Rocketkiller
Basically, I'm trying to get the platters of an old hard drive to spin, but I don't have an extra PSU just laying around. How would I go about doing this? I have 2 choices, power the motor directly with dc, but there are 4 contacts on the back of the motor, or I could power it with the molex connector somehow. I tried both ways, but couldn't get it to spin, the molex connector didn't do anything and the contacts on the motor just made it vibrate for a few seconds. Another thing. Knowing that it's a brushless motor, I took apart (broke) and old brushless case fan, but there are only 3 noticable contacts which are used for powering it. So what's the extra contact on the hard drive for?
fido2
When trying to make hard drive disks spin, dont use the molex connector you would usually connect power to, this is designed to power the whole device as opposed to just the motor. The extra conductors on the hard drive motor are probably for speed regulation, trial and error would find you the right ones. Dunno why its vibrating, maybe its jammed, maybe its designed to stop working after you break the seal or something, and maybe its just bung. Rocketkiller
No it's a brushless motor, they need 3 (or 4) connections to work. About the molex connector, when I disconnected the IDE cables for the hdd's and powered up the computer, I was pretty sure I heard then spinning.
