Kaj.
We all have our favourite cars and manufacturers, and they all have the company they fight with. So here we are, in a topic that we use to find out which is really better. You cannot use personal opinion, everything must be facts and statistics. So, which is better? BMW vs. Mercedes-Benz
JJHW
If we look at Motorsport, BMW have a rich history, Mercedes don't as much... But hey, both fairly successful in racing. +FF7F24+
Logic3
Well, the Mercedes-McLaren SLR is by far the best Merc, and the BMW 850i is probably the best beamer ... Well, lookie here: SLR Curb Weight: 3,550 lbs Type: 5.4 Liter Supercharged Gas Drivetrain: Front-Mid Engine / RWD Valvetrain: 24-Valve SOHC Cylinders: 8 Cylinder Configuration: Vee Displacement: 5,496 cc Horsepower(HP): 626 @ 6500 RPM Torque(FT-LBs.): 575 @ 3250 RPM Redline: 7000 RPM 850i Engine: OHC v12 Size liters / cu. in.: 5.6 / 340 Horsepower: 372 Torque: 402 Sorry about the sh*t info for the BMW, but yeah, it's sort of obvious which one is more powerful, i'll get some crash-test results / ride comfort stuff now Edit: lol, couldn't find any for either ... But you also have to look at the prices of the cars. I couldn't find any prices for a new 850i (the page I found a used one on said the most recent model was a '96). So I'll go with the new M6. Model: Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Engine type: V8, supercharged, 5439cc Power/Torque: 626bhp @ 6500rpm / 575 lb ft @ 3250rpm Transmission: Five-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive Suspension: (front) Double wishbones, coil springs, anti-roll bar (rear) double wishbones, coil springs Fuel/CO2: 19mpg (combined) / n/a Acceleration: 0 to 60mph: 3.7sec Top speed: 208mph Price: £313,465 Model BMW M6 Engine type V10, 4999cc Power/Torque 507bhp @ 7750rpm / 383 lb ft @ 6100rpm Transmission Seven-speed sequential Fuel/CO2 19mpg (combined cycle) / 357g/km Performance 0-62mph: 4.6sec / Top speed 155mph Price £80,000 estimate Now, if you had a BMW that was worth £313,465 (roughly $626,000) you'd have one hell of a car. Here are the original pages for the statistics. Mercedes Benz SLR BMW M6
Logic3
I don't care about the price tbh, if I had enough, i'd buy both. But for people who do, the 850i would be the better choice I suppose..
Luke15
I like both brands, i love the 80's Mercedes cars. That was one damn good era for Merc. The only thing which puts them both down is the fact that everyone has one.. there too common.

Kaj.
We have a few different taxi companies here in town. They are usually American cars, but some of the companies have some Toyota Echos because they are more environment friendly than their American counterparts. Ok, seeing as this idea has kind of died, can some people throw some ideas out here. Rivalries and such?
Guybrush Threepwood
Ok, seeing as this idea has kind of died, can some people throw some ideas out here. Rivalries and such? Some GM versus Ford products? I don't know. Rivalries between brands aren't as interesting anymore. Take the mercedes vs. bmw thing. They both make quality cars (even though mercedes has had some quality problems, but that's for another topic and is something of the past), and people will mostly choose on looks, feelings and even stereotypes of a brand. If you want to really test companies against eachother, pit some cars from the same league against one another
uzer
The SLR was McLaren's work anyway, off the SL65 AMG. Mercedes not very involved. As for who's better, I'd say whoever is making the most profit is obviously doing something more right than the other guy. I don't much feel like googling any numbers, but the f*ck does your opinion matter. $ talks.

Duders
Seriously, almost everyday me and my mates find some way of making fun to the Smart Car (a teacher we hate is in it while hummers from all four directions come crashing into her...). Plus, why the hell would a supercar need a heavy automatic gearbox and a big SL interior? Having said, I do love the older BMW 750. -duders
Mega
Well. Mercedes vs. BMW is a hard comparsion. If you are the type of guy who buys your car brand new you would prefer BMW for it's handling (this is a true statement) and Mercedes for the image (statistically proven the 3 branch star makes it better). Ageing, an old Merc will always look better than an old BMW. In France, there is a general feeling towards these cars which is pretty peculiar. Most of old BMWs are driven by arab young people (E39, E38 and older) and if you drive any of the E-classes you look like a taxi driver (it's the most popular cab here). In terms of image, Mercedes is far better than BMW, if you consider keeping your car longer than 5 years, and if you buy it brand new. Signature soon. Duders
Also, to be honest Im not a big fan of BMW's new design models either. I would definitely prefer a CLS over an M5. -duders
Mafia Righthand_Man
I haven't been in a lot of BMW's or Mercedes' but I personally think Mercedes cars are more comfortable and I generally like their looks better. They might not be considered fast cars like a BMW, but I don't care much for speed as I do about being comfortable while driving. Not to say I don't like BMW's though. I like old Beamers from the 80's, they're nice cars.
LuvVerde
Classic rivalries ... The WRX Sti vs. The Evo I own and evo 9 and in my opinion ... EVO > Subaru (Dont have time to get into details but I'll be back soon)

EVO > Subaru (Dont have time to get into details but I'll be back soon) Forgive me for saying so, but you're just biased then, since you own one of them But yeah, after seeing the Evo (8 wasn't it?) keeping up with a Lambo, i'd probably pick one of those. Technical Difficulty
BMW wins. I've had bad experience with Mercedes. Plus, Mercedes is just a little too luxurious. The BMW's are slightly less luxurious, but just enough for liking.
Reincarnated
BMW. Bmw's engines are way to efficent. the McLaren F1 has a bmw engine. If any of you have even seen the 850i its a outdated model so its not right to compare that. What about the Ms? The M3 CSL is very impressive even though its only a V6. And listen, BMW is smart even to know not to spend tons of money on a super car (that may be sold to only a few buyers) in comparison to selling a soild fast car that is remotely affordable and is worth the money. And please, the M5 is in a class of its own. For only a V8/V10, its amazing. Not to mention it can beat quite a few super cars aswell..
Duders
Don't M3s have inline sixes? Seems like the new 3 series look alot worse than the older model. I was never really a fan of the M5 styline either... I would take a CLS over an M5 any day. -duders
EvilPenguin
BMW's current rivalry seems to the rest of the automobile industry. BMW vehicles consistently set the benchmark for their class and while they may not stand out for one thing in particular, the cars that come from Bovaria's premiere engineers and designers offer a complete package defined by excellence. Now I just wish they'd be less fancy, quite a bit lighter, and an ickle bit less expensive. At this rate, I won't be able to afford a 330Ci. ;(
