Computer Evolution 2.0

Those of us who consider building computer to be a hobby go through new parts on a fairly consistent basis. It's kind've interesting to compare what you have to what you used to have. I remember just 2 years ago I was rocking a 166mhz P1, 64mb of memory and a Matrox MGA Millenium. That thing could play Quake 2, Decent 2, Decent Freespace...Commandos...Red Alert...well you get the general idea.

I didn't know any better either. The most powerful computers I'd been around were those at school, and while I did manage to get Driver installed on one of them, I generally didn't game on them.

Once I got a job and some serious cash together, I built my first rig....and I was addicted from there.

Share the experience and tell us how your rig evolved. Use your own discretion as to what a new "rig" is. I say if it's a new mobo, cpu, and memory, it's a new rig, but it's kind've a tossup.

I'll display my rig's evolution in a moderately easy system...with some backstory for the hell of it.

My First Rig

After my neighbor got a Dell computer, which had a 2.0ghz P4 and a Geforce 4 MX440...well I thought it was the greatest thing in the world since all my craptacular games ran blissfully on it (yes I installed my games on his computer just to see how they ran). So after getting some birthday money together...I got my first rig. $420, it was.

CPU: Athlon XP 2400+

RAM: 256MB Crucial DDR 266 (one DIMM slot refused to work, no matter what memory was put in it)

VIDEO CARD: Integrated Geforce 2 MX ----> Geforce 4 MX440 ----> Radeon 9800 PRO

Motherboard: Asus A7N266-VM

Later in the year, for Christmas, my daddy got me a Radeon 9800 PRO. It kind've felt overpowered considering the staggeringly low amount of memory, but hey.

In the summer, I got the overclocking itch and my motherboard was adamanet about not letting me do it. Also, my 9800 Pro was really getting pissed sitting inside such a crappy system...so it was upgrade time again. I kept the processor and the video card, everything else was outta there.

My Second Rig

CPU: Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.4ghz, 200mhz fsb. OC'ed the sh*t out of it. ----> Athlon XP 2500+ with an overclock. Moderately pleased.

Memory: 512MB Corsair Value Memory, later upgraded to 1GB.

Motherboard: Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe. Seriously, who HASN'T owned one?

Then I splurged...and got what I have now, a 6800 Ultra. My Athlon XP system was really choking it, but I didn't care because dammit I had a 6800 Ultra. I sold the 9800 PRO.

My Third, and Current, Rig

CPU: Athlon 64 3200+ s939

Memory: 1gb OCZ Platinum 2-2-2-5 memory

Motherboard: Abit AV8 3rd eye edition

Video Card: PNY Vergo 6800 Ultra

I also slammed in a 160gb SATA drive to accompany my 60 gigger which I had all the way since the beginning. How it hasn't died yet I dunno.

There you have it. Let 'er rip.

Thats interesting....

I heard from a guy once, he said "You will go poor trying to keep your computer upgraded" and those words are true.

But first off, the first computer my family owned, was back in....maybe 1996? it was super fast...160 something Mhz CPU, 64mb? ram, 1.5Gb HDD, it was smoking fast, i know... for a whopping $3,000, give or take a few hundred....(not too sure i was like 8 Years at the time)

But then we got a new one that was built by me bro. it just died recently sad.gif but a nice computer indeed

1.2 Ghz AMD CPU

512Mb Ram

40Gb HDD

onboard sound

Geforce 5200 64mb gfx

And then i wanted my own computer, so a friend donated one

500Mhz AMD cpu

128mb Ram

onboard sound/video

30Gb Hdd

(Hey! it was free... rah.gif )

And then i junked that a while back and bought another new one which i am happy with

AMD XP 3200+ @ 2.2Ghz

1GB pc3200 RAM

160GB Samsung HDD

Asus A7V8X-LA mobo

Soundblaster Live! 7.1 with 7.1 speakers

Dell 17 CRT monitor

Nvidia 5500 128mb (need upgrade.)

i ran out of money so yeah i havent gotten into the PCI X stuff yet with the AMD 64's.

I started off with a P1 140mhz PC with 16mb of ram and a 2 gig HDD, I used that 2 years ago to post on here. I knew it was crap but I didn't know how bad it really was until we upgraded to a Dell Dimension 2600 (P4 2.6ghz, 512mb ram, 80gig HDD etc).

Because I was used to my old PC I didn't know much about newer specs, so I thought this was great until I realised that the graphics card I had bought for it couldn't be used because it had no AGP slot.

Then I found out that if I wanted a new motherboard I'd need a new case, power supply and even keyboard and mouse. So after 2 months of just buying a new PC worth $2,000 I had to spend another $500 to put a low end graphics card in it. It all worked out because in the end I sold the Dell stuff I replaced for more than it cost me to buy the better parts.

Now I've got the following:

Sony 17" LCD

Altec Lansing Speakers

Antec Super Lanboy Case

Gigabyte Motherboard

P4 2.66ghz (from the dell)

2x 256mb Dell Ram

9600XT Gexcube Graphics Card

120gig Seagate HDD (Dell one was stolen suicidal.gif )

LG 8x DVD Burner

TEAC CD Writer/ DVD Reader

I started off with a 386, 2 MB RAM, that's all I remember. Then I got a Pentium 200 MMX, with a VooDoo 3 and 32 MB RAM. My third rig was an AMD 1 GHz, it was a Fujitsu Siemens with everything built in, so I forgot about the specs. My current rig can be found here.

Well, this is kinda different, but I think it fits in.

Bought in Early 2004.

CPU: Pentium 4 3.2GHz (sk478, 1mb cache)

Mobo: Gigabyte 8IPE1000-G

RAM: 1GB PC3200 Dual Channel (2x512)

Monitor: 17" Benq FP767 (16ms)

Graphics: ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB DDR2 > S3 Savage4/Pro 16MB PCI > Nvidia fx5200 128mb AGP 8x > ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB DDR2

Here's the story; One day I was f*cking around with my BIOS settings, and I restarted. The f*cking video didn't work. I thought I messed something up in video settings. So we send it back to the local computer shop where we got it built. They found it that a capacitor blew, and lucky enough the whole computer was under warranty still, along with the 9800 pro (Saphire 1 year warranty). So we got the computer back. The display strugulled with having 1280x1024x16 on the desktop.

So in the end, for $60AU we bought a fx5200 from my dad's friend (He just got a 9800XT). So I had to wait 4 weeks for the 9800 pro to come back, as it was xmas holidays and my computer shop shut down for the holidays.

Well, my VERY first pc was a commodore 64.... but let's jump forward a bit...

About 2 1/2 years ago, I had been out of the PC scene forever and a day. Even though it was in my blood, I had just been doing other things, mainly LIFE. Then I got the urge to build a PC again (at the time I had no computer as I sold my previous one... strange huh?). So it all started out with this:

Mobo: MSI Socket A

CPU: AMD Athlon 2400+

Memory: 512 megs of cheap DDR-333

Video card: GeForce 5200 Ultra

Hard Drive: 80 gig IDE-100

Monitor: E-Machines 15" CRT

Then I got power hungry... REALLY power hungry. Here's the list:

MoBo: MSI socket A ---> Chaintech VNF3-250 Socket 754---> Asus A8V Deluxe Socket 939 ---> Asus A8N SLI deluxe

CPU: Athlon 2400+ ---> Athlon 64 3000+ ----> Athlon FX-53 ---> Athlon FX-55

Memory: Crap -----------> Better Crap ---------> PQI Turbo Platinum 1 gig 2x512 @ 2-2-2-5

Video Card: 5200 Ultra ---> Nvidia 6800 8xAGP -----> Dual 6800 Ultras, SLI'd

Hard Drive: 80 gig hitachi ---> 500 gigs total Hitachi ---> Quad 250 gig Hitachi's (first terrabyte!)

Monitor (embarrasing) 15" CRT ---------------------------------------------> Hyundai L90D+ 8ms response rate 19" LCD

So that was then... And now, here's my current rig (current upgrade from last setup there):

MoBo: eVGA K8-NF41

CPU: Amd Athlon 64 X2 4800+

Memory: 2 gigs PQI Turbo Platinum

Video Card: 2x eVGA Nvidia 7800GTX's @ 509/1.3

Hard Drives: 4x Hitachi Deskstar 500 gig SATA II drives (2 terrabytes! w00t!)

Monitor: Hyundai L90D+ flatpanel @ 19" (considering getting another one)

Snip.

Nice bump, at least its on topic.

First Rig:

150Mhz Cyrix 6x86

128Mb SDRAM

Tseng Labs 4Mb Graphics Card

20x CD drive

Quantam Fireball 20Gb Hard Drive

Thats all I can remember, ran Dailup awesomely xD

Second rig:

Athlon XP 2600+

ASUS motherboard with VIA chipset, That Died, got RMA'd, then THAT one died, Got a ASUS one with a SiS chipset, which died, and now it has a Axper motherboard (Gigabyte subbrand)

256Mb Ram > 1Gb Ram

Intergrated on all motherboards except the axper, and half way through the SiS motherboard, i got a 6800GS

ASUS Lite On CD burner > LG DVD Burner

Crappy Beige case > Coolermaster Centurion 5

WD 80Gb Hard Drive, Added 200Gb Seagate Hard Drive, then added another 80Gb Seagate hard drive.

350w PSU > 400w PSU > 500w PSU that can actually power my parts well enough NOT to cause errors.

Then I got a new mobo and CPU

Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 (Overclocked to 2.8Ghz currently)

ASrock 4coredual SATA2 (Need to get a new one, this one hates using a PCIe Graphics Card...)

GeForce 6800GS AGP > ATi x1600Pro PCIe

1Gb DDR400 Ram > 2Gb Crucial Ballistix Tracer PC2-6400 CL4

LG DVD Burner

Cooler Master Centurion 5 (Maybe getting a Cosmos S or Lian Li Rocketfish soon)

Same Hard Drives

500w PSU (Soon to be 700w OCZ one hopefully)

By eck we certainly do evolve our computers.

Anywhoo my first computer I can't remember the year, what a power house that was.

Intel Pentium 2 233mhz

64MB Ram

Crappy graphics (forgot which)

Crappy HD cant remember the size.

POS case

15" CRT

Windows 95

That lasted a while until we got the second rig (we didn't game much until recently)

AMD Athlon 1800 XP + 1.7ghz.

512MB Ram

nVidia Geforce 2 64MB Ti

40GB Maxtor HDD

Creative SoundBlaster Live!

Cambridge Sound works 4.1 System

17" Mitibushi Dimond Max that kicked arse.

Mesh Branded Case

After a while the processor fried itself, so that was changed to an Athlon 2000 XP, and the Ram upped to 1GB, case also changes to one picked up at pc world. The case kicked arse, huge ass case, space for 4 fans + 5 5/12 bays, and 2 3/14 bays. Also the HD started dying, so that was changed to a 120GB WD Caviar, and changed the graphics card to a nVidia geforce 6200 256MB.

AMD Athlon 1800 XP + 2.2hz.

1GB Ram

nVidia Geforce 6200 256MB

120GB WD Caviar HDD

Creative SoundBlaster Live!

Cambridge Sound works 4.1 System

PC World Case

In the end it was

My dad wanted his own rig as we started gaming, so in comes the 3rd rig.

AMD Athlon 2400 XP + 2.2Ghz

512MD Ram

nVidia Geforce 4 mx

40GB Seagate HDD

Time Branded Case

This didnt change much, except the graphics card died, was replaced with a nvidia geforce 6600 256MB. And added a creative soundblaster live 24bit with cretive inspire 5.1 speakers.

Then my sister wanted a pc, so she got bought some Packard Bell machine.

Intel Celeron 2.ghz

256MB Ram

On Board Graphics

On Board Sound

normal 2 channel speakers

My dad decided that he needed to upgrad his pc, so we more or less rebuilt it.

Intel core 2 duo E3000?? 1.8ghz

2GB DDR2 Ram

Asrock Mobo

nvidia geforce 6600 256MB

creative sound blaster live 24!

Time branded case.

It started over heating due to lack of cooling, so we got a better case, then that case was upgraded to one from maplin an iCute case. The graphics card has been changed to a nvidia 8800GT 512MB, and the motherboard to a gigabyte P35 DS3

Intel core 2 duo E3000?? 1.8ghz

2GB DDR2 Ram

gigabyte p35 ds3

nvidia geforce 8880GT 512MB

creative sound blaster live 24!

Maplin iCute case.

Out of the old spare parts, I built myself a test/server machine, whilst replacing some of the older parts in mine from the ones in my dads. At the time this was built we didnt have the 8800GT so I ordered a nvidia fx5200 for it, since it was to be used for uni programming.

Server/Test machine

Athlon 2000XP + 1.7ghz

512MB Ram

nVidia geforce fx5200 128MB.

40GB HDD

My machine

Athlon 2400XP + 2.2ghz

1GB DDR Ram

nvidia geforce 6200 256MB

120GB WD Caviar HDD

Creative SoundBlaster Live!

Cambridge Sound works 4.1 System

PC World Case

Then my sisters boyfriend, upgraded her machine, or rather rebuilt it.

AMD Athlon 64

1GB Ram

nvidia geforce 7300

We then added 2GB ram to it when we rebuilt my machine.

Now finally I got mine upgraded, when the student loan came through!

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66Ghz

Asus I31 Mobo.

2GB DDR2 OCZ Ram

nVidia geforce 8800GT

250GB SATA II HD

Creative sound blaster live!

4.1 Sound system

PC World case.

Since then been some minor tweaks to the system, the sound card is now a Creative X-FI fata1ly with Front drive, changed the surround sound to Logicteck X540 5.1, and bought another 2GB ram that doesnt work, because I need to change the sh*tty asus mobo. I'm going to change that to a gigabtye p35 ds3.

So now we're left with this.

My Machine

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66Ghz

Asus I31 Mobo.

2GB DDR2 OCZ Ram

nVidia geforce 8800GT

My Server/Test Machine

Athlon XP 2400 + 2.2Ghz

1GB Ram

nvidia 6600 256MB

2 X 40GB

1 X 120GB

Server/Test machine is connected to 15" monitor / keyboard and mouse via KVM switch.

Dads machine

Intel Core 2 Duo E3000? 1.8ghz

Oh I also sport a 12" iBook G4, 512MB Ram, 1.6ghz power pc processor.

Alot of changing over the years, but to keep up to date you've got to, lol.

I'm still rocking the Toshiba laptop I got 5 years ago. It was/is my first computer, and wasn't too bad for it's time. Too bad it's a piece of sh*t now.

Intel 1.3Ghz Celeron

40GB HDD

256MB RAM

And let's not forget the 8MB on-board graphics

Thank god I'll be getting a new laptop when I go to college next year.
