Sporty new 6800GS AGP

I just gotmy new eVGA GeForce 6800GS 256MB AGP card today. Got it 3 days before FedEx's site said I would.

So far this thing rocks, compared to my 5700LE 256MB I was running up until today that's saying a lot.

I haven't run a full set of benchmarks but I can tell you this much;

3DMark03: 5700LE=2111 ... 6800GS=9335

NBench3: 5700=1715 ... 6800GS=2559

Using CoDBench 1.0 - the only results I'm going to list are 1600x1200 average FPS for Normal, High and Max settings and in that order

5700LE: N-55.85 ... H-48.75 ... M-42.50

6800GS: N-133.80 ... H-114.20 ... M-100.35

I don't even remember what my 3DMark05 5700LE results were, but as you can imagine they weren't very good. I haven't reinstalled 3DMark05 as of yet but I will later.

If I could have ever gotten the Guru3D BF2 demos to work with the 5700LE, and I doubt they will work any better with the 6800GS, then I would've gotten some useable benchmarks there. I think the problem is the demos were made with BF2 Demo and/or the 1.12 patched might have something to do with it as well.

The card is so new the only drivers that support it are the 82.12 BETA drivers (Dec. 22, 2005). I'm strangely hoping these drivers are the reason why I had some problems with SplinterCell Chaos Theory Co-Op, but I'm going to try it again with Shader Model 3 back down to 1.1 it's currently on 3.

I'd rather it be a driver problemand not find out that the VRAM is bad or the card itself it bad. I've already send back for replacement the PC3200 RAM I got for Christmas, I don't want to have to do the same for this card.

Yes I've got it hooked up to the PSU and yes I've got plenty of power; Antec TRUE430 430watts, 3 tranformers one for each of the 12v rails which can do 420watts per rail, and the GFX card is on a rail with 3 case fans...power shouldn't be an issue.

Wow wolf, this information is very useful to me especially since i am upgrading to the 6800GS also. I purchased a EVGA 6800 on newegg.com about 3 weeks ago and when i got the card i was happy with it, but i really wanted the 256mb ddr3 and i didn't think they would ever come out with the 6800GS. But then a few days ago i checked EVGA's site and they had the GS AGP on there. (Thank God i bought an EVGA card with the step-up program) So i will be returning it and upgrading to that one in a few days. inlove.gif

Also, do you know the reason as to why they didn't clock the core speed even CLOSE to the PCI-E version of the card?

I didn't notice until you said something, but wow you're right the AGP version is clocked slower....that sucks.

They have 2 different GS's. The GS and GS CO. The GS core being 350MHz and 400MHz RAM while the CO is 400MHz on both.

The PCIE version is 425MHz at the core and 400Mhz RAMDAC.

Atleast they are still 1000MHz RAM effective.

I wonder how far it can be OC'ed, with the stock cooler that is.

If nothing else I might be able to get my GS up to 400Mhz at the core with the stock cooler safely. Yes or no? Although I would like to get a replacement cooler from Arctic-Cooling.com if they have one that'll fit.

And I'm going to assume that 59C, with an ambient temp of 42C, is normal. This is, if I didn't say it before, my first GFX card that with a temp sensor.

The day before when I was going to get this, MonarchComputer.com had both the 6800 and 6800GS from eVGA. But then the next day only the GS, which was fine with me. Faster card, faster ram, more ram.

I knew there was something I forgot to do. And now I have. This card is big/long at 8.5inches (21.59cm). I had been asking about the length of a x800 GTO, turns out this is about the same size.

Why is it if everything else in tech is getting smaller that GFX cards are getting bigger? (retorical question)

I would say that the Core should be able to clock to 400Mhz fine. My 6800 as of now (also my first with a sensor) is sitting about 61C, and the card can withstand up to 127C (which is scorching hot) then it throttles down, so should be nothing to worry about. And yes the card's are huge, and i have no explanation for that one.

Sorry to bother with all of my own questions, but have you opened up Rivatuner (if you have it) and checked to see if the Card is Unlockable like the 6800 Vanilla? It is the same NV40 core right?

I too am running a 6800GS (PCI-E). It runs rather cool (I've only ever seen it up to 59C after playing games for a while) and the performance is great for the price. I got a bit over 5000 with 3DMark05 (A64 3200+, 1 GB Corsair XMS Dual Channel, eVGA 6800GS) the last time I tested.

No problem with the questions. I created the topic to brag/boast/whatever about the new card I got, and to talk about the fact that the 6800GS is now for AGP...which I thought I'd never see and that nVidia would give up on.

From what I understand the 6800 started off with the NV40 chip but they later switched to the NV41 and now NV42. Also from what I understand, the 6800GS is using the NV42 as well.

I've never used RivaTuner before but I just downloaded it.

Strange it says NV40, so maybe it is unlockable. A thread at Anandtech.com says No "...there will be no unlockable pipes on the 6800GS (they will be physically cut)."

I followed the steps to unlocked at firingsquad.com. But to a point. I did get it to say "custom 16x1,6xp)" which they say means that all 16pixel and the 6 vertex pipes are unlocked. However because I'm a chicken, I'm not going to be the guinea pigto see if it really works....I'll let you do that smile.gif.

The items disabled in the GS are different than the 6800 in the article but the results are the same.

Not that I would, but RivaTuner says the GS can be pushed up to 440Mhz at the core and 1250Mhz for the RAM. I might if I had that Arctic-Cooling VGA cooler biggrin.gif.

Stupid I know but one of the things that worried me a bit when I first started up wit this card is that there was video card BIOS flash up before the mobo BIOS. With the Leadtek card that was little thing from them before the ASUS BIOS came up. Also the card before the 5700LE, the GF4 MX440, had it's own BIOS flash up before the mobo's.

Like I said, I know it's a stupid thing to worry about but when you're used to something for so long and from so many cards you get use to it.

My temps are now at 62C with 45C ambient, but then CPU is also setting at 46C and the mobo at 38C. I'm not sure what the room temp is off hand, I need to get a hermometer in here.

It says the threshold is 120C.

Mmmm... If wolf scores around 9k in 03, I recon he'll only just reach 4k in 05.

Anyway, very nice card wolf, you should have some very fine gaming moments to come with it smile.gif

I just clocked my 6800GS up (500/1200) and rebenched and gained nearly 1000 3DMarks on my score, with little increase in heat (especially since it runs at a lower clock on the desktop). I got a good performance boost in games like Half-Life 2 and Need for Speed: Most Wanted.

How much you want for that 5700LE?

Sorry, not selling it. Gonna use it for a second rig I've been slowly builting with hand-me0down parts from the current system. Now I just need a KVM switch and I can fire it up.....well after I get my replacement RAM back too.

For $60 you can get a ATI 9550 that's just as good...well same specs anyway

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814161153

Played BF2 for a bit. Bumped up slowly. Now running...

VideoOptions Previous Settings Current
Resolution [email protected]* [email protected]*
Terrain Low Medium
Effects Low Medium
Geomerty Medium Medium**
Texture Medium Medium
Lighting Low Medium
Dynamic Shadows Off Low
Dynamic Lighting Off Low
Texture Filtering Low Low***
View Distance Scale 100% 100%
*only because I forgot and never bothered to lookas what refresh rates the monitor can do at that res. Just looked I can do 100hz at 1024x768

**I forgot to change it to High before playing, it's at High now

***forgot what this was at the time so I left it low, gonna try Medium.

Game play still looks smooth for me.

Loading into the map is still a pain in the butt, I don't mean the load screen I mean after I'm on the new map and read to play my system lags for a bit and the HDD lightis lit for a good little while. Before I could usually get kicked for lose connection because it would take so long but it usually after going from one map to the next. So far that seems to be a bit quicker but not by much.

There is abenchmark program for BF2 from Guru3D that use their custom demos for the BattleRecorder but either they only work with the BF2Demo or up to 1.03 but they don't work at all with version 1.12. Ani't no way in hell I'm going to reinsatll the game, or the demo, just to get the benchmark work.

I got the XFX 6800GS just the other day biggrin.gif . Lookin very nice, but still a bit choppy during heavy fights in cs and the such, so im going to boost myself up to 2 gigs of RAM DDR 3200.

One thing thogh, i got the 82.12 drivers, but whenever i go to my settings its telling me its a 6800GT not a 6800GS. And yes im sure its a GS, because thats what i ordered and thats what it says on the box, heh. Any good optimisation tips? what would be safe overclock levels without having the need to buy a fan or cooling system, so i dont frazzle it

Is it an AGP or PCIE?

Did you use the drivers that came on the CD that you got with your card? That would be the best thing to do.

Whats the deal with this card and it's release?

I have a 256mb BFG 6800 Ultra OC AGP.

I could pick one of these up for about £200 on ebay or even in shops iirc.

The XFX GS XXX Extreme is around £175, so about £25 difference.

I can run BF2 with everything on high and 4x AA (application controlled in driver settings otherwise it fails) at [email protected] I need to keep the textures set to medium though, otherwsie it gets jerky.

Thats a big difference for about £25 difference in price.

I've looked around and I can't see the value of this cards release. What's so special about it?

Also, I hightly suggest reading this tweak guide for BF2. Really useful.

EDIT, also, have you tried unlocking all the pixel pipelines in Riva tuner? From 12 to 16. Don't forget to save setting and apply at startup, and don't forget to remember the defualt pipelines if you need to revert it back.

Tis the AGP. What values, if at all would be safe to overclock the card to without having put extra cooling in? yea i put the original install disk, then installed the 82.12's.

Nice card so far, things should be tip top when i get my RAM cool.gif

@Dup

Since it's BFG and they not only OC but also use a OCable heatsink&fan on it, so that usually accounts for their price being higher.

Judging from their other cards in the 6x00 series I'm guessing they OCed it to about 375MHz?

Did you unlock yours? If so how is it running, any problem?

@Roachclip

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Wait and see if things change with the final version of the drivers come out. If it's still saying 6800GT then, talk to XFX and see what they have to say about it.

//edit

Good news to one and all with this card. According to a thread in Anandtech.com's forums it can be unlocked, of course as long as the card you get does infact have the NV40 chip.

The only thing left to confirm is if you unlock it, is it artifact free and stable? Because if not, there's not much of a point it....and it's the reason I'm going to be the guinea pig

Now from what I'm seeing spec wise, it's possible to unlock and OC this to equal that of a 6800Ultra. So for around $220-250 you can get a 6800GS AGP, unlock it and OC it, and it'll have the same specs of a $400-500 6800Ultra. I'd have to say that's worth the money.

On the second page the guy that did the unlocking also OCed as it turns out. But the problem I have is that 3DMark05 results are nearly as good as I would expect. Only a 200 point increase. Tom's Hardware has a AGP round up for the Summer of '05, and their 3DMakr05 results there is about 1700 (give or take) points difference between the 6800 vanilla and the Ultra, with the GT being the middle as it should with just over 1000 points difference. Something about that whole thing bothers me.

Even Firgingsquad.com got a 400point increase in just unlocking the 6800.
