reticulatingsplines
It was morning. One of those very normal mornings where you think somebody's just playing it back from a script. You can almost see the cameraman looking through his eyepiece; the director sitting back (wondering why they don't make a director's chair that tilts); and the Boom operator, off behind a trailer, shagging one of the makeup girls. The sound man can afford to have a quick shag, because there's no sound to be recorded. His skills are not, as yet, required. So, in a method and manner closely resembling the previous morning, and all the mornings that have preceeded it, Night buggers off to wherever it goes. Which, thanks to a clever man who lived several hundred years ago, we now know to be somewhere in Southern China, whereupon it will shock the daylights out of an offduty fish gutter on his way back from the markets. He may indeed comment on it to his wife, who will shake her head and sigh in that method that all long-suffering wives seem so adept at. Back to our slowly unrolling morning scene, where there is also a slight breeze blowing, fairly unsure of where it'll be this afternoon but currently quite content just to remind you it exists through the exertion of gentle pressure. Not at all like those nasty, angry winds that seem quite content to blow over buildings, or worse yet, get you whenever you're trying to light a cigarette. The swathe of grass below is soft and slightly damp thanks to the ubiquitous morning dew. The fresh, washed and ironed sunlight thus glints and sparkles to the eye. Here and there a small hillock presents a bunch of trees, like islands of broccoli standing up in far too much green, glinting cheese sauce. A single bird chirps, and the Boom operator has to quickly write down his phone number for a dishevelled and not at all impressed makeup girl. And so, the majesty and beauty of nature is presented. If you're a fan of gods, you could certainly say that he or she got something right today. Everything is almost perfect, excepting of course for the makeup girls' makeup, which your god may not hold with anyway. Indeed, it is a very average morning, but one in which nothing major has had the misfortune of happening. Yet. There was an ominious, deep drum beat for that bit, also. Sportingly, Fate allows this quiet scene a moment to breathe deep and be thankful before obliterating it with a twenty megaton nuclear weapon. After which, there isn't much left to thank Fate's sportsmanlike manner, so it also buggers off to Southern China, where our fish gutter has just found out his wife leaves the bones in on purpose. --- Chipped out of the solid white pixels of Notepad. Also, thank you for reading. --- It's entirely likely that I'll add to this shortly. Just thought I'd see what people thought of it as a bit of an introduction. Kanney
I'll admit i read it quickly, but it is nice and very descriptive. Good job.
Goodfella.
I quickly read through it the first time, but it intreagued me and I took it slow the second. It's actually a very nice piece of work, I liked the way you described the breeze and the thing with the fish gutter. Small nit pick being the excessive (okay, twice) use of "buggers off". Webbie
Well, the first thing I have to say is that after reading this I've added another word to my dictionary: ubiquitous. I read through it slowly to fully understand everything. It's great as of right now. Vocabulary is great. Imagery is great. You set the mood and the scene as flawless as I could imagine. All the words flow together real well. Best of all, the content up until this point is also very good. Nicely written; great job.
