tommyalma
First off, I found this out on my own because I'm a curious dude. OK, so you get the Speeder (boat) and head to the north point of Staunton Island. The ferry station is where one-armed Phil's place is in GTA3. Also like in GTA3, there is a pipeline in the water preventing you from cruising over to SSV (that's Shoreside Vale to newbs). Still on the Staunton side of the pipeline, back the Speeder up to the mountain, hit the northernmost shore at top speed, and get your boat on land. Here's the boring part. Push the boat off the west side of the peninsula, preferably down the ramp that leads in the water. Due to the wonderfully accurate analog nub, this only took me twenty minutes. Then get in your boat and head to the SSV shore. I don't know when the magic happened. But I grabbed a car and headed to the lift bridge. Ding ding ding! It was working. So I drove back over the bridge to Staunton. I did this just after getting to Staunton Island, before even doing Making Toni. I haven't even started teh Donald Love missions. The barriers at the bridge entrance on Staunton are still up. I have no save point on SSV. There has been nothing in any mission to direct me to SSV. And if I die on SSV, I go back to Staunton. But the bridge is working, and I can go to SSV any time I want! Pretty cool, huh?
SI MoViE StAr
That seems a little complex just to go to SSV. Shorseide is pretty useless (and boring IMO ) unlike GTA3. GTA3 for some reason just made SSV seem a little bit more useful.

How many people are "fans" of Blue Hell? If nothing else, here's some weird thing you can do to get a weird result ... and at least have a shot at getting all the hidden packages early. edisoncarter
Well let me congratulate you for getting to SSV early without cheats! You may be the first one to do it. I never would have guessed it would enable the bridge from then on. That actually makes it more useful since you can get back any time you want. It'll be handy for using the airport. edisoncarter
It's good for wing surfing. You can jump on the wing of a plane and run along with it. I was able to get to SSV, but the bridge didn't come down for me. I hit my speeder into the dirt just to the left of ramp where the ferries dock. I got almost all the way over and landed on the guard rail of the North-South ramp on the other side, then I got really lucky and grinded along the whole length of the guard rail like a skateboarder all the way into the water. Didn't even have to get out and push. This was on my second attempt. On the first try, it got all hung up on a light post and then some post in the middle of the road, and then the truck I was pushing it with blew up. But when I made my way around to the bridge, it didn't come down for me.
Demarest
Demarest strolls in by invitation I very distinctly remember a thread by a guy who had GTA3 for PS2 and therefore did not have access to all the best mods/trainers, etc. He had logged dozens of hours getting to SSV early this same way and even took it a step further, trying to push the boat here and there just for the sake of saying he had his Speeder at those spots. I remember him saying he'd have to occassionally hop in the driver's seat and use the health cheat just to keep it from being destroyed from all the scraping. Never enabled the bridge though. I haven't looked at the code for the game yet, but I'm guessing it would be just a glitch. They've always been pretty good about mission rewards being arranged properly and the like. GTA3Freak-2001
Hmm ok I tried it but the bridge failed to lower for me, I actually managed to jump straight over the ferry dock to get to the other side without any need for pushing the speeder. It is pretty obvious, though, so I'm sure a lot of people thought of it. The fact that the lift bridge can be activated is new, however. In GTA3 the only point was to get a Dodo early and use it to go back and forward between the Shoreside and Staunton. It is pretty obvious, though, so I'm sure a lot of people thought of it. That's true. I remember reading about someone getting a boat up to Phil's in GTA3 but was never able to do it myself. FYI, the bridge is still working for me, and I'm up to 79 hidden packages, but SSV is still blacked-out on my map.
K^2
It is actually very simple. You just have to find the right place to get onto island, and then find some big vehicle to push the boat. You can do it on foot, but it takes forever. That and the bridge jumping trick, and you can get to Dodo without beating a single mission. tterbed
I was able to activate the bridge after I started the tourist job by the airport. I failed the mission but when I went back near the bridge the bell noise started and the bridge would go down. This only lasted if I didn't exit the game.
