DJDeez
Do you want to risk damaging your cpu or do you want to wait until you can get yourself some decent thermal grease? I'd suggest Arctic Silver 5 or Arctic Silver ceramique.
vALKYR
toothpaste? Get AS5. It's the best stuff around. If you don't know how to apply, ask here 'gain.
Majestic
yeah, besides vaseline + toothpaste, you can also use diaper rash cream. http://www.overclockers.com/tips1214/
iamdigitalman
that silver stuff is too damn expensive. Radio Shack sells some great silicone based thermal compound, $1.99. Trust me, thats some good sh*t. AMF 4ever. -digital

Trust me, thats some good sh*t. AMF 4ever. -digital Arctic Silver 5 isn't too expensive. Think about it, $6 for 3.5gram can do about 25 AMD Duron/Thurnderbird/XP (small) CPUs or about 10 AMD 64's or large Intel's. It's not like the crap that comes with a new heatsink where you smear on a buttload of it and then hope you got enough on there. With AS5 you just about 1/2 grain of rice worth for smal CPUs or full size grain of rice for the large PCUs, and you don't need much more than a full size grain on the heatsink period. It goes a long long way. Besides all of that, of most of the thermal compounds that say they have silver in them Arctic Silver really does. Plus it does much better cooling than most any thermal paste. That article that Majestic posted even says it's not a permanent solution. No offense, but after what I've seen from many of the people around here, trust me when I say just go get some proper thermal compound whether it be some cheap a** crap or something well worth your money. lesfleanut
Just cut a tomato in half and zippie-tie it to the mobo, no HSF or paste required.
Saggy
Quick question about AS5. Can you get it on Newegg? My town blows, and doesn't have many computer shops.
