In Which We Serve

The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp

Way To The Stars

Passport To Pimlico

Went The Day Well

All the best British War Films you could ever watch....especially seeing as all of them (apart from Pimlico and Went The Day Well) were made during WW2 and thus were more affected by nthat socio-historical context

It Happened Here and the recent German film about Hitler's last days in his bunker are good as well

My favorites would be...

1. Saving Private Ryan

2. Full Metal Jacket

3. The Longest Day

4. Enemy at the Gates

5. Band of Brothers

Saving Private Ryan is awesome. I like how they show how the morale of the squad shrinks with every dead ally. But in the end they realize, or at least Edward burns' character realized that Private Ryan was like him, he wanted to go home, but not at the price of abandoning his squad.

I thought that the move glory, based on the American civil war was good, although, it has it's own gory scenes.

I can't stand war movies that are full of American Army pride/propaganda ('We were soldiers' for example. *shudder*)

The best ones are;

• Apocalypse now

• Platoon

• Full metal jacket

Band of Brothers is very good however.

I wholeheartedly agree. I could get into the politics behind it and how terrible it is that most movies show only the "good" side (in the end they win right? Hah, you lost the war).

But this isn't the political discussion tounge.gif

I do really enjoy Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon and Band of Brothers. But also older movies like Patton, Paths Of Glory, The Deer Hunter, All Quiet On The Western Front, Das Boot and The Bridge On The River Kwai.

Gotta love your classics kids.

I hate really dramatic war movies like We Were Soldiers and Pearl Harbor, although Saving Private Ryan was pretty good. The best ones would have to be Full Metal Jacket, Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now. I thought Platoon sucked.

Does Dead Presidents count as a war movie? Only about half of it took place during the Vietnam War.

It was a TV series. But come on, it was produced by spielberg and had a giant budget. I wouldn't be surpised if it started as a movie, but the only way to have it as big as it was, was to have it be 10 hours long.

And sorry that america makes all the good war movies.

My list.

Apocalypse Now

Full Metal Jacket

Das Boot

Platoon

The Deer Hunter

The Thin Red Line

Downfall

Black Hawk Down (a little too AMERICA! granted)

A Bridge Too Far

Battle of Britain

The Longest Day

Patton

Grave of the Fireflies

The Killing Fields

The Big Red One

The Bridge Over the River Kwai

The Pianist

Schindler's List

Stalingrad

Essential viewing for all.

As for non-traditional war movies... i.e. pre-World War 2.

Paths of Glory

Zulu

Braveheart

Ran

Lawrence of Arabia

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

America makes all the good war movies? lol okay. YOUR OPINION IS NOW VOID. Why would you just come out and make such a narrow minded comment like that?

Maybe America is so good as making war movies, because they are so good at going to war.

Couldn't comment on "We were Soldiers"... But I most likely wont rent it if everyone has such a bad opinion on it.

My list would have to be:

Jarhead

Black Hawk Down

Full Metal Jacket

Platoon

Hamburger Hill

The Thin Red Line

Band of Brothers

How could I even forget that one, the DVD is lying six feet away from me!

I like your list a lot widow, I've seen most of the movies on it with the exception of Grave of the Fireflies.

Apocalypse Now

Jarhead

Black Hawk Down

Saving Private Ryan

Band of Brothers

Over There (not technically a movie, but a series like Band of Brothers)

Platoon

Full Metal Jacket

Rules of Engagement (wasn't bad at all)

Enemy At The Gates (If you ignore the awkward sex scene)

Three Kings

Yeah, those movies rock.

"We Were Soldiers" left me wondering what the hell I was watching. Hell, "The Marksman" (a direct-to-video piece starring Wesley Snipes) was better than Mel Gibson's POS.

Lawrence of Arabia

I always thought that LoA was some faggy drama about some Brit in the desert, but after I watched it junior year I immediately went out and bought a copy. Definitely one of my favorite movies.

All Quiet on the Western Front

The Trench

A Bridge too Far

Black Hawk Down

Personally I'm not a fan of the glamourised Saving Private Ryan. If you wanna see how war really was watch the Band of Brothers series, especially episodes 6 & 7.

What the f*ck are you talking about "glamourised", they had to do basic training lead by some old army guy before doing any filming, and glamourised would have meant they left the lens filters and sh*t on, making it too bright and happy, given them fake names, and written everything wrong.

But no, they researched the story, gave them the names of real people, and almost all the events were based on fact.

Anyway, nice films.

I'm not saying it to be a gung ho american or anything. I mean look at your list there. How many of those movies aren't american?

I mean come on. I bet if I said brittain makes the best war films you wouldn't say anything like this, but it would be the same type of narrow minded comment.

Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War - the best korean war movie i've ever seen. and it doesnt have any of that "America saved your ass from communism" after taste. made in korea so it has a korean POV, something we're not used to seeing in the US.....a war that america has been involved with but hardly any americans in the film. granted the US did play a huge role in the war but this movie is about the affects the war had on korea, mainly south korea.

America has a huge film industry, they have the budget for big war movies. All other countries can only really do small scale movies, like No Man's Land, which was really great, but it was only set in a field, in a trench for the whole movie.

Downfall was set in a bunker pretty much the whole time, Das Boot was set in a submarine. There was no huge D-Day invasion type scenes. But they're still great non-american films.

In the past though, Britain could make epic war movies with the best of them. Look at Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge on the River Kwai, A Bridge Too Far and The Battle of Britain.

Now those were big budget British war movies.

But at the end of the day, I don't care where the movie comes from, it's all about the quality and if you did say Britain makes the best war movies, I'd probably just think you're a bit delusional.

I'd add Saving Private Ryan, Three Kings, No Man's Land and Band of Brothers (if it counts) to my list, because I forgot about them the first time around.
