fuckindumass
Well, I've wanted to upgrade my video card and I saw ATI came out with a 2006 All in Wonder with 256mb. It's pretty much what I already had but twice the memory. Well, I get to circuit city and they're gone, so I go to bestbuy. I find out circuit city just moved a little bit, and end up leaving with an ATI X1600XTpro 512mb. I get home and instructions say 300w or better power supply, and I (had) a 300w supply, so I plugged it in and quickly had it going after installing some drivers. SA now runs on 1600x1200 with everything on high, Postal2 AW runs with everything maxed...so I was checking out other games when suddenly my pc shuts down. I go to hit the switch on the back and pull out the cord, and it's pretty warm back there. So I open the case and the power supply is really hot, and starting to smell. And to make matters worse, with no fans running it's radiating that heat to the processor heat sink just a quarter inch away. I stuck a piece of cardboard betweeen them and hoped for the best. I let it all sit for a few hours, and find when I plug it in I can get an led on the board to light up, but pc won't start. So today I got a 420w supply and luckily it's all good now. I can't believe I didn't bother to keep an eye on temps while testing a new part that added more load to the power supply. DOH!
Duders
Running an ATi X1600XT on a 300 watt PSU doesn't sound like a very good idea. And don't try to save money with a tiny 420 watt PSU either. If your going for one, it might as well be alot bigger. -duders
fuckindumass
really? I am running 2 hdd, 2 dvd drive, (no floppy) and that video card. How many watts do I need?

What make/model of power supply did you get, btw?

fuckindumass
so far so good, a ran a couple games for a while, and power supply stayed within reason, and cpu hit a max of 50 celcius. Tomorrow will try one of those GTA marathon rampages, see how it handles tanks and stuff lol

fido2
I hit the limit of my 420w (I think) thermaltake psu, I think what caused it was having 7 hard drives in all at once. And a word of advice to anyone at all: dont get a case with screwless hard drive bays. They may be slightly quieter, but because the brackets are plastic they are also thermally isolated from the metal of the case. Long story short, 50 degrees.
