Finally Gta might have some real competition, I bought a PS2 Magazine about a month or 2 back, And saw this game, "Just Cause" And looked at some screenshots of it, And thought, "Just another GTA Wannabe, But then looked at some screenshots And found out you could shoot while free falling, I thought "Awesome!" Gta might have some competition biggrin.gif

StoryLine And Info:

"In Just Cause, you take on the role of the flamboyant Rico Rodriguez – an undercover CIA operative specialising in regime change - as he tries to overthrow the corrupt government of San Esperito. This rogue South American island is suspected of stockpiling WMDs and it’s your job to negate the threat to world peace. It could be to your advantage that this tropical paradise is about to implode as various factions vie for power - it just needs a gentle nudge in the right direction.

Just Cause offers the freedom to tackle your assignment however you want: play the island’s factions off against one another; incite a rebellion among the masses; or build alliances with rebel forces and drug cartels. The incredibly detailed game world consists of 1,225 sq. miles of mountains, jungles, beaches, cities and villages which can be explored by land, sea and air. And you will have at your disposal one of the most varied and exciting array of vehicles, planes and watercraft ever seen in a video game.

Christofer Sundberg, director at Avalanche Studios says: Our overall vision for Just Cause is to create a realistic game world where players can unleash their creativity in order to bring down a regime using any means possible. I have learned from past experiance never to even begin to judge a free roamer (GTA Wanna Be) untill I get my hands on it. As I see it, if you wanted to judge, say, Doom 3 before it came out, you would have a good idea of how good of a game it will be as its just a FPS, the same goes for Need For Speed: Most Wanted, its just a driving game. However, new free roamers such as this are very hard to judge as they always try to do so much. There are allways many questions like "What will the shooting me like?"; "What will the driving be like?"; "Will there be a large selection of cars?"; "Will the car damage be any good?" etc, you get my point.

The only thing I can say from seeing the screens is that they have done a good job with the game engine, if it realy does look that good ingame, then it may have potential. On the other hand, Driv3r looked realy nice aswell when that came out, but it never lasted.

And the video isnt realy ingame footage, its just a tech demo, designed to show off what the engine can do. Sure its real time, but who knows if it will still look as good and run as smooth on a console when the game is finished?

Oh and by the way, does anybody else think Far Cry when seeing that video?

This game looks pretty cool, but I am sick and tired of people always saying "Oh, it's just another GTA clone" and things like that. It's pretty hard for games NOT to be like GTA. Think about it, the GTA games cover so many things. So, now every time there is a game where you can drive and shoot it automatically makes it a "GTA wannabe". confused.gif

Well from that tech demo and the screenshots, this game looks awesome, and I'll try it out as soon as it's released. Anyone wonder if the game will look this amazing on Playstation 2?

It does remind me an awful lot about Mafia. That was a kickass game for sure smile.gif

Yeah, I was almost thinking it looked like Scarface: The World is Yours.

It might be a good game but i doubt it will be as good as GTA

Gta san andreas was crap imo, and by what i can see right now, that game will be better.

Its not about the type of gameplay in these games, its about the fact that they let you free roam, letting you choose which missions you do and how you do them. GTA just happend to be the first game to do this back with the original GTA. Thats why I like to call them free roamers, because thats normaly the only thing they all have in common.

Take Driv3r, that game sucked at shooting but was great for driving. Ture Crime: LA, that sucked at driving but was great during the fighting. All the games are normaly focused on their own thing, its the free roaming that links them together.

You mean the PC version right? If not yuck, Mafia was terrible on consoles, one of the worst games I'd ever played.

Just Cause looks like an alright game, but after playing games like Half Life 2 and Fear, not many games have appealed to me.

Real link now wink.gif

It's a swedish gaming show, fast forward to 13.40, and you'll see some exclusive video clips.

I'll translate some things;

They start with some info on their company. On how they have been on the bottom and crawled themself up. There are currently 65 people working on the game (they started out with eight).

"We had the technique as a ground to stand on, as the technique was new, we could do new concepts. So we wanted to make a game were the player was unbelivable free to do alot of different things, drive cars, planes, boats, jump between cars, just do everything that he/she always dreamt about."

In one mission Rico jumps out of a plane and is supposed to meet his contact, named Sheldon, who works for the CIA and is fighting for his life on the beach, were you land.

the game is about Rico Rodriguez, who is a CIA expert on regime changes. He get send to San Asperito, to crash the regime, which is run by a dictator named Salvador Mendoza, who runs this republic with an iron fist.

The second mission is about breaking out the guerilla leader out of prison. From there we let the player free to get himself to the point were he is going to rescue the guerilla leader and get into the prison. If that is by plane and parachute into the prison, or if he swims into the prison, or if he drives a car through the gates or if he just walks through the gates, or sneaks in, is totally up to him. That is nothing that we want to control.

The missions are kind of easy, but by letting the player be creative, the ways you solve the missions gives alot of variation.

Thw whole "world" is divided into different provinces. Each province is controlled either by the guerill or the goverment. And by helping the guerill to take over these territories you can chnge the power balance, and thus making it easier to get your way through the "world".

Then also is the "world" bigger than anything on a console from what I know. With a mass on 32 * 32 km. With tons of variating enviroment changes, everything from djungle to cities to villages to hotels. There are alot of differet bigger places that you can visit. We have a big prison, and a bordell in the crater of a vulcano, which is kind of cool.

When interviewing one of them about another, bigger project he says like this;

"Well yes we have gotten very far with Just cause. But were are not on the lazy side, as we have already started our next gens techinque, so to say, which will be specialdeveloped to X-box 360, PS3 and also PC."

How long does it take to develop these things?

"We started out at xero with Just cause, and we have beenn working on it for 2 years now. And we are over 60 persons now, so it lies alot of time and work on it. And now when we are building on, so are we of cousre working on with the things we have done. So the next game will have alot of work behind it.

He also says that they have focused on making huge playable worlds, this also in just cause. They could have made it bigger but they felt it wouldn't be as fun when you wouldn't even discover everything. He feels that the 32 * 32 Km is more than well. They have gotten alot of attention with their engine as it is differnt from the current ones that are out now.

He also said that they were done by this Christmas, but it was up to the publisher when it would come out.

All i can say is that this game looks amazing. The engine Avalanche studios have developed looks great.

Rico Rodriguez

Oh my f*cking god...

Great graphics, gameplay looks just like any other gta style game would be. We can be sure that jet gets some serious speeds. But it lacks the same thing every game of this kind, even GTA, lacks; realness (not realism). For example, then pedistrians. Always the same kind and appearing in small groups. Not much density, both traffic and pedestrians. And if you crash against a building, nothing happens to it. Maybe it is too much to ask, but it would be cool if for instace, you crashed against a small house, make some damage to the building, and see people actually fixing the building.

Excepting my 3rd point, The Getaway is different from any other game of this genre. That's why I like it so much smile.gif

Lol Kraknor and Scarafce. Me and my bro always bother each other with that game. Its just a joke me and him know about. Reading the review in PC Gamer and peoples faces in it look funny. If you dont get what im saying ignore me.

It still looks good. Im going to get it if it turns out good as soon as its out in Blockbuster or at Future Shop or Wal-Mart.

It looks that it might turn out bad but its looks pretty good. And the graphics look superb.
