123abc
I have the opportunity to buy a driving complete first gen RX7. It's a stick, and red, and that's about all I know. My friend's uncle bought it for 300 because it didn't run. He ended up fixing it up, and now it's a good car. Now, the hard part is, what should I ask for it? His nephew says 500, which seems like a damn good deal still. Any Input? I did some research, and found out it has the 12A carberated rotary in it, with a solid rear axle. The rear suspension would be a good set up for drag racing, and the engine can be replaced with a turbo 13b. The way it'd work, is in maybe a month, I'd have the money and I'd go pick it up, then store it a few miles away untill I get my Belvedere done. Then fix what ever needs fixing to the mazda, and use it as a winter/mpg car, since the belvedere wouldn't be good for either of them. What do you think? I'll try to find the year out asap, so don't nag me about that. ::rawr::
tuff_luv_capo
Well, you are going to be investing a lot of money into things that will have other things falling apart around them, I know that from experience. Just make sure the car is ready to be run quick. A good way to tell is, imagine driving that car across country. If you don't see that happening, I wouldn't try doing something to it. Juicing a car that isn't over-all able to handle it can really screw some things up, and it speeds the aging process. I'll let my grand-dad type now: Make my son stop stealing my money. 123abc
Well, while I fix up what ever needs to be fixed on the RX7, I'll still have my Belvedere to serve as daily driving. My dad is going to take me to look over the RX7 sometime in the near future, so we'll see then. I just need to know if it's a good. ::rawr::
tuff_luv_capo
Having another car for daily driving helps x5. Just be sure to keep the rx7 covered and run it every once in a while if it just sits being worked on alot. Oh, and for $500, take it. You can always sell it for more to a riceboy who thinks it's god, regardless of condition.
JJHW
Agreed. Buy it, hold on! You say 1st Gen? They're f*cking awesome, definately get it . I thought it was an FC3S, but i it's the one before that it's even cooler man... +FF7F24+
Cran.
Get it. It's a bargin, but just be careful of every little deatil on the car. I agree with Tuff, you can always sell it to a ricerboy for more than it's worth
Trueno_Drifter86
Buy it.......Now I would if I had the chance to buy one for that price. I mean finding a nice a car for that price that hasn't gone to hell is hard enough but finding a nice RX-7 for that price is almost imposible around here.TRUENO
123abc
I talked to my friend today at school and gave him a list of sh*t to find out about it. Hopefully he'll call him this weekend and find out. ::rawr::
Touge
Hehe, a carby'd 12A wouldn't make a good MPG car man. Rotaries are expensive to run. Not only that, but if you get it, make sure to run it for about 5-10 mins before driving anywhere. The same goes for cooling it down. They aren't the most reliable things on earth either so don't go anywhere you can't get a bus back from. Other than that. BUY IT!!!
123abc
News Update: Found out the engine has an internal seal going bad, and the brakes are shot. My friend's uncle also said he'd give it to me for real cheap....I'm guessing 400 is a good price now? What does everyone else think I should offer? ::rawr::
Touge
That internal seal problem will be the apex seals. What happens is they provide the seal between all 3 chambers of the rotor itself. Over time these things wear out, crack, or whatever, and you start getting low compression among other things like exhaust gas going back through the combustion cycle etc. Rebuilds for a rotary can be quite expensive. And even decent jobs can end up needing to be redone in a year or so. Especially when the engine's a 20+ year-old 12A. It's up to you wether or not you want to buy it. I'd try to knock the price down a bit more. And if you do get it, a rotary engine rebuild is not something you want to attempt at home.
123abc
Well, my plans are to swap a 13b turbo in it, so the 12a is not one of my major concerns... It'll be somewhere between 300-400 bucks. I hope. ::rawr::
JJHW
Yeah, was gonna say, offer $350... +FF7F24+
123abc
Turns out, it's an FC. I just got done talking to him. Here's the list of sh*t he told me. 1986 Mazda RX7 GLX Not running....apex seal gone bad maybe? Dent in right front fender Sunroof He got 26 MPG when it ran Needs brake job, leaks Tire flat He has a second set of mirrors....can you say ebay? Alloy Wheels Says he'd like to get 300 out of it. I could get him to go down for less, but he seems like such a nice guy, I don't wanna take advantage over him. ::rawr::
Touge
A manual FC would be a pretty cool car if you got it running. And painted it.
MindCorrupt
Just some tips from a guy who owns a rotary. Before anything, Rotaries are great; theyre unique in the way they are run and they way they can be tuned for perfomance. If youre mechanically savvy, you can have alot of fun with it. And theyre great to drive. On the note of it not starting. It may not be to do with the seals, could even to do with the spark plugs or if youre getting absolutely nothing from the engine; might even be the alternator gone along with the battery itself. Is it turning over at all or making any funny noises? One possibility is that it needs a complete rebuild, now thats where the dollars are involved. Ask him how long its been since the last rebuild / how many kms the current engine has done? When was the last time he had it running? Just a few things in general you should know: - They drink petrol at a rather quick rate, be prepared for quite a few trips to the servo But if it isnt a daily driver, it shouldnt be that much of a problem. - Everyone thinks that if you own a rotary; you have to rebuild it as often as the sun rises. This isnt true; if you look after it well enough; it'd run into the 200k mark for kms. - If not running right, the turbo setup can be quite money and time consuming, i'd chat with your local rotary guru about the pros and cons of a turbo setup. - Road racing isnt a low budget sport Good luck, a little more info on the car may make it a bit easier to help you out with this kind of thing. Join up with a rotary forum and ask them about these things, you'll find that theyre very friendly and eager to help Good luck
123abc
When I talked to him he said the engine froze up. My only guess and his only guess is that the a-pex seals are shot. Which would make sense to me. ::rawr::
123abc
Good news. I'll have the funds for it in about 2 more weeks, so when I do get the cash, I'll be setting up a date to go see it. And you thought I gave up on it......pff ::rawr::
