PS3 won't allow pre-owned games?

PlayStation 3 won’t play used games?

The latest rumor, generated from several patent sites, claims that Sony has secured a patent for a disk technology that prevents the use of used, as well as pirated, software. From the registered patent description:

”A device and method for protection of legitimate software against used software and counterfeit software in recording media… A specific title code is read, and if this title code has been registered, the main unit shifts to a normal operation. If the code has not been registered, verification software is initiated… If matching does not occur, the disk is processed as illegitimate software… Since only titles for which legitimate software has actually been purchased and which have been initially registered in the machine table can be used, resale (so-called used software purchase) after purchase by an end-user becomes practically impossible.”

Does Sony plan to employ this technology in the PlayStation 3? Not likely. If so, PS3 owners would not be able to rent (used) games or borrow their friends’ games—or even purchase used games! Sure, the technology could be used for Blu-Ray movies, but for games? It just won’t go down like that… right?

Joystiq

To summarize, Sony could use this technology in the PS3 so that a retail copy of a game could only be played on the first PS3 it is run on. This means that if you had a sh*tload of games and your PS3 were to die, your pile of games dies with it. It would also mean the death of all rentals, resales, and sharing with your friends.

As this article says though, Sony probably wouldn't be stupid enough to implement such bullsh*t in the PS3, but then again, the whole rootkit fiasco makes me reluctant to assume that they wouldn't have the nerve. Supposedly Ken Kataguri had a hand in inventing this as well, which is quite disturbing, with him being the god of the Playstation and all.

I would expect nothing better from a company obviously run by the world's biggest a&&holes. If they do plan on implementing that technology, then they can frankly just go f*** themselves and jump off a cliff. I'll by a Nintendo Revo. or a 360. Why does the a&&hole company make the best technology?

Really what would be the point if your console screws up with you owning 100 games your screwed if they go through with this I hope to be seeing Sony's chief executive begging on the street for money when no one buys his lame ass console. icon14.gif

I seriously doubt that they'll implement something like that, but with how security conscious some companies are getting it wouldnt suprise me either. I don't rent games but sometimes i'll buy Used Games, as I dont really see the point in buying a full priced game that I might not like when I can pay half the price used. (Like I did with Mortal Kombat Deception and .hack//infection (Which kicks ass I must mention))

If they do implement something which will disallow use of Used Games then they're closing themselves to a large market.

Video stores and the like buy a huge number of game units for rental.

It won't happen. They'd be destroying a sector of the biz...not too mention the business' that sprung up around used games.

What about just borrowing a game from a mate?

More likely is something to protect against pirated games. This can be done.

Forbidding used games from being played is absurd. When the person gives up their game to another person, then that person can no longer play it on their PS2 at any time they wish. They would have to buy another copy or get the old one back. So it is absurd. Preventing pirated games makes more sense, but the price of games is too expensive considering their overall crappiness nowadays.

They won't do it, I'll make sure of that...

Seriously, they do and they're broke.

i gaurantee you absoltuley 100% they won't do it. there are a lot of people who won't buy a game without renting it first, if they take renting out of the picture, their sales would drop.

not to mention they would completely piss off retailers like EB Games.

lol does the PS3 also have a satellite sticking out of it's arse or do you have to go online and register your games so that you cant lend or re-sell them?

Even then your saying that companies like Blockbuster couldnt rent games anymore and I think it's safe to say developers and Sony make a nice proift off them. People pay to rent games that many then go on to buy. All in all this is another thread you've posted with little fact and too much fiction, either your a worried sony fan or a... well I better not go down this road.

Sure, since that will also stop the selling of CD-walkmans, mp3 players, handycams, TVs, Clié's, PC products...

Yeah, they will be broke... bored.gif

That's really stupid if they do that, and if they do, someone will find a way to play a used game(software, hacks, hardware) and eventually spread. Which that also happend with the PS2 bootlegs.

But they better not, or I'll be jumping in the x360

This guy has posted a topic like this before and this is his second one. I can't wait for his third. How reliable is the information he is giving us?

I merely reported on this issue. At no point did I say that the information being presented was true or false, hence the question mark at the end of the topic title.

The simple facts are, this IS worth mentioning, because, in case you didn't see it in the article, there is a patent from which this rumor stems.

And don't make the mistake of assuming that I'm a fanboy of any kind. I personally don't give a god damn what any of these businesses do. I'm just reporting for the sake of awareness.

Um. Just unplug your PS3 from the internet? How would it work without a central backbone to verify anything?

How the hell else is it going to check if the disc has been used before? Don't tell me, super secret write sectors on the disc?

No chance they would do it and even if they did, there would be ways to get around it probably.

That's what I was thinking. Then again, if it used anything we already know of, it wouldn't be a brand new idea to patent, now would it?

Read the patent, it will be using pulse data for an initial verification. So of course that means that the possible "pulse keys" will already be loaded into the flash memory of the PS3.

What is unclear is whether or not Sony plans to allow the "database of pulse data" to be exported to a flash card for example, meaning that if you have a memory card in your first PS3 and it dies, you can simply take you memory card from the first PS3 (which has the encrypted database of games you have purchased) and insert it into your new PS3.

They had made mention of some device whether it be a powder or something else is unclear, that will be erased upon placing the disk in your PS3, after the other verification processes have occurred. They have just added a layer of protection on top of what currently exists, and it will just be a matter of time before the modifications come out, although it may be a bit longer as hackers would have to learn the processor structure and data storage structure.

There is no level of encryption aside from quantum encryption that cannot be beaten.

I was looking at the patent and I think it's from the year 2000. They could have used it on the PSP. From the confusing description, it appears to be talking about burning legitimate CDs as opposed to illegal stuff. Maybe it's for one of their CD/DVD burner products. If they are stupid enough to use that thing for the PS3, I will just buy a Nintendo Revolution or more hopefully a new PC.

Err, this is absolutely unfounded and retarded, at the same time. The only way you could label a disc to work on one system -- fiscal suicide, by the way -- would be to have a blu-ray burner inside the PS3. Not only are those rediculously expensive, it would actually aid those looking to pirate PS3 games as a blu ray burner is -- as stated before -- rediculously expensive.

So basically, there is no way this is true. Quit spreading lies.

Quit spreading lies.

Jesu Fucking Christ, it's not a lie if I never posted this stating that it were true. What is true is that such a patent exists and that such a technolgy is at Sony's disposal, and that alone is worth a mention.

Why so many of you choose to react to such things like goddamn hypersensitve, fanatically-blinded children is beyond reason.

Obviously, no one wants to to be informed if the information isn't squeaky-clean positive and enlightning, so I suppose I'll request this to be closed.

You expect everyone to think like you don't you? Sony has the technology but they are not going to use it. The PS3 is not going to allow customers to burn/copy games or DVD movies.
