Is it possible to make the game to continue to run/play while i alt-tab out?

Yes, it will probably pause itself but you probably want to do that anyway.

 

Edit: I should probably add that unless you have another program running at the same time you might have to press ALT+TAB a couple of times for it to work, but at least this process is more reliable than it was with GTAIII and Vice City.

Be careful, though, the game (at least on my computer) likes to freeze up the computer when you do that. So unless you're doing something important to playing the game (like when I did "Farewell my Love" by using the GTA Control Center to teleport myself from one checkpoint to another) I would avoid doing it, unless you save right before doing it, or have not made any progress that's important to you since your last save. Like if you're using an online map to find tags or horseshoes or something, I'd save before doing alt-tab to consult the map.

 

I've heard that it's a little less susceptible to freezing if you go to the pause screen first, but I can't really tell.

If you have enough memory on your comp, it shouldn't be any problem Alt-Tab out of the game without the game freezing up your comp. Alternatively, you could also use the "Window" key to go back to the desktop.

no i dont think the game will continue to run. You can minimize the game but the game will 'pause'

I found I have to be at a game menu screen before I can alt/tab out...if not the screen goes nuts and the cursor locks up in the upper left corner...
