Johnno
I'm having a few problems with my computer monitor. It's nothing special, just a 17" CRT ImageQuest QV770. I've had it for almost 2 years, and it's starting to play up. It's always been ran at 1024x768 resolution, at 60Hz. Every time I've felt it in the past 2 years it's always been unusually hot - but I just assumed it was normal and carried on. About 2 weeks ago, it started fading, to the point where it was almost black. These fades happened over about 3 minutes, then would stay like that for a while, then take another 3 minutes to come back to normal, where it would stay again for a while, then repeat. I've noticed that it doesn't happen until around 2 hours after the computer is first turned on - this makes me think it could have something to do with overheating. I've tried the monitors degauss option, but to no avail. I'm not exactly sure of what would make a magnetic field, but there are several things around it - 3 satelite speakers (2 either side, one on top), a router and a subwoofer (below, on the floor). At the moment I take it the el cheapo monitor is buggered, and I should just upgrade to LCD? Wolf68k
Just get the best bang for your buck. Figure out what your budget is. Go to your local stores that sell computer monitors and see what they have in your price range...take a small note pad and pen/pencle with you to write down the make and model. Come home and, as best you can, get online and find out as much as you can about each, hit the maker's web site. Besure to read the pro and user reviews, if there are any, for each model. If you can't find anything for the exact model look for someone close to it. Stay away from off name brands. Personally I've never heard of ImageQuest monitors, but then I'm in the USA and you're in AU (according to the flag in your post). Samsung, ViewSonic, NEC, Sony, and others are the ones to pay attention to. CRT or LCD? Generally if your budget will allow for a 19" CRT then you can go with a 17" LCD. I know that doesn't help much. Yes CRT tend to get hotter than LCD, you need to look at what the air flow is around monitor.

I'm not saying they are an excellent brand or anything, but certainly not very sketchy. Also, BenQ is a good LCD brand, and I'd reccomend avoiding AOpen. Computer makers like Dell and HP/Compaq also have their own LCDs, which are of very good quality as well, so you might want to look at them. Dalpura
John, Dick Smith Electronics and Harvey Norman sell 17" Acer AL1714 LCDs for $375AU now. I bought mine over a year ago for $500, then they dropped in price. But yeah, one's well over a year old, and the other (I run two identical ones for dual screen) just under a year, and they're going fine. One dead pixel on the older one, but otherwise no issues whatsoever. And if you're going to go for a CRT again, I've had a Mitsubishi something-or-another CRT run with no problems at all from 1996 to this very day. CrazyDude
Dick Smith Electronics Hehe... Dick. At work we have all Dell LCDs. They're damn nice, as are their stands. I highly recommend them.

Dell LCD's are hella nice. Their standard analog ones, like the E193FP, isn't too hot, since it lacks DVI, but it is still very nice. However, the FP1905, is sooo incredibly good. I highly reccomend looking to catch one of their sales if it gets to a reasonable price. It can get to be about $330 sometimes in the USA on sale. Luke15
I would suggest on your budget you go for a nice 22" Iiyama Monitor.
|Zephyr|
I just bought a 17" Phillips LCD from my local store for $430AUD. I did as wolf said and took a pad and pen, got the model number and came home and read reviews. Phillips and samsung are the only 2 brands that offer a 3 year 0 dead pixel warenty (all other brands you have to wait until you get 4 or 5 dead pixels, i believe) and they had a 5 year warrenty. If you want some help, go to a local store, not anything like Harvey Norman, as they don't know a real lot about what they are selling.
Johnno
Thanks guys for responding, but I must have worded my question wrong. I didn't mean how to buy a new monitor (although very helpful for the when the time does come), I meant does anyone know a possible cause of this problem, or has anyone heard of it before? I would suggest on your budget you go for a nice 22" Iiyama Monitor. That made me smile. I haven't told my budget yet . But on a student's budget, I know I won't be having anything too flash. Probably around $200 to $350AUD.
Cran.
Well, look in your local newspaper. Late last year, I was lucky enough to find an ad for $20 CRTs So look around. They've got hell cheap CRTs on eBay too.
