To - has a strong, happy force that could cheer any emo kid up. Cat Power - one of the best female vocalists ever. Cursive - really, really good and cool. The Dismemberment Plan - f*cking AWESOME. The Fiery Furnaces - brother/sister combo who make great music. Guided By Voices - a must if you like the Mountain Goats. Liars - word yo, f*ck. The Magnetic Fields - great indie pop. Minus The Bear - the future of music (hopefully). My Bloody Valentine - more shoegaze than indie rock, but it's f*cking lovely. The New Pornographers - I grow weary of making comments. Of Montreal - great indie pop. Pavement - THE indie rock band. Pinback - I can't get enough of Summer in Abaddon. Sebadoh - similar to Pavement. Silver Jews - collaboration of Pavement's Stephen Malkmus and Steve Berman. Slint - the daddies of post rock. You have to hear where it all began. The Unicorns - more great indie pop. Unwound - abrasive and energetic band, they f*cking destroy. Xiu Xiu - trippy experimental indie pop. You've probably heard of a bunch of them, but whatever. I'm never posting music recommendations ever again.

Dakin
This isn't the case for all of the bands listed here, but it might help: instead of posting about the indie bands blowing up in the media that I can already read newspaper articles about in the Arts section every weekend, lets see some local indie talent. What bands are tearing the roofs off your hometown that you think might deserve a little recognition? Link us to some downloads. Untitled.nu - A circle of bands ranging from folk to hip-hop (DJ Hurtsack, Ewok Folk Sessions, The Swell, Slow Hand Motem, Chris Yang, Muffled Suitcase, St Even) with a large selection of downloadable tracks (plus some full albums). I like Ewok Folk Sessions (check out "Floorboards") and Chris Yang ("Dad Said"). Also some great visual art. Based in Guelph, Ontario. Matt Paxton - Folk-pop, sometimes plays with a band (the Mountain). Used to work with this guy. Based in Hamilton, Ontario. Seen him play live with his band once opening for Jason Collett of Broken Social Scene. Releasing an EP soon. Ben Somer - Acoustic country-folk, writes really beautiful songs. Also worked with this guy, he's a hilarious motherf*cker. Based in Toronto. Seen him live a number of times, accompanied by Les Cooper on lap steel, so awesome. Releasing a full-length soon. Controller.Controller (Live)/ (Studio Session)/(Various Tracks) - Dance-punk band with some sweet grooves. They're professional musicians who tour most of Canada, as far as I know (while the above mentioned are mostly students). Based in Toronto. Seen them live once and they were great. I own their EP and have heard their full-length, both rockin'. The Constantines - Raspy soul-punk with wonderfully poetic songwriting. Also fully-touring musicians who've been released in the US as well. Based in Toronto. Seen them play once (and going again later this month), if you know the music and love the band, they can put on a sweaty show and rock a house intensely. I own all three of their albums, all very worth it, definitely check them out. Edited February 7, 2006 by Dakin 2G | My DA
-shaDow
The Constantines and Controller.Controller are fairly well known just about anywhere you go. Some Austin bands that I'm digging: The Story Of - The influences section of their myspace should tell you what kind of sh*t these guys put out. Good trippy spacey type stuff. Jetsuns - After looking them up just now I found out that they broke up. f*ck. You can click the link for a music video to the song that got me into them. Again, hella space rock. Spoon - Extremely obscure and unknown Austin band that's just now coming out of the woodwork. Good luck finding any of their albums. I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness - If you like Spoon these guys are pretty much along the same aesthetic. They just dropped a new album this year, and if the snatches on OiNK are any indication, they're going to be huge. The only other ones that really stand out are the popular ones, like ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Explosions in the Sky, Okkervil River, and The American Analog Set. EmSixTeen
Spoon - Extremely obscure and unknown Austin band that's just now coming out of the woodwork. Good luck finding any of their albums. lol, obscure? If it's the Spoon I know, not-so-much. Certainly not 'popular' though. Good stuff nonetheless. As for local bands around here, there's not the greatest of decent scenes to be honest. I Before I go on, I suck at commenting on music, I just love listening to it. Notables however are: Element - Found out about them not long before actually seeing them at a Jimmy Eat World concert. Great show, and I suppose the fact thei supported LOLJEW says something. There are a few tracks on the site, and I have their EP ripped too. Check out Not an Opinion for the immediate decision people seem to make. Personally, I like them quite a bit, probably my favourite local band. Sixstarhotel - Verging on emo, though more only in their styling.. Not an actual emo group. I like them, bought their EP and listen to a couple of their tracks quite often, but in typical local band fashion they're a little hit or miss. Good performers though. Just noticed their 'best' track (Bad Things Happen to Good People) is actually up for download on the site, here. Wasn't an immediate 'oo' track for me, but it definitely grew. Uh, I can't be arsed finishing this post after forgetting about it.. Maybe tomorro
Purple9
Clap your hands say yeah. Yes, excellent debut album. Really really nice collection of songs, it flows brilliantly. Destined for big things. Broken Social Scene. Yes, that second album is quality. Only recently got into these guys...even though they've not actually been around that long themselves (2001?). Some (similar, good, indie) bands to check out; Yo La Tengo Secret Machines Decemberists Valley of the Giants Apostle of Hustle The Precinct - We're upping our standards, so up yours!
Dakin
Apostle of Hustle Their album is so nice. It's BSS with all the sometimes-annoying bits taken out. You can listen to the whole album under the "Folkloric Feel" section here. 2G | My DA

Lwekk
The Electric Six These guys are from Detriot are one of the weirdest bands I have ever heard. Thier most recent album "fire" has the track "Danger! High Voltage" that has lyrics like "Fire in the disco, fire in the taco bell" these guys are prettyy weird but rock the f*ck out. check out the songs Gay Bar Danger! While you're at it, check out some more bands from the Elephant 6 catalogue.. Olivia Tremor Control and Apples in Stereo are both fantastic.. OTC especially.. They're like extended Beatles' albums, with added acid. The Elephant 6 collective is the best thing to happen to indie in a long while. Neutral Milk Hotel is my favorite band of all time. Jeff Mangum (and the rest of Neutral Milk Hotel) needs to get off his ass and write some more music though. I'm going to see Clap! in April, hopefully. Otherwise, this topic is a sight for sore eyes. Music chat is often a depressing place to visit. Edit: I guess since this a recommendation thread, I should recommend things. Locally, the best bands are: The Black Keys Posture Coach The Zou And let me emphasize shaDow's recommendation of the Silver Jews and Minus The Bear. Excellent bands. You guys all stole some of the more well known bands that I was planning on recommending. Edited February 15, 2006 by Phalanxe

Mario
The Get Up Kids are probably my favorite indie band at the moment. Guilt Show is amazing. The Sane come in a close second. Very awesome music, they're worth looking into. Seriously. Tegan and Sara make a dynamic duo. Mostly acoustic based folk rock, but they've got a couple harder songs out there. Panic! At the Disco is quite good. Pleasantly upbeat. They're just pleasing to listen to. The Fictions have been proving themselves up until late. They're going through some changes at the moment, hopefully they will overcome their issues and continue to create worthwhile music. Jason Collett is a great folk rock indie artist. Contrastingly relaxing compared to the other bands I've posted here. Those are just very few off the top of my head.
Lwekk
Rilo Kiley- the lead singer Jenny Lewis simply rocks, I got to see these guys open up for Ozma in 2001 an dthey put on a great show. All of thier albums are great (they have 3) but in particular the album "exceution of all things" is amazing, every single track on the album sound fantastic. If you like the Elected, Jenny Lewis dated the lead singer of them and like half of thier songs are about thier relationship. Thier latest album "More Adventurous" is also pretty good and they try to take a more alt-country approach, but the album still rocks pretty hard especially the song "Portions for Foxes". Jenny Lewis also does the backup vocals for the postal service's album. check out thier webiste www.rilokiley.com they have some great music videos Also Jenny Lewis is smoking hot Edited March 6, 2006 by Lwekk
