millermagic
I don't know what is up with the computer lately, but anyway, it is constantly reading and accessing the hard drive. It slows call of duty down mainly, but I know that it isn't good for it to be doin that all the time. What should I do?
facugaich
You may have a process runing in background (it could be a virus maybe, I dunno). I think a HijackThis log would be helpful. Edited February 4, 2006 by facugaich
millermagic
Well, last night I ran F-Prot Antivirus trial and spybot search and destroy. I put it in standby. Now, it acts like it is stuck in safe mode - only the classic view and no networking at all. Any suggestion as to what I should do?
anus
How about defragmenting your drive? It coul help a lot. Plus, that AV is crap, just get AVG Free, it's great and free. Also download Ad-Aware Personal and do the scans in Safe Mode.
millermagic
I ended up reformatting and reinstalling windows. A fragmented hard drive would not be accessing constantly. But F prot antivirus picked up alot more than AVG free did and I use ad aware and spybot anyway.
PsychoFlames
A fragmented hard drive would not be accessing constantly. No, but it could significantly increase the seek time if the files aren't arranged contiguously. Imagine the game engine having to load a texture that is split into 10 different segments and scattered all across the harddrive. That's only one texture. I'm not saying it's the most likely problem, but it can definitely cause problems.

fuckindumass
It would have been nice to see a hijack this log. Well, make a log while your reformat is fresh, and each time you add a program, for comparison when troubleshooting. It is a good tool, and can sometimes eliminate the need for reformatting when other tools let you down.

Luckily, no. I didn't think Windows would let it go that far without taking matters into it's own hands. Worst I've seen was on my family's PC, and that was only nearing 50% on a 40 GB drive. millermagic
I don't think fragmentation was the problem. I usually defrag every sunday morning.
