BenMillard
It's another Microsoft-style way to get their company into every part of your life and stop you from using the products of their competitors. By using this tracking script on your pages, it doesn't give you detailed statistics about how people are using your website. Google gets to see all the details of where every visitor to your site came from, which page they entered at, which pages they went to, and which page they left from. Basically, it gives them direct access to read your server logs. This isn't a cool freebie from Google. They are using the subscribers as statistics gathering slaves to make Google even more profitable.
Johnno
By using this tracking script on your pages, it doesn't give you detailed statistics about how people are using your website. There are different types of statistic packages. T7 for instance, only logs visits and referers. But there are others on the market that log everything you could imagine. If the statistics this package gives you suits, there's nothing wrong with it. Basically, it gives them direct access to read your server logs. I think you're being just a little paranoid. How could they get access to server logs, when all that you are placing on the page is a function call to log a visit? This isn't a cool freebie from Google. They are using the subscribers as statistics gathering slaves to make Google even more profitable. If that's true, then we are all slaves for using Google Search. It makes them money. That is the whole purpose of a company. If they can get people to subscribe, good for them.

Twistie
I have found this an invaluable resource for any webmaster. So what if google gets to see the stats? Google, though they may have the majority of the search engine market are a quility service which doesn't charge for most of its services. It unlike microsoft supports a free, open-source internet. Any organisation which supports that stuff is an organisation I will patronise. I use Gmail, Google Analytics, Google Base, Google Sitemaps and Google Adsense! I'm afraid Cerbera is right, you're giving them a lot of information about your users, whether you realise it or not. I'm not the world's biggest fan of google anymore, as could be expected, as a public company it's becoming too dominating and too controlling. adam broke it.
