Xyzar
riccbhard
I would also say that the drive could be infact dead, but it's also a possibility that the communications (IDE probably) cable has came loose from the back of the drive inside the computer. Yeah that's what I was thinking. The data transfer and the power are seperate cables that connect to your DVD-ROM. You definately have power (read: The power is connected) but you don't have data transfer (read: check the IDE cable).
Xyzar

(note that i'm on a tight budget..) --> I personally highly reccomend Lite-On. I've owned roughly 6 of their drives in the last few years, and none have failed me yet. I just have a lot since I have too many computers. Sony drives are basically rebranded Lite-On drives, and are good, but tend to be expensive. NEC has an excellent reputation, as does Samsung, so they might be worth looking into.
anus
Xyzar, I recommend Samsung drives, they make their drives very strong and they deliver good performance for the money. Edited January 3, 2006 by Warlord.
Xyzar
:edit: ok, wtf? i deïnstalled Alcohol 120% (image mounting prog) to check it may that was causing probs, i rebooted, and now the player isn't showing up anywhere. it's just not there. also, it's nowhere to been seen in the device manager :edit 2: jumpered the HDD to slave, the DVD drive t master, booted, "found new hardware!", DVD drive installed.. now i'll wait and see hwta happens after a while... :\ Edited January 3, 2006 by Xyzar

Plus, imo there's something wrong with the IDE cable you connect your optical drives to, otherwise I don't think they'll be doing stuff like this. Rocketkiller
Do you connect the hard drive and dvd drive with the same cable? If you do, then that could be your problem.
Black-hawk
Here's a stupid suggestion, format? I had a similar problem with the DVD drive not appearing or working. After messing with the cables, nothing. I then formatted, worked like a charm.
Xyzar
