Crokey
The general concensus is that it was great up to and including series 6 but series 7 was a pile of GELF poo, but series 8 kinda redeemed itself after series 7, but still never got back the certain jai ne ca smeg. For me the big dissapointment was that ok they brought back Kochanski (Which Rob Grant didn't want to do hence him and Doug Naylor kind of fell out about, hence Doug writing the series from then on) but it wasn't Clare Grogan, my childhood crush girl so that kinda tipped it for me. Although having watched series 7 on DVD, it wasn't that bad, it's just the general feel of the series spoiled it, like the changing over to filmatic lighting but with Digital Film which gave it that over-polished look and the special effects weren't that good compared to the much superior traditional models of previous seasons. Then we get to series 8 and Red Dwarf wasn't the lovable squashed up pile nuts and bolts complete with embedded metor in the side and it turned into a long polished version which Red Dwarf just shouldn't be. So if you want to catch up on Red Dwarf but aren't a total Dwarfer like me then get series 1-6.

The only people who ever fell out were Craig and Chris, and that was only through the first few series, but over time it all eased, whilst at the same time making their on-screen relationship more believable
ghost of delete key
Mind you, I'm speaking from an American standpoint, but I've never been thoroughly impressed with RD. Not that it isn't good, but I see it as a blatant ripoff of Quark, starring Richard Benjamin... The show only made it to eight eps, and the network cancelled it- presumably burning the prints, as the ratings dipped below sea level. RD was basically the same plot etc., substitute mining ship for Quark's space garbagetruck. RD Showed up 10 years after Quark, so I guess the world wasn't ready yet ... Anyway RD was much more involved, obviously, running about 10 years (?) But meh, all the popular BBC comedies were always found here on PBS, not so much now as in the past. Back then I was more a fan of stuff like Fawlty Towers and The Good Life (Good Neighbors in the US). Goofy, huh? WF the Hobgoblin
Was thinking of making a new one but found this ancient topic and decided to dredge it up. So any brits just watch Red Dwarf X on Dave? I'd just powered through the whole series again over the last two weeks in preperation. The brand new episode was pretty good I thought, glad to have it back. Edited October 4, 2012 by WF the Hobgoblin

Looks like the Dave website has had a temporary meltdown. We're guessing there's been a big Red Dwarf-related rush and our servers can't cope. Well, they're only human. And yes, we know we shouldn't have bought those Matrix-style human servers but they look sooooo cute curled up in their little pods! We reckon if you cross your fingers, concentrate really hard about how you love and miss us and, perhaps most importantly, give it a couple of minutes or so, the Dave site will magically reappear and it'll be like none of this ever happened. And it'll just be our little secret. Between the two of us. And nobody else. Right? Right. never has a notice saying that the video can't be played made me laugh so much finally in Edited October 4, 2012 by NateShaw92
WF the Hobgoblin
Didn't even know Dave had an on-demand service. It's also repeated on Dave in about an hour, as well as over the next few days.
Mr Rabbit
good to have it back, that was great. I wonder whether howie rimmer was a hologram for 3million years as well if so - possible spinoff, doubt it though Edited October 4, 2012 by NateShaw92
RARusk
In addition to being a long time G-Fan I am also a Dwarfer. I'm glad that they finally started showing Series X, I'm guessing "Back to Earth" was Series IX, but I am going to keep myself in suspense and wait for the series to hit stateside in DVD form and watch all of the episodes in one go. Next spring maybe? "One day I will think of this as just another job. After all, this is what I do."
Robinski
Just caught it, and to me surprise, it wasn't terrible! I'm a massive RD fan, but I'm sure most of us can say that everything from after roughly season 6 was pretty bad compared to the rest. The new episode felt a lot like the earlier stuff I think. The lion's share of the gags were pretty predictable, but I still laughed at the payoffs despite seeing it coming. The moose joke had me rolling. The only thing is, they all look so... old *sigh*

.2D
Yeah, it's still a shame to see them all ageing though. But I'd been loving the new episodes. Really looking forward to tonight's.
Robinski
The only thing is, they all look so... old *sigh* well we can't do anything about that Oh I know that, I just thought I'd point out how sad it makes me. There's just something a little depressing about suddenly seeing a clearly 48 year old Lister acting like he's still twenty five (because canonically, he is). I'm happy they did it, a more pensive and world weary crew would make a much less entertaining sitcom, but it's certainly jarring. I can only imagine what it'll be like if I watch the series' back in full in like 10 years time. Going to a gig tonight so I won't catch this one on broadcast (haven't seen one "live", as it were, yet). Still can't wait to see what it brings. Going to a gig tonight so I won't catch this one on broadcast (haven't seen one "live", as it were, yet). Still can't wait to see what it brings. it makes me sad to see danny john jules and craig charles look that old, less noticable with chris barrie and he suits it and robert llwellyn wears a mask for the kryten head so not noticable. i think canonically he is 40's cos time passed on over the 8 series, about 6 years (not counting stasis) so he would be early 30s and they mentioned in back to earth that they had been floating aimlessly for years (rimmer said this, and it is a new rimmer, not our old rimmer, he went off to be ace rimmer, so years counting from the end of season 8) so canonically lister will be in his 40's, but I think they don't mention his age deliberately, pretty sure they did not mention his age. Same with the cat (that is depressing he is way less energetic, i'll admit that, no more of that weird shuffle walk he did while screaming, he tried it in back to earth but it failed) anyway they can explain lister looking 50 and being 30 (if that is indeed canon) by constant curries and beer, and acting like he is 25 - well because he is an immature smeghead (I say that with maximum love) so far I like this series, not classic but good. I just rewatched all the 8 over the last week, can't believe it was 13 years since a full series when they brought it back (back to earth was a special strictly speaking) 13 years - manzing to think that back then I did not eat vindaloo (did not get eating vindaloo off lister, that is a happy coincidence), s-club were big and popular, as were the spice girls, Muse were jsut starting, tony blair was running things. To be honest the only thing that has stayed the same is the monarch. hell i did not even eat vindaloo last time i watched the 8 series through, which was sometime after back to earth. incidently that was about the time I noticed chocolate covered pretzels disappeared off supermarket shelves, KP used to do em, they came back recently coincidence? yes. odd to think it has been on-off for 23 years. I've not even been alive that long, and according to episilon, isn't that like 1/4 of the earth's lifetime Edited October 22, 2012 by NateShaw92
