You only put it in the game but it dosent change anything else unless it needs to. I dont think the changes they did were so big that they had to change the file where your game is saved. And why cant they make it so you can use your previous saves. From what I understand, which admittedly isn't much in this area, game saves are essentially memory dumps. Because of this, any significant change to the threads running during the "main" game (i.e., when you are not on a mission and thus allowed to save) alters the content of the memory enough to make the save incompatible with a previous version of the game. This is why many SCM mods force you to start a new game even if their changes appear small, and this would be why v2 saves don't work on v1 and vice-versa. That said, I don't think Rockstar expected too many people to buy both v1 and v2 on the same platform, and so it probably wasn't a priority to provide a way to use v1 saves with v2.
