SteakPhish
Those of us who consider building computer to be a hobby go through new parts on a fairly consistent basis. It's kind've interesting to compare what you have to what you used to have. I remember just 2 years ago I was rocking a 166mhz P1, 64mb of memory and a Matrox MGA Millenium. That thing could play Quake 2, Decent 2, Decent Freespace...Commandos...Red Alert...well you get the general idea. I didn't know any better either. The most powerful computers I'd been around were those at school, and while I did manage to get Driver installed on one of them, I generally didn't game on them. Once I got a job and some serious cash together, I built my first rig....and I was addicted from there. Share the experience and tell us how your rig evolved. Use your own discretion as to what a new "rig" is. I say if it's a new mobo, cpu, and memory, it's a new rig, but it's kind've a tossup. I'll display my rig's evolution in a moderately easy system...with some backstory for the hell of it. My First Rig After my neighbor got a Dell computer, which had a 2.0ghz P4 and a Geforce 4 MX440...well I thought it was the greatest thing in the world since all my craptacular games ran blissfully on it (yes I installed my games on his computer just to see how they ran). So after getting some birthday money together...I got my first rig. $420, it was. CPU: Athlon XP 2400+ RAM: 256MB Crucial DDR 266 (one DIMM slot refused to work, no matter what memory was put in it) VIDEO CARD: Integrated Geforce 2 MX ----> Geforce 4 MX440 ----> Radeon 9800 PRO Motherboard: Asus A7N266-VM Later in the year, for Christmas, my daddy got me a Radeon 9800 PRO. It kind've felt overpowered considering the staggeringly low amount of memory, but hey. In the summer, I got the overclocking itch and my motherboard was adamanet about not letting me do it. Also, my 9800 Pro was really getting pissed sitting inside such a crappy system...so it was upgrade time again. I kept the processor and the video card, everything else was outta there. My Second Rig CPU: Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.4ghz, 200mhz fsb. OC'ed the sh*t out of it. ----> Athlon XP 2500+ with an overclock. Moderately pleased. Memory: 512MB Corsair Value Memory, later upgraded to 1GB. Motherboard: Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe. Seriously, who HASN'T owned one? Then I splurged...and got what I have now, a 6800 Ultra. My Athlon XP system was really choking it, but I didn't care because dammit I had a 6800 Ultra. I sold the 9800 PRO. My Third, and Current, Rig CPU: Athlon 64 3200+ s939 Memory: 1gb OCZ Platinum 2-2-2-5 memory Motherboard: Abit AV8 3rd eye edition Video Card: PNY Vergo 6800 Ultra I also slammed in a 160gb SATA drive to accompany my 60 gigger which I had all the way since the beginning. How it hasn't died yet I dunno. There you have it. Let 'er rip.
Forfit
Thats interesting.... I heard from a guy once, he said "You will go poor trying to keep your computer upgraded" and those words are true. But first off, the first computer my family owned, was back in....maybe 1996? it was super fast...160 something Mhz CPU, 64mb? ram, 1.5Gb HDD, it was smoking fast, i know... for a whopping $3,000, give or take a few hundred....(not too sure i was like 8 Years at the time) But then we got a new one that was built by me bro. it just died recently but a nice computer indeed 1.2 Ghz AMD CPU 512Mb Ram 40Gb HDD onboard sound Geforce 5200 64mb gfx And then i wanted my own computer, so a friend donated one 500Mhz AMD cpu 128mb Ram onboard sound/video 30Gb Hdd (Hey! it was free... ) And then i junked that a while back and bought another new one which i am happy with AMD XP 3200+ @ 2.2Ghz 1GB pc3200 RAM 160GB Samsung HDD Asus A7V8X-LA mobo Soundblaster Live! 7.1 with 7.1 speakers Dell 17 CRT monitor Nvidia 5500 128mb (need upgrade.) i ran out of money so yeah i havent gotten into the PCI X stuff yet with the AMD 64's. Sutto
I started off with a P1 140mhz PC with 16mb of ram and a 2 gig HDD, I used that 2 years ago to post on here. I knew it was crap but I didn't know how bad it really was until we upgraded to a Dell Dimension 2600 (P4 2.6ghz, 512mb ram, 80gig HDD etc). Because I was used to my old PC I didn't know much about newer specs, so I thought this was great until I realised that the graphics card I had bought for it couldn't be used because it had no AGP slot. Then I found out that if I wanted a new motherboard I'd need a new case, power supply and even keyboard and mouse. So after 2 months of just buying a new PC worth $2,000 I had to spend another $500 to put a low end graphics card in it. It all worked out because in the end I sold the Dell stuff I replaced for more than it cost me to buy the better parts. Now I've got the following: Sony 17" LCD Altec Lansing Speakers Antec Super Lanboy Case Gigabyte Motherboard P4 2.66ghz (from the dell) 2x 256mb Dell Ram 9600XT Gexcube Graphics Card 120gig Seagate HDD (Dell one was stolen ) LG 8x DVD Burner TEAC CD Writer/ DVD Reader
DJDeez
I started off with a 386, 2 MB RAM, that's all I remember. Then I got a Pentium 200 MMX, with a VooDoo 3 and 32 MB RAM. My third rig was an AMD 1 GHz, it was a Fujitsu Siemens with everything built in, so I forgot about the specs. My current rig can be found here. Cran.
Well, this is kinda different, but I think it fits in. Bought in Early 2004. CPU: Pentium 4 3.2GHz (sk478, 1mb cache) Mobo: Gigabyte 8IPE1000-G RAM: 1GB PC3200 Dual Channel (2x512) Monitor: 17" Benq FP767 (16ms) Graphics: ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB DDR2 > S3 Savage4/Pro 16MB PCI > Nvidia fx5200 128mb AGP 8x > ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB DDR2 Here's the story; One day I was f*cking around with my BIOS settings, and I restarted. The f*cking video didn't work. I thought I messed something up in video settings. So we send it back to the local computer shop where we got it built. They found it that a capacitor blew, and lucky enough the whole computer was under warranty still, along with the 9800 pro (Saphire 1 year warranty). So we got the computer back. The display strugulled with having 1280x1024x16 on the desktop. So in the end, for $60AU we bought a fx5200 from my dad's friend (He just got a 9800XT). So I had to wait 4 weeks for the 9800 pro to come back, as it was xmas holidays and my computer shop shut down for the holidays.
Devyl
Well, my VERY first pc was a commodore 64.... but let's jump forward a bit... About 2 1/2 years ago, I had been out of the PC scene forever and a day. Even though it was in my blood, I had just been doing other things, mainly LIFE. Then I got the urge to build a PC again (at the time I had no computer as I sold my previous one... strange huh?). So it all started out with this: Mobo: MSI Socket A CPU: AMD Athlon 2400+ Memory: 512 megs of cheap DDR-333 Video card: GeForce 5200 Ultra Hard Drive: 80 gig IDE-100 Monitor: E-Machines 15" CRT Then I got power hungry... REALLY power hungry. Here's the list: MoBo: MSI socket A ---> Chaintech VNF3-250 Socket 754---> Asus A8V Deluxe Socket 939 ---> Asus A8N SLI deluxe CPU: Athlon 2400+ ---> Athlon 64 3000+ ----> Athlon FX-53 ---> Athlon FX-55 Memory: Crap -----------> Better Crap ---------> PQI Turbo Platinum 1 gig 2x512 @ 2-2-2-5 Video Card: 5200 Ultra ---> Nvidia 6800 8xAGP -----> Dual 6800 Ultras, SLI'd Hard Drive: 80 gig hitachi ---> 500 gigs total Hitachi ---> Quad 250 gig Hitachi's (first terrabyte!) Monitor (embarrasing) 15" CRT ---------------------------------------------> Hyundai L90D+ 8ms response rate 19" LCD So that was then... And now, here's my current rig (current upgrade from last setup there): MoBo: eVGA K8-NF41 CPU: Amd Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Memory: 2 gigs PQI Turbo Platinum Video Card: 2x eVGA Nvidia 7800GTX's @ 509/1.3 Hard Drives: 4x Hitachi Deskstar 500 gig SATA II drives (2 terrabytes! w00t!) Monitor: Hyundai L90D+ flatpanel @ 19" (considering getting another one)
