stone cold steve austin
For such a small disc that can hold 1.8gigs I think it is Dual layered already but what if they make it Tri or even Quad Layered and then they could fit San Andreas, Vice City and Liberty City all in one UMD that would be cool. First of all WTF seriously think things over before you post them please, second if I remember right its actually just a mini dvd instead of mini cd, don't think its dual layered because that would mean a better laser that is more powerful and use up more battery. PresidentKiller
if I remember right its actually just a mini dvd instead of mini cd It's not a mini DVD either. It might be similar, but it's not the same. I do think Sony should make a dual-layer (or "high density") UMD to allow better games to be released in the near future and increase the value (read: not the price) of the PSP. dragonwagon93
I agree if they did make a UMD that held more without increasing the price it would make the decision to buy the PSP easier, right now I just can't justify buying one for just LCS. Please don't kill ME I just have alot of things to worry about buying and I need a good reason to spend that much.
Fletchnuts
You can't just "make the psp read multiple layers", that would require a whole new laser, and would result in two different hardware specs for the psp. Once sony started releasing dual layer games, all those who have a regular psp wouldn't be able to play them. That kind of thing doesn't happen with consoles, it doesn't make marketing sense. The only way we're going to get bigger games is by decreasing texture/video/audio quality and by finding better ways of compressing data or using multiple umd's. The fact of the matter is that dual layer umd's are not going to happen in this current generation's psp lifetime.
K^2
I did hear something about UMD allready being dual-layered, but I've never seen that info on any official or trustworthy site. I'll probably have to take a look now and see if I can find some info. As for adding layers, I tend to agree with Fletchnuts. It does depend on the hardware, but most systems are built to support a set number of layers, and if PSP is built to support 2, you would have to replace the entire UMD drive to get it to read more layers. Edit: It just occured to me that at least in theory, PSP can use an external DVD drive. So you could get it to run SA sized games through that with an appropriate firmware upgrade, but I seriously doubt that Sony would release such an update. Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.
Spiralvortex
It is dual-layered, if it were single layered itd be 900mb. http://www.ecma-international.org/publicat...ds/Ecma-365.htm
